《One Moment, One Breath》Chapter Eleven

Aleesia was walking from her fifth period to her sixth period art class while listening to some rather loud rock music when she felt someone step up beside her. She glanced over and saw a grinning Jake so she pulled her headphones out and switched the music off.

"What's up wolf boy?" She asked, nudging him playfully.

"Not much, " He shrugged, "Was just letting you know the others left early for the day so I'll be your ride home. Me and Nessie will be outside waiting for you."

She frowned, wondering why they had left early again and nodded, "Sounds good. I'd rather not walk in the snow."

"Not like you'd feel it anyhow but yeah, I get it." He grinned, "See you later!" He gave her a small wave and walked away.

She liked Jake and Nessie just fine. They were super cute together and were always especially nice to her because they related to her most out of the whole family with Jake being a wolf and Renesmee being a hybrid like her. It was still a little frustrating though that no one was telling her what was going on. Several times now she had walked in on the family talking and the second she was in the room they got quiet before suddenly changing the topic. She knew that's what they were doing because she felt awkward every time it happened before Jasper would soothe the feeling away with his gift.

She hadn't asked anyone yet what it was because she wanted the family to trust her enough to talk to her as well. She wanted her mates to trust her with whatever it was that was bugging them. She knew it was important whatever it was.

Lately these days she was often with either Jasper or Alice, but rarely with both of them and sometimes with neither. On days that neither of them were with her, Jake and Nessie usually were. It was like they didn't want to leave her alone or something and it was getting on her nerves.

She was walking to her locker after the final bell of the day ran when she heard someone mutter "Whore." And she turned to see Pria's retreating figure heading for the exit.

"What the matter, Princess? I don't really think green is your color." Aleesia called, smirking when Pria turned around and glared at her.

"I just think it's completely disgusting that you're not only with Jasper Hale but also Alice Cullen. One wasn't enough for you? What are you sucking off the other Cullens too? Plus you're a girl. It's gross." She sneered, "I really don't see what they see in you."

Aleesia shrugged and said, "It's really none of your business. Your appalling homophobic views alone would be enough for them to turn you away. Your dumpster fire of a personality just adds to the mix."

"At least I didn't open my legs for the first person to show me a little attention." She shot back, her face turning a splotchy red color.

Aleesia laughed and turned, walking away while calling over her shoulder, "No, you opened your legs for everyone else!"

Aleesia snickered as she heard the girl screech and stomp away. She finished grabbing the textbooks she would need from her locker, then went to meet Jake and Nessie at Jake's truck. They were already inside, listening to some kind of classical-rock mixture when she arrived. She didn't waste time and just hopped into the back seat, popping her headphones in to give the two lovebirds some privacy.

When they got to her house they all jumped out and she unlocked the front door, letting them all inside before shutting it and locking it. She tossed her keys down on the kitchen counter and pulled out a couple of waters for them to drink which they took gratefully.

"I'm gonna wolf out for a bit and burn some energy. I'll be back in a bit." Jake says, then kisses Nessie's check before heading out the back door toward the woods.

Aleesia let out a sigh and headed up stairs to her room with Renesmee following close behind her. This had been their usual routine. Go to school, come home, study and do homework on her bed while listening to music and have dinner before going home with Jake when he got back.

"What do you want to listen to today?" Aleesia asks, plopping herself down on the bed while pulling the headphone jack out so they could both hear the music.

"Prince of Egypt soundtrack?" Renesmee says as she does the same, sitting cross legged on the bed and pulling out her own work.

"Sounds good to me. I love the vocals." Aleesia agrees, selecting that particular playlist.

They both get to work on their individual assignments, talking quietly about childhood memories. Aleesia found herself cackling as Nessie told her about the time she gave Jake a particularly ferocious wedgie for drawing on her face with a permanent marker. Edward had been very proud that day and the whole family got a laugh out of it as Jake walked funny for a while after that.

It was a couple of hours later when she felt a little uneasy. She glanced up from her math homework and looked around but nothing seemed to be out of place. Still, her instincts were screaming at her and the hair on the back of her neck stood on end. Aleesia waved her hand at Nessie to get her attention and when the girl looked up she pressed a finger to her lips telling her to be quiet.

Aleesia released her senses, pushing them out so she could listen and see better. The air grew thick with tension as she heard the smallest sound, a quiet snick as her backdoor was opened. Someone was entering her home and they did not want her to know they were there. She knew it wasn't Jake because he made no effort at being quiet, ever. The boy was a walking sound machine.

Aleesia pointed at Nessie and then to the bed, telling her to stay put as she stood up and padded her way to the open door of her bedroom to look down the hall. There was a light creak as the person moved across the floor from the living room to the kitchen but there were no other sounds. Not breathing. Not a heart beating. Whoever it was, was a vampire.

Aleesia steeled herself and crept down the stairs and turned, coming face to face with a tall man who stood well over her height with messy looking dark hair and blood red eyes. He was turning one of her glasses over in his hand and smiled creepily the second she entered the room.

"Who are you and what are you doing in my house?" She demanded, not liking the uninvited intruder in what she considered to be her safe space.

"Just popping in for a visit. You know, seeing how you are doing since you left the pack of mutts I left you with." He said simply, setting the glass down onto the counter and meeting her eyes.

How did this vampire know about the pack, and how did he know she had left? The wheels started turning in her head as she examined the man, noting his features, committing them to memory.

He smiled when she sucked in a sharp breath, realization dawning on her and she growled, "Get the fuck out of my house you murdering Psycopath!"

"Now is that anyway to talk to your father, dearest Aleesia?" He sneered, his expression growing dark, "I suppose if that's how it's going to be." His voice trailed off and a second later she was being slammed into the wall with his hand gripping tightly around her throat, probably bruising it.

"I came here to offer you a chance to join me but instead I found you shacked up with another coven and some mangy mutt!" He sneered then turned his head slightly and looked toward the stairs, his disgusting smile widening, "What's this? Another hybrid?"

A flash of panic flew through Aleesia as she remembered Nessie was up stairs and this piece of shit could hear her heart beating. He released her neck and turned like he was going to run for the stairs but she grabbed the collar of his shirt and used all of her force to throw him across the house to the opposite wall.

She heard movement upstairs but didn't take her eyes off of the vampire and she yelled upstairs, "Nessie don't come down! Call your dad or Jake!"

Aleesia tried to keep her voice steady and not show the fear that was gripping her insides as she stared down the vampire that had sired her. He stood up and brushed a piece of the wall off of his shoulder before letting out a sigh.

"I guess I'll have to make this quick then. I really was hoping you'd have a change of heart but I can always make more bastards. Maybe I'll take the other hybrid as a pet and see if she's breedable." He sneered before charging her again.

Aleesia felt sick at his words but quickly whipped around and slammed her foot into his gut as he tried to grab her. It nearly worked but his hand reached out and grabbed a fist full of her long hair. He ripped hard, sending her to the ground hard and a pain filled shriek left her lips. That shit hurts! She rolled out of the way in time to avoid his foot as he brought it down, trying to crush her, and jumped back up to her feet.

He moved and she did her best to doge the attack but did not move quick enough and his fist slammed into her side. She felt more than one of her ribs break and she grunted as the pain sucked the air from her lungs. She spinned and slammed her fist into his face, knocking him back only slightly as she felt another bone in her hand shatter from smashing into the stone face. If he had been human, the force she had used would have killed him but he was an immortal and she was going to lose this fight. If she was going to go down, it would be kicking and screaming and she'd do her best to at least delay him to give Renesmee a chance to run.

The vampire shot forward and sunk his teeth into her neck before she gripped his hair and ripped him away, bringing her knee up and ramming it into his gut. She backed away slightly, again positioning her body in front of the stairs. She was a little dizzy as she forced her body to breathe through the pain. She could feel blood pouring down her neck, soaking her shirt. She needed to do something fast before she passed out from blood loss.

"You're not going near her, you disgusting piece of shit. I won't let you touch her!" She hissed, wrapping an arm around her side as her ribs screamed in pain.

"I don't really see how you're going to stop me!" He laughed then ran at her, wrapping his corpse cold fingers around her throat tight enough to cut off her airway and slamming her down into the floor. She didn't need to breathe much to live but having her airway completely cut off was bad. His grip tightened and she choked, her vision blurring and growing dark. Then the vampire's head whipped toward the door and he hissed and disappeared, leaving a broken Aleesia laying on the floor.

Jake burst through the back door in his wolf form, eyes instantly locking onto Aleesia on the floor. She saw his form ripple, changing back to a human. He ran forward to try to help her but she gasped and pointed toward the stairs.

"Ness-Get Nessie!" She hissed, wanting to make sure the other hybrid girl was okay after her fathers threats to take her.

Jake didn't hesitate as he darted up the stairs and a moment later returned with a balling, frightened looking Renesmee.

Renesmee looked down at her friend, laying on the floor clutching her ribs with one hand and her throat with the other to try to slow the bleeding. Her face was paler than usual, her normal skin tone turning a concerning sickly shade.

Her face was screwed up in pain but still the girl looked up at Renesmee and asked, sounding a little strangled, "Are you alright?"

"Oh God, Aleesia! Hang on! I called dad! They will be here soon!" Renesmee rushed out, kneeling by her friend before looking at Jake and pointing to the kitchen, "Get me a washcloth, we have to try to stop the bleeding!"

Aleesia groaned, her stomach turning as the room started to spin. She felt someone pry her hand off of her neck and press harder against it but she couldn't tell if it was Nessie or Jake. She blinked, trying to force her heavy lids to stay open.

"Why didn't you let me help you?" Nessie cried somewhere at her side and she turned her head slightly, trying to smile reassuringly at her.

"Couldn't...let him...hurt you." She forced out before gasping and groaning again. Breathing was becoming very painful so she forced herself to take shallow small breaths.

Aleesia's ribs were in agony, her hand throbbed and her head was spinning from a combination of blood loss and pain. She was sure at least two of her ribs and her hand were broken. Her whole body was more than likely littered with bruises but it would all heal so long as she didn't bleed to death first. Her healing was kicking in but she didn't know if it would be enough for the deep wound on her neck.

The front door broke open just as her world spun and she lost her fight to stay awake, grateful that she at least wasn't feeling the pain anymore.
