《Story of Us》CHAPTER 5

I leaned back on my chair, laughing, as I listened to Jake narrate his day. He had an exam this morning and he woke up late. So, when he arrived at school, he rushed up to their classroom only to find out that another section occupied the classroom. It turned out that their exam was postponed and moved to after lunch. He hadn't had the time to check the messages on his phone. That was why he didn't know about the changes.

"I was standing at threshold, panting, and everyone was looking at me like I was some lost, crazy dude," he concluded.

"That is so embarrassing."

"Yeah. And I stood there for like a few more seconds because it didn't sink in to me right away."

I shook my head, still giggling as I imagined how he had looked like.

"So, how was the exam? Did you fail?"

"Hopefully not. No."

Suddenly, my phone rang inside my purse. I decided not to answer it, but Jake pointed out that my phone was ringing.

"Aren't you going to take that one?"

"Excuse me," I whispered as I pulled my phone out of my bag.

I stood up and took a few steps away from the table.

"Fio, is something wrong?" I asked.

"I haven't heard from you since your 'I'm already here' text. You're not answering my messages. What is happening? Are you in trouble? Oh, you don't sound like you're in trouble. Oh my God. Tell me everything," Fiona said in a hurry. I couldn't even say a word in between her sentences.

"This is one of the best dates I've been in."

I hadn't felt the urge to check my phone unlike in some of my past dates wherein the guy was boring or the date had gone awkward.

Tonight, it felt right.

"Okay. Get back to your table and tell me everything when you get home. I mean every single detail, Queen."

"Yas, Queen," I replied, chuckling. "Bye."

"Is everything alright?" Jake asked as soon as I was back in the table.

"Yeah," I assured him. "It was my roommate. She's just checking in on me."

"Do you have a curfew?"

I chuckled. "No..."

"You know what? Let's get out of here and go somewhere else."

We drove for about twenty minutes until we reached an amusement park. We had just entered but I could already hear the excited screams from the people trying out the rides, the victory sound from winning a huge stuffed toy in a dart game, and the laughter of friends hanging out.

"Hey, are you okay?" Jake asked, his eyebrows meeting in the middle.

"M-hmm."

"You're not fond of the rides, are you?" he asked, quickly realizing it.

I gave him a sheepish smile and shook my head.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I should've asked you first."

I felt guilty seeing how Jake's shoulders dropped. Maybe he had the night all-planned out so elaborately, and I just ruined everything.

"We can just hang out over there," I suggested and pointed at the lawn.

There were several people hanging out there too. I was assuming they were scared of the rides like me.

I might be fun, impulsive, and adventurous, but there were limitations. Scary rides in amusement parks weren't part of my adventurous side.

"Sure, we can do that," Jake agreed.

There was a queue at the cotton candy stand and I couldn't help but eye the fluffy and cute cotton candies. They were even in different shapes.

Jake nudged my shoulder, making me avert my eyes at him.

"You want some of those?" he asked.

"Actually..."

"Which one?"

"The piglet," I was quick to reply.

"Gotcha. You go wait for me over there," he instructed, pointing at the lawn.

I sat down on the ground and realized that the grass wasn't real. They were only the artificial ones. I looked back at the cotton candy stand and found Jake was already next in line.

This might be the best date I had been in, but I felt like things were happening too quickly. We had just met the previous day and we already had our first official date tonight. Shouldn't it have been a week later?

"Here you go," I heard Jake's voice.

He handed me a piglet-shaped cotton candy as he sat down beside me.

"Thanks," I answered, reaching for my candy.

I smoothened the skirt of my dress when I noticed a guy staring at my legs. I shifted my legs as I tried to make myself comfortable and also to make the guy stop looking.

"Oh, God," Jake mumbled. He took off his bomber jacket and placed it on my lap. "Sorry, I didn't think this through."

I noticed the guy turned his back on us immediately.

"You want to get out of here?" Jake asked. "Just tell me if you want to go."

"I think I already ruined your plan... I can manage this."

"No, don't say that. If anything, you actually made my night."

I smiled at him in response. This guy really knew the right words to say at the right time. I couldn't even tell if he meant it or if he was just trying to make me blush.

We went on talking about university and his friends. I told him more about Fiona and also about the lame guys I had went on dates before.

"I really hope I wouldn't be one of the lame guys," he commented.

"Trust me, you're not."

He smirked at me and looked deep into my eyes. It was one of those moments wherein you had no choice but to hold the person's gaze. I noticed his eyes flicker down to my lips for a split second.

"Hey, I think I want to go," I said and handed him his jacket.

He nodded and helped me up on my feet. I was surprised that there was no electricity when we held hands.

I already concluded that I like him. He seemed sweet and flirty at the same time. We got along pretty well, and we felt comfortable around each other. But there were no butterflies in my stomach.

When I went out on dates, I always had been able to categorize the guys. Great guy-great boyfriend and Lame guy-won't date him for when I was looking for a serious relationship.

When I decided to just have fun with guys, it was easier to categorize them. Great guy-great kisser but wants to have something serious. Great guy-still hung up on his ex. Nice guy-but boring. Lame guy. And of course, the douchebags who had thought I would be okay being a side chick.

And now, I couldn't quite tell which category Jake belonged to. Maybe I needed a new category. He seemed like he wanted something serious, but he was so good in flirting, I might be wrong about my assumption. He was a great kisser, a nice guy, and he never mentioned his ex-girlfriend tonight. He definitely wasn't boring.

He intertwined his fingers with mine and gave me a playful smile.

"This is nice," I murmured, smiling.

"It really is," he agreed then he pulled up my hand and planted a soft kiss on my knuckles.
