Xiao was sitting in his math class, listening to the teacher while scribbling down some quick notes. That was until he heard his phone suddenly ring. It was a call from Zhongli.

"Uh sir— I have a call," the male uttered while raising his hand.

The teacher nodded his head and gestured for Xiao to take the call outside of the room.

Xiao quickly got up from his seat and rushed outside of the classroom, then grabbed his phone from his pocket and answered the call.

"Hello?" He said, impatiently waiting for a reply.

Zhongli usually never called him during class hours, so it could only be something urgent.

"Hello, Xiao. I apologize for interrupting your studies so suddenly, but I need to tell you something important," the man finally replied from the other end.

Xiao took in a deep breath and closed his eyes. "Yeah?"

"It's about Qiqi."

"What about Qiqi?"

"I'm afraid her condition got worse."

"What do you mean?"

"I got a call from the hospital just awhile ago. The doctor said her condition suddenly worsened unexpectedly. And it appears the odds are against her."

"The odds are against her?"

"They said they'll find out shortly if she's going to be able to fully recover or not. If she manages to wake up from her coma soon, the chances of her recovery are higher. But if she isn't able to..." Zhongli halted.

"If she isn't able to?" Xiao asked while knowing full well what the answer would be.

He could hear Zhongli sigh from the other end before responding again.

"There's a high chance she won't live much longer. I apologize for informing you in such a way, but I thought you should be aware of this before visiting her again."

Xiao slowly took the phone away from his ear, as his eyes widened by the sudden news. He could hear Zhongli calling his name but he didn't answer. He couldn't answer.

At that moment, he felt his heart sink and a vast amount of despair overtook him. The male was simply devastated.

Xiao dropped onto his knees. "Huh? Qiqi might not— live? She'll die?" He mumbled quietly. "No... that can't be true. The nurse said she was getting better. She is getting better— right?"

He remained on his knees for the next few minutes, unable to comprehend what he was just told.

He simply couldn't believe it. The hope he had gained in the past couple of months was completely obolished within mere seconds.
