《Holden Steele's Ruin [Completed]》Chapter 14

I had been uncharacteristically jumpy since the weird incident yesterday, my shoulders were stiff with paranoia as my eyes snapped towards even the smallest noises, it was infuriating but I couldn't make it stop. Avery had commented about it almost four times now, considering I had practically almost had a heart attack when she burst through the door.

My fingers were practically vibrating yesterday as I stumbled over my keyboard to call my mother. I could barely compose my voice, solely focusing on knowing if she was in any danger, the threat clouding my judgment. I know she sensed something was off but I never gave her the chance to question me, making up an excuse before hanging up. It could all be in my head so there was no need to worry her, I'd put her through enough as it is.

Outside my mental breakdown everyone was bustling in excitement, completely disregarding my aloft mood. It had been absolute torture for my thudding head, the chatter in the halls was no longer low whispers but loud babbling. The overly excited aura everyone was spotting was due to the football game later tonight.

The level at which the school practically worshiped football was outrageous, it was like they breathed it. From the ridiculously large red banner handing in the school's main hall, coupled with the flashes of red and gold littering the whole campus, I could already tell that they held the sport in at a higher pedal stone than the others.

I had witnessed outstanding shows of term spirit all through out the day as people pledged their loyalty to the school's football team and frankly it was getting quite sickening. My irritation from yesterday had not simmered in the slightest, so the loud show of support everyone was portraying only furthered it.

So here I stood outside my dorm room, debating whether to open the door or not. I knew past the barrier sat a very impatient Avery waiting to persuade me into coming to the game with her, we had been at this since this morning when she noticed my luck of enthusiasm. Suddenly the door burst open ripping me out of my thoughts and successful startling my fragile heart, small fingers curled around my wrist dragging me into the room roughly.

"You have to go to the game, how have you never been to a game!" She said this while flaring her arms around an incredulous look printed on her face. I had been to a game before, countless actually, she just assumed I hadn't and I didn't have any drive to correct her.

Blake completely idolised football, it was the only thing he was ever serious about and he was amazing at it even at a young age. Everyone knew he was destined for greatness and he was, even as a sophomore he had been elected as assistant captain. I had been to all his practices and games, it wasn't really a choice seeing as he drove me to and from school. Sports wasn't really my forte, so I had never really paid attention when he went on a rant about football; I wish I had though, then maybe I would have known a little about something he loved.

"Do you not want to go because of Holden?" This had me farrowing my eyebrows in confusion

What does He have to do with the football game?

"You don't know, do you?" Her eyes widened, shock swimming in her sea of blue "how could you not?! His the football player!" She said incredulously. I raked my brain for any chance I had missed a sign that he was a football player, he didn't particularly strick me as a typical jock with his brooding attitude and hooded eyes.

I immediately felt stupid when I thought of the fact that the room we had slept in was probably his and it was in the football house. Furthermore the next day he told me he was going to practice, why the hell hadn't I pieced things together? In my defence I was a nerves mess when we talked, what sport he played was the furthest thing in my head.

"He didn't strike me as a football player" I voiced my thoughts. He was not overly muscular like other footballers, his muscles were lean and trimmed but very prominent too.

"yeah but his really good at it, his actually one of the best quarterbacks in the state" she shrugged like it was nothing but I was still recovering from the earlier shock and now at the fact that he was a quarterback.

Avery was about to say something else probably ask me to the game again when a loud knock resonated in the room. She briefly cast me a look as of asking if I was expecting someone and I shook my head no, my heart exhilarating as I fought against pulling her away from the door. What would I tell her anyway, don't open the door because my worst nightmare could possibly come true? Yeah right.

Avery let out an exaggerated huff of annoyance before heading to open the door.

"Archer what are you doing here?" She said in surprise, my muscles immediately deflating at the sight of familiar blonde hair. Come to think of it I hadn't seen Archer in a while, probably since the party. I wonder if Holden told him what really happened at the party? Holden didn't strick me as a guy who would air out someone else's dirty linen in public, so I hope he didn't air out mine.

"Relax am not here for you, is Savannah here?" the mention of my name immediately had me straightening my back. I wondered about what Archer could possibly want from me as Avery opened the door wider, albeit rather hesitantly.

"What do you want from her? You better not be trying anything" she threw her brother a warning glare, folding her frail hands over her chest as he practically flew towards my bed. My heart hammered as I thought of what he could possibly want, the frantic face he was making doing nothing to ease my queasy heart.

"Um...I heard about the fight you and Holden had on Monday" Archer said this slowly as if afraid I would pounce on him at the mention of the fight.

"Holden has been in a horrible mood since then and I mean worse than he is usually in. His head has not been in the field the whole week and his messing up plays" he paused, a serious expression taking over his face as his eyes shone pleadingly "football is really important to him and his got some very important scouts coming out today, so please could you go over to him and harsh things out?" he had to be mistaking I couldn't possibly be the reason for Holden's foul mood, I mean we had only interacted a handful of times and furthermore he seamed like a person with a hard exterior.

"I don't think his losing focus over the argument, its probably something else" I mumbled picking at my cuticles.

"Yesterday when someone mentioned the argument he all but flipped on the guy, so trust me it is the reason his not in his element" the guilt came back ten fold, had I really upset him that much? "so will you please go talk with him, he really can't mess up, he needs this" even though I knew next to nothing about football I knew that opportunities only came by rarely. I sighed in defeat, my lungs compressing in fear at the prospect of approaching him.

"Okay I'll go talk to him"

"Great his in his room!" Archer said a relieved smile resting on his lips, he politely offered to drive me but I refused, I needed time to build up courage to approach the intimidating 6'3 football player, I just hope I remembered the way correctly. My trembling fingers struggled to tug on my shoes as I breathed deeply willing my ragging nerves to ease.

I was glad I had on comfortable clothes in which I could walk freely in without melting to a puddle due to the blistering sun. I had on some black leggings and a red old oversized t shirt, ironic how I was wearing the schools colour today, it wasn't planned I had just slipped on the first shirt I saw. The walk seemed shorter than I remembered and I was in front of the two story building sooner than I'd hoped.

The structure looked more prominent in the light of day and without the copious amount of solo cups littering the lawn it looked clean and welcoming. I climbed the few steps before knocking on the front door my hands shaking with nerves.

I waited outside the door, chewing at my nails as I rehearsed what I would say to him when the boor flew open revealing the same guy that had witnessed my embarrassing attempt at sneaking out of Holdens room. I held my breath praying that he didn't recognise me as I contemplated running away or not. To my utter humiliation his eyes ran over my hunched form, his features immediately shinning with recognition as amusement swam in his brown eyes.

"Your the chick that snuck out of Holdens room right?" I wanted to sink and let the earth swallow me whole. My cheeks flushed crimson as he gave me a knowing grin.

"Is he here?" I tried to avoid his question not wanting to supply him an answer. How much more embarrassing could this get?

He gave me a nod pointing up the stairs before giving me a wink, clearly insinuating that I had come for sex. I scurried towards the stairs wanting to forget that weird encounter completely. I knew which room was his because it was at the end of the hall further away from all the other doors, isolated like his dark aura.

I took a deep breath, trying and failing at calming my nerves before raising my knuckles to knock on his door.
