《One Moment, One Breath》Chapter One

Alice danced around the closet she shared with her mate, putting away the clothes from her most recent shopping trip. She had already given the clothes to Bella and Renesmee that she had gotten for them and ignored their protests. Bella was starting to get a little better as the years progressed but she still had an aversion to shopping and new clothes that infuriated the dainty vampire. Everyone in the family had learned over time to just let Alice be Alice.
She was reaching up to slide a box of shoes onto the top shelf when her vision clouded and shifted, the future playing in her mind like a movie on a screen.
A blurred figure spins happily in a field before running over and grasping Jasper's hands, pulling him in for a delicate kiss. Alice sat nearby smiling lovingly at the two of them, enjoying the rare sunshine that was peeking through the ever present clouds as the wind whipped by, ruffling the tall grass.
"Alice, come here!" The girl's voice called, "Dance with me!"
The vision changed then.
They were running through the forest, dodging through the trees as a carefree laugh sounded through the dewy air. Jasper raced ahead, a blissful smile on his face as a hand gripped Alice's and she looked over, seeing the same blurred figure from before. They leaned in a pecked Alice's cheek before releasing her hand and taking off ahead, causing Alice to laugh happily and chase after them.
Alice gasped, dropping the box of shoes which clattered to the ground and reached to touch her cheek where she could still feel the warm lips that had pressed against her cold skin.
"Oh my." She mumbled before a huge smile broke out across her face and she squealed, shooting out of the closet and abandoning the clothes scattered everywhere to go find her mate and tell him she she had seen.

Stares. She could feel the stares on her as she climbed out of her beat up Kia Sportage and slung her backpack over her shoulder. What else could she expect? She was the new kid in a town with a population of less than four thousand. Still, the eyes that followed her every move made her eye twitch in irritation.
Lakeford Alaska was a tiny little town nestled between two large mountain ranges and a vast amount of wilderness. The large, wild landscape was one of the reasons she had chosen this place to move to. Well, that and the fact that it was as far as she could basically get from her previous life.
She ignored the stares and the irritation that was building up inside of her as she made her way toward the small wooden building with the sign that marked it as the front office of Lakeford High School. The eyes practically burning into her made her feel uneasy and she had to fight the urge to run back to her truck and just head back home but she didn't. Aleesia Lee Smith was not a coward. These nosy yahoos were not about to make her tuck tail and run.
The visit to the office was quick and the older lady behind the desk was nice enough to give her her locker number, schedule and map of the tiny school. She found her locker quick enough, depositing her heavy coat inside, leaving her just her hunter green, zip up hoodie for warmth, but it's not like she really needed even that. The cold never bothered her for one very specific reason. She was a hybrid, the only one she knew of in existence. Half shifter, half vampire is what she was told by the elders of her tribe, who raised her until she was deemed old enough to care for herself. The second she turned seventeen they kicked her out and told her not to come back. And that's how she found herself here.

Aleesia knew a lot about her wolf side. She was taught to control her anger from an early age and was given the information deemed appropriate for her. They told her about imprinting but also told her that because she had demon blood in her there was very little chance she would ever get to experience that aspect of being a wolf and she was okay with that. What happens, happens.
The problem was that the tribe she lived with had very limited knowledge of vampires so they were little to no help when it came to her more...vicious base instincts. It had taken time but eventually she learned to control herself and now her life was fairly normal. Well, as normal as it could be for a strange mutant girl who shouldn't exist.
Aleesia found her first class easy enough and the other students avoided her, probably listening to their own instinct that were screaming DANGER DANGER as she passed by. She made her way to the teachers desk and they signed off on her slip before sending her to the back of the room to one of the few empty desks. Class started and she did her best to pay attention to the AP English teacher who was discussing the next novel they would be assigned. It was boring at best and Aleesia found herself zoning out for the rest of class. At the end of class she felt someone come up to her desk and she glanced up, seeing a girl with shoulder length, straight blonde hair and bright blue eyes looking at her with a smile.
"Hi! I'm Cam, I just wanted to welcome you and see if you wanted to sit with me and my friends at lunch today!" She offered, holding out a hand for Aleesia to shake.
Intrigued by the girl's gumption for approaching her, she shook her hand and replied, "I'm Aleesia Smith. Nice to meet you."
Most people avoided her because their human instincts told them there was something dangerous about her but this girl had approached her without an ounce of fear and that made Aleesia smile to herself.
"So will you sit with us?" Cam asked again and Aleesia nodded, "Great, see you later!"
Aleesia quickly packed up her stuff and made her way to her next class, suddenly looking forward to her lunch period.
When the bell finally did ring, signaling the end of her class and the start of lunch, Aleesia found herself in the lunchroom. She quickly made her way to the line and bought herself a chocolate milk, pizza and an apple then turned and saw Cam waving at her from across the room so she made her way there.
There were three other people at the table, a couple of which looked a little familiar from her last two classes but she didn't know their names.
"Hey Aleesia!" Cam greeted her with her never ending smile.
"Hey, Cam." She replied, taking a seat next to her.
There was a brief awkward silence before Cam started introducing everyone. A scrawny boy with short dishwater blonde hair who was named David, A taller buffer guy with a buzz cut named Arny, short for Arnold apparently a Tall, athletically built girl with dull brown hair and a permanent scowl named Pria.

The boys were nice enough she guessed, David asking her lots of questions about where she was from and Arny sitting quietly, listening in to the conversation but the girl, Pria, was a mega bitch. She kept making snide remarks here and there and it was starting to grate on Aleesia's nerves. Aleesia could instantly tell there was going to be a problem with this girl.
A few minutes into lunch the door opened again, and cold air rushed into the room signaling that someone had entered the cafeteria and Aleesia found herself looking up as a large group of teenagers entered. Her breath got caught in her throat while looking at them.
"I see you've noticed our local celebrity family. They were pretty big news when they moved here a year ago too. I wouldn't bother though, they don't talk to anyone." I heard Cam explaining, her voice finally sounding a little irritated rather than the happy go lucky tone she had been using.
"Who are they?" I asked, as my eyes scanned them.
"The blonde bombshell is Rosalie Hale and The big guy that's basically smothering her is Emmet Cullen. They are a thing." Cam spoke and as she did I noticed the big guy smirk a little and place a kiss on the blonde's head as they passed.
"The guy with the messy reddish hair is Edward Cullen and The girls he's with are his sister and girlfriend I guess, Renesmee Cullen and Isabella but she has made it very clear to only call her Bella. She's nice I guess." Cam explained as they joined the other two who had already taken a seat at the other end of the lunch room.
My eyes flicked back and I froze as two more people entered. The room tilted a little and my vision blurred slightly as I looked into two pairs of golden orbs. They looked away, as I felt my world disconnecting and realigning and I found myself gripping the table a little too hard to steady Myself. I sucked in a breath while my brain raced, trying to figure out what just happened.
"The short girl with the dark pixie cut is Alice Cullen. I think she drinks way too much coffee or something. And the one with the curly blonde hair who looks uncomfortable is Jasper Hale. Again, don't waste your time. They are all together. Even Renesmee, who is a freshman, has a boyfriend. Doesn't look like he's here today though." She said, her eyes scanning the cafeteria before explaining, "He is beautiful though. His name is Jacob Black. Apparently the Cullen's took him in when something happened to his family. Don't know much more than that. Actually technically they are all either adopted or fostered by Dr. Cullen and his wife."
"That's....noble." Aleesia muttered, trying to restart her brain from whatever the fuck caused it to short circuit.
"It's fucking weird, that's what it is. They all live together and they are TOGETHER together. I don't even think it's legal let alone morally okay." Pria commented, her face drawn up in a sneer.
Aleesia swallowed a growl, not liking what she said or the way she said it and fought the urge to snap at her. Whatever this fucking feeling was, it was confusing the shit out of her..
"I mean, it's basically fucking your sister..." She kept going.
"They aren't actually fucking related you prissy bitch!" Aleesia snapped, "and I doubt you know them. Maybe get to know someone before you judge them." She hissed before grabbing her bag and leaving the table.
Several sets of gold eyes watched as the strange, dark haired girl stormed away from the table and tossed her untouched lunch into the trash, curious about the girl's odd reaction to the other girls gossiping.
Aleesia could feel eyes burning into the back of her head as she left the cafeteria but chose to ignore it and made her way to her locker while realizing that she had probably just lost her one chance at an actual friend. Cam was a rare soul, being brave enough to approach her, but she had just snapped at her friend so that was probably out the window. Aleesia felt a little bummed but honestly couldn't find it in herself to truly care. She was used to being alone.
She made her way to her next class which happened to be one of her favorites, AP history, and sat herself in an empty desk at the back of the room. The bell would ring soon anyhow so she didn't see any harm in waiting in the empty classroom.
Aleesia's mind drifted back to what had happened in the cafeteria when she had looked into the golden eyes of the two exceptionally beautiful people who had entered last. It had felt like a string snapping into place, drawing her closer to them, making her want to defend them from the shit Pria was spewing from her dumpster mouth. Aleesia found herself growling. That bitch had another thing coming if she thought she could get away with that shit around her.
Then it clicked. The reason for these unfamiliar and unexpected feelings. The reason her world now seemed to gravitate to the inhumanly beautiful couple.
One final thought crossed her mind as the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch.
Shit, I've imprinted.

"Ms. Peterson, did you attend a club Friday night? " Mr. Shaw said causally as he focused his eyes on his twirling pen."No" I said trying not to show that I was lying.
