《The Broken House》Prologue: A Sad Memory

It's a cold night in Shady Brook. Leaves rustled in the wind. As the air grew colder, the houses, inside, became warmer. Everyone decided to stay in. All, except one.

On the corner of the street, the Clarks lived in a small house. There were only three residents: Mr. Clark, his wife, and their four-year-old daughter, Nadine. Mr. Clark was a caring man who's willing to support his family. No matter what, he goes to work as the postman. On this night, it all changes.

Mr. Clark decided to take a shift. Mrs. Clark did not want him to go. "It won't take long. I have to make one delivery, and I'll come home," he said. Mr. Clark grabbed his jacket and went out the door. Mrs. Clark became awfully worried.

When he returned, his cheeks were red. "Honey," his wife called. She felt his forehead. It was very warm. So, Mrs. Clark made him tea, and sent to bed. Mr. Clark became very ill.

"I want to see Papa," Nadine told her mom.

"I know, but I don't want to catch your father's flu." So, Nadine waited and prayed for her dad to get well. Unfortunately, he never did. So, it was now Nadine and her mom.

One night, Mrs. Clark said, "I'm going to find a job. When I do, I will come back for you."

"How long will you be gone?"

"I will probably be back in four days." As a result, Nadine was alone.

After four days has passed, Nadine tried to be brave. Her courage began to waver, however. The more Mrs. Clark stayed away, the more afraid Nadine was. Weeks passed, and she lost hope altogether. Nadine started to cry. "Mom, where are you?" she wailed.
