《The Boy with the Chestnut Brown Hair》CHAPTER 1

Are you down for it?

I stared at the latest message flashing on my phone's lock screen as I plopped down on my bed. It was from my high school friend, Jeff. He had sent me two messages before that, which I still hadn't responded to.

I hadn't even opened it yet.

I just arrived home from school after a half-day of processing my enrollment papers for the upcoming semester. I still had three semesters left of university before I get my bachelor's degree. Meanwhile, everyone from my squad, except for Bryan and me, had already graduated or was graduating this month.

I unlocked my phone and tapped on Jeff's message. His first message immediately made me smile. Ever since I became an irregular student and my schedule had been crazy, my friends made it imperative to ask me if I was busy every time, they sent me a message.

Hi, Kane. You busy?

Elisa messaged me, suggesting a high school reunion and we had agreed that we need you in planning this. But I also told her that you are always busy. Lol. So, she asked me to ask you.

Are you down for it?

Wow. A high school reunion?

I had never thought of suggesting a reunion but it sounded like a brilliant idea. I would love to see my former classmates.

Sign me up! I'd love to be part of the planning committee.

After hitting the send button, I put down my phone and pulled out my university registration from my file case, and read my schedule for the upcoming semester.

I realized that I now have a decent time for lunch, and a vacant hour at ten every Monday and Wednesday.

Finally, a not-so-crazy schedule.

I put the registration form back in my file case and placed the latter on my desk as my phone pinged.

Great, thanks! We're hoping the others would like to have it too.

They probably do. How far are you guys into planning it? Do you have a target date already?

I lay down on my bed and clutched my phone in my chest as I waited for Jeff's response. I found myself grinning from ear to ear as I imagine myself planning for the reunion. I was sure it would be fun.

Elisa suggested December, so it can also be our Christmas party. What do you think?

What? December already?

It was already June, leaving us with only six months to prepare everything. Our other classmates were living outside the Philippines and I wasn't sure if they would be home in December.

I'm not sure that's a good idea... if we wanted to have it in December, shouldn't we have started planning it a few months ago?

Coming from my experience, it was difficult enough to set a get-together with my high school squad and there were only seven persons in it. Making plans was easy, but doing it was the difficult part. Sometimes we managed to make things happen but most of the time, someone was missing. More often than not, it was me who couldn't come. And that was the case when we were all still in university.

I could only imagine how difficult it would be to organize a reunion for our whole batch. Given that some of my former classmates were working or looking for jobs. Some were still enjoying the unemployed phase while the others were living overseas.

I think she hadn't thought it through yet. What do you suggest? I know you already have a lot of things in mind.

We needed to know who would like to attend. We needed to know if there would be a theme and what kind. From that, we could plan the other things we need especially the budget. I could go on with everything we needed to have done months ago if we wanted to make it happen in December.

I was sure we couldn't pull this off in December and I didn't want this to be one of our grand ideas and plans that we never get to fulfill. I chewed on my lower lip as I racked my brain for a better idea.

I sat up on my bed and glanced at the pink photo frame on my white wooden dresser. In it was a photo of me and Jeff with our high school squad during our prom in junior year. I walked over to the dresser and picked up the photo frame.

The photo was taken by the official photographer that night. Bianca, Vino, and I were at the center with our sashes draped across our chests. Vino's arms were around my and Bianca's shoulders but he was holding me closer to him. The rest of the squad was pointing at us and doing their best impression of surprise and admiration.

I chuckled softly. It was one of the best nights of my life with my favorite people. An idea suddenly popped into my mind and I quickly placed the frame back on the dresser and grabbed my phone from my bed.

March. I think nine months would be enough time for all preparations and everyone can prepare their schedules too.

Yeah, that makes more sense. THIS is exactly why I reached out to you. You always know what to do.

Lol. It's too early to flatter me. Thank me after nine months.

I'll keep that in mind. Lol. Hey, do you realize that it will also be like our fifth anniversary after our graduation?

I mentally counted the years since we graduated before replying to Jeff's message:

Haven't thought of that. But you're right. And I think that makes it even more special.

I'll tell Elisa about your suggestions and maybe we can get together and meet to talk about everything we need.

Uni starts in two weeks. So, I'm free anytime for the next two weeks.

Awesome! I'll see you soon.

I glanced back at thepink frame and stared at the boy holding me close to him.
