Four years have passed. The mayor has since amended the rules. Every child in the orphanage has a chance for new parents. Some of them are adopted immediately after the rules reformed.

Now 14 years old, Nadine lives peacefully in the Walkers' home. She bids goodbye to her old one. It is now a pile of shattered glass and rotten wood. She visits her parents' gravesites. Nadine even told them about how Shady Brook has changed and the Walkers have taken very good care of her.

"I forgive you," she said, facing her mom's tombstone.

O'Connor resigns from his job as the inspector. He adapted himself to his new job, a flower shop clerk. He made a truce with Leo and Nadine. Moreau secures O'Connor's old position as Inspector at the police station. "Are you sure I can't give you a different position at the station?"

"I'm sure, Moreau, I'm fine where I'm at now."

As for Leo, he gained friends from his school. He enjoys having Nadine for a sister. Whenever the other kids asked, "Will things would change if you and Nadine never met?"

"No, I will be the boy I was before she comes in." He intended on it to the fullest.

Nadine enjoys her new life with the Walkers. Even so, there would be days she thinks about her original parents. She figures they wanted her to be happy. All she knows is that she no longer feels broken.
