《Satin on the Slopes》Chapter 16

Rush decided that they liked my photography enough to let me continue on with their golden boys, but they had had enough of the park shoots. They wanted us to head out into more untouched territory and see what we could shoot. In all fairness, I was ready to learn more and the idea of a challenge excited me. Now that it wasn't all completely new little changes weren't scary.

"Do you have any training with avalanche safety?" Hudson asked while helping me load my gear onto the back of a snowmobile.

"Excuse me, what?" I sputtered. Up until this point in my career the most dangerous thing that I had to deal with was rogue pucks and those weren't terribly common. Avalanches on the other hand, those were deadly on a massive level.

"Avalanche training. Like, when snow breaking off of the mountain causing a compound effect of all this snow then becoming very dangerous," Hudson continued, speaking as if I were from the desert and had never seen snow.

"No, I haven't had training with that," I gasped, my eyes darting up the mountain in dread. Of course I knew what an avalanche was and I saw signs all over the highway, warning me about sliding rocks and potential avalanches. I just didn't think that they were that common and I certainly didn't think that I was going to be working in it. and now that I was considering the possibility these mountains didn't look so picturesque anymore. They looked like death traps. I placed my hand on the snowmobile to steady myself.

So much for little, nonthreatening changes.

"Hey, it's alright. I'll tell the guys that we need to shoot somewhere else. We'll do some backcountry to get those good shots, but we won't go anywhere uncontrolled," Hudson soothed. He moved like he was about to touch me, but then thought better of it. His eyes darted away from me, looking at his team. "Tyson, we need to find a new place to shoot."

"Why?" Tyson demanded. His words were targeted at Hudson but his eyes roved over me, seeming to be searching my new attire. "It looks like Penelope is finally ready for some real snowboard photography and you want to keep her down here in the park?"

"Avalanche risk is high with all the sudden snow that we got last night," Hudson explained.

"Since when are you scared of that?"

"I'm not," Hudson said, nodding his head towards me.

"Shame, I was looking forward to going farther up the mountain, heard that we might get to do some heli runs soon. Either way I think that we should split into pairs. I want you to watch me, to make sure I'm staying tight through everything and keeping good form."

"Of course. Jackson and I will go together and you can go with Graydon."

Tyson and Graydon were the first to go down the rough back country slopes after a brief skidoo ride. Hudson and Jackson stayed with me, both of them watching for small adjustments and mistakes while I was just hunting for the right angle. It was harder to work in the deep snow, but I had had a little bit of practice with Hudson so I wasn't doing too badly and listening to the guys talk about snowboarding I felt like I was slowly learning the lingo. Plus, being in the trees with fluffy powder and a beaming sun gave me tons of inspiration to create new images.

Soon enough the men swapped spots and I was left photographing Hudson and Jackson. While the pair had been kind to Tyson and Graydon it seemed that one of them had an inner coach.

"What the hell was that?" Tyson hollered while Jackson was midair.

It startled me so much that I jerked out of my crouched position and my hands fumbled, causing the flash to go off in my face. Tyson didn't care. When Hudson went he was yelling just as loudly. It took me a second to get used to it, but I found it almost comforting. Or it would've been if I wasn't so nervous about avalanches now. It reminded me of my hockey photography when I perched around the arena for practices and games with the coaches yelling at the top of their lungs. Oddly enough this was something that I knew quite well.

But Tyson's attention didn't stay on his friends for long.

"Little warmer in that get up?" he asked, coming up beside me.

"Yes," I answered, watching Hudson as he carved down the mountain, setting himself up for a small drop.

"That's good, but I do have to admit that I'm going to miss your normal clothes. I've never met a woman who could make jeans look so good."

"Thank you, but this is what I will be wearing from now on. It makes me much more productive and I'm grateful that Hudson had the good sense to buy it for me."

"Hudson bought this for you? When?" The shift in his voice made my skin prickle.

"A couple weeks ago," I muttered, readjusting my flash.

"When you two went to Fernie?" he grilled.

"Yes, now please let me focus. I want to get good pictures so I don't have to spend any more time in avalanche central than necessary."

"Fine, I'll let you get back to work for now, but how about we go out after? I know this exclusive place really close to Calgary. You can get all dolled up and..."

His voice droned on but all I could think of was my awful first date. The way that man's eyes had lit up when he talked about my ex fiancé was appalling. And it made it so clear that Connor had not finished meddling in my life, even if this hadn't been done by his hand directly. I had taken three days just to get over the date, I wasn't going to open that door again, not for a long time.

"I don't date clients," I spat, whirling around to face Tyson. He jerked back like he was startled by my sudden fury. Frankly, I was a little scared of myself at this point. "Stop flirting with me and let me do my damn job, Tyson."
