《The 48 Laws of Power in Practice》Law 17: Keep others in suspended terror - cultivate an air of unpredictability.

People look for predictable behavior, which gives them a sense of control. If you are deliberately unpredictable, it will keep people off-balance and they will wear themselves out trying to figure you out.
This is more of a tool for the master to maintain power. In The Devil Wears Prada, Meryl Streep's character is the head of a fashion magazine who strikes fear into the hearts of all who work there. Her excessive demands and cutting remarks keep everyone in suspended terror. And in return, she has power and control over those around her.
Alternatively, when you are on the rise to power, it's usually wiser to make your superiors more comfortable by being predictable. But as an underdog, however, you can make being unpredictable work for you. For example in Ted Lasso, the main character is relentlessly positive and unexpected in the way he treats people. Eventually as a result, he's able to win hearts and minds.
So I work in fashion and have encountered several unpredictable personalities. But one woman stands out as mastering this law.
She was nice...until she wasn't. Most of our interactions had to do with me getting her sign-off on something. So I spent hours preparing for each encounter, getting all the answers to potential questions. You never knew if you'd be received with good humor or extreme annoyance. Or whether the answer would enable you to do your job, or cause you to spin around in circles.
But, she had everyone wrapped around her finger. For people into fashion, her clothes were aspirational; high-end outfits that were effortlessly chic. I noticed that people would emulate her style. Her assistant even got the very same haircut one day. When she would tactfully cut someone down in a meeting, people were so caught off guard, I never once heard a good rebuttal. She had an equal title as my male boss, but somehow the power dynamic seemed very much tipped in her favor.

I could only stand back and admire her power. Being unpredictable has to be part of the whole package, but played right, this law enhances power.

The Loyal Ones [Dark Biopunk Fantasy]
TLDR; A slave monster survives horror, war and servitude, while trying to live with himself. Thralls are a race of monstrous slave soldiers, in a universe where biological magic takes the place of technology. Centuries ago, their ancestors were desperate humans, who volunteered to be transformed for the Poison War. Today their unfortunate descendants are still soldiers and laborers. In contract law they are 'corporate wards'; slaves owned largely by arms dealers. Dally Harper starts this story as a champion cage fighter. He is one of the 'lucky' ones. It's all downhill from there. Content Warning: Explicit violence and gore, slavery, implied sexual assault. None of these are framed as positive or glorified, however they do have a strong impact on the plot and main characters.

Domain of Man
Isolation is terrible. To feel isolated with your fellow man around you is worse. What if you were dumped in some backwards cave somewhere, completely nude, maybe with your family, or even completely alone? The age of pioneers, heroes, generals, and geniuses is long gone. Humankind has become numb to the world around it because of how paltry everything else is compared to the glory of its history, the sheer volume of their accomplishments, and the sum of its innovations. You can interact with people across the world, travel miles in mere hours, and never prepare your own food or shelter, and it's all accessible to even the normalest of individuals. Artificial intelligence is within arms reach in devices and computers and even houses, and neural interfaces aren't exclusive to the rich and powerful at this point. Someone far in the distance took notice of Earth, saw the multitude of hairless apes swarming its surface. That one went down the checklist to see if humanity had, in fact, beaten the 'game' of Life. Sure enough, they had gone above and beyond the requirements, but nobody had been watching. 'Why might that be?', that one wondered. Protocol was protocol, though, no matter how strange the situation was. They pulled the lever, they flipped the switch. It's time for New Game +. ???
