《The Boy with the Chestnut Brown Hair》CHAPTER 26

I heard a door opened and then closed after a few seconds. I pulled my blanket away from my right leg and felt the cool breeze from the AC. I opened my eyes in an instant as if someone had poured an ice-cold water on me. I blinked a few times, staring at the ceiling. Then I scanned the room—its beige walls, a white door on the right side of the room leading to the closet, and on the wall in front of the bed was a desk with a gaming PC on it.

I creased my forehead, feeling a little disoriented about where I was. My eyes flickered on the wall on my left where almost identical dark brown frames were hanging. One of the frames caught my attention.

It was one of Eastview Gazette's front page.

"Shit," I muttered under my breath, as my heart started pounding in my chest.

Shit, shit, shit.

I looked around, looking for any sign of my friends but no one was around. No bags were on the floor either.

What am I doing in Vino's room?

I turned off the AC and walked out of the room and proceeded to the bathroom. I stared at my reflection on the mirror above the sink as I tried to remember what happened last night.

I couldn't remember anything except that I left all of them and proceeded to our room—the guest room. Although I have a faint memory hearing Lily and Bianca's voices when they entered the room. I couldn't remember what they were talking about but Bianca was giggling.

I let out a gasp when I started wondering if Vino and I slept together.

"Ugh, don't be ridiculous. Vino won't take advantage of you. Besides, he has a girlfriend," I reminded myself.

I opened the faucet and started splashing water on my face as I try to suppress my embarrassment.

I headed down to the kitchen, unsure of what was waiting for me. I could only hope they were all there waiting for me so we could eat breakfast.

When I walked into the kitchen, I found Jeff and Brian sitting on a high stool by the kitchen counter, watching Vino who was standing in front of the stove.

They must have heard my footsteps because they all turned around simultaneously. Vino gave me a small nod before going back to whatever he was cooking.

"Where are the others?" I asked right away.

"Good morning to you too, Sleeping Beauty," Brian greeted and ran his fingers through his bed hair. "Vino was just telling us how great last night was. Did you sleep well, too?"

My eyes darted towards Vino but he wasn't turning to look at us. I had no idea what Brian was talking about.

Did something happen between Vino and me?

Jeff snorted, and finally let out a laugh.

"Bro," Brian complained.

Jeff raised his hands up in a form of apology.

"I'm sorry, I couldn't help it."

"Anyway... Why did you sleep in Vino's room?" Brian asked, looking back at me with his playful grin.

I could already feel my cheeks burning, so I avoided his eyes and looked at the windows behind them instead.

Suddenly, I remembered Vino reminding me it was the third door. I remembered counting the doors and I walked into the third door.

Was that Vino's room?

I honestly couldn't remember anymore. I was knocked out the second my head hit the pillows.

"Where did you sleep then?" I asked, finally meeting Brian's gaze.

"We slept in the guest room," Jeff answered before picking up the large mug in front of him and sipping his black coffee.

"The room where you girls were supposed to sleep," Brian reminded. "We were shock to find you on Vino's bed."

Oh, so I did walk into Vino's room then.

"We didn't want to disturb you so they slept in the guest room," Vino explained, finally butting in the conversation.

I narrowed my eyes at him. "Where did you sleep?"

Vino exchanged glances with the boys and smirked. "I slept at the guest room."

That's a relief.

"Kane," Brian mumbled as he burst out laughing, and Jeff snickered beside him. "You thought you two slept in his room, didn't you?"

"No," I was quick to deny. "I was just curious."

"You were nervous," Jeff pointed out.

"I wasn't."

"Bro, I told you she would've freaked out if you played along with my plan. I knew it. She was thinking of it."

I narrowed my eyes at Vino and he shook his head, smiling, before turning his back on us. I turned to Brian and shoot daggers at him.

"I just wanted to see how you'd react," he offered as an explanation.

"Where are the others?" I asked again, trying to change the subject.

Vino turned around again and said, "Lily left early. She said she and Luke have some errands to run. Migs and Bianca left a while ago to grab some breakfast."

"Isn't this breakfast?"

"They have plans."

I sat next to Jeff and watched as Vino served the fried rice on a platter. He had already prepared bacon, eggs, and sausages. I had imagined all sorts of things but having breakfast in Vino's kitchen wasn't one of it.

He opened the fridge and took out a carton of fresh milk. He handed it to me along with a blue mug.

Brian and Jeff exchanged glances before looking at Vino with their furrowed eyebrows.

"She doesn't drink coffee in the morning," Vino answered their unspoken question. "And she likes drinking milk in a mug."

"How come you know that?" Brian asked.

"I remember."

My heart thumped rapidly and I could feel a familiar ache and sadness inside. I wanted to say something, but I couldn't think of the right words to say.

There was an awkward silence, and I could hear my heart beating in my ears.

"Okay..." Brian mumbled, breaking the silence. "Why don't we dig in? I'm famished."

"Yeah, let's eat," Vino agreed, and handed each of us a plate and cutleries.

As soon as we finished breakfast, we stood up to clear the plates but Vino stopped us and said he would take care of it.

"I think I'll get going," Brian announced after Vino piled the dishes on the sink.

"Me too," Jeff added.

"What? I think I'll go now, too. Can any of you give me a lift?" I asked, looking at Brian Jeff.

The two guys exchanged glances.

"I have date, Kane. And Jeff is meeting a client before lunch," Brian explained and flashed me a mischievous smile. "Vino cand drive you home. Right, bro?"

I crossed my arms in front of me and gave a disappointed face at Brian before turning around to look at Vino.

"Uh, yeah, sure," he replied, nodding at Brian. Then he looked at me and mumbled, "I'll just drive you home."
