"I'm going to help Ms. Stanley," Gem said when she returns. Mom was about to yell at her, but, Mom hesitated as Gem spoke.

"How can she reach you?"

"We have walkie talkies. One for her, and the other for me."

Very clever, I thought.

"How long will you be over there," Mom asked. "Besides, school is coming for you two."

"As soon as she's back on her feet."

"Sweetie, many can survive from stroke. Others don't." Mom might want to change those words. The conversation is now a mother-and-daughter fight.

"But, Mom, she'll be better."

"Think about it. Say if she won't, then you'll be there for nothing."

"No! I'll go there because I care."

"But..."

"Do you want Ms. Stanley to be well?"

"Yes, but..."

"Then, she does have a chance."

"Yes, but, look at the facts, Gem."

"The only fact I see is that you're willing to bet on a person's life!" Gem angrily storms off. Mom sighed and went to bed. I just sit back and watch what is next in this life.
