《Baby Daddy》39. Alive

I suddenly felt pain again.
But not an eternal suffering kind of pain, an alive kind of pain, which meant I had done it.
I had chosen the right door.
However, what Ash didn't tell me was that if I did choose the right door and came back alive, I would have no recollection at all of what happened at that King's Cross Station as it would be wiped from my memory.
My body was so weak but I managed to open my hands and tilt my head slightly to the side.
When I looked over, I could just about see the silhouette of a familiar looking blonde haired Slytherin.
He was sitting in a chair beside my hospital bed, his elbows were on his knees and his head was in his hands. His hands had cuts all over them and there was dried blood on his knuckles, and it made me wonder what happened.
My movement and heartbeat caused a few of the machines in the room to start beating again, and this noise made Draco immediately look up from his chair.
As he looked up I caught a glimpse of his beautiful, beautiful face. His eyes were red, puffy and wet with tears, and his cheeks were tear stained.
"L-Lilah?" he asked, his voice shaking.
I didn't have enough energy to talk so I just blinked in reply, hoping that was enough.
"Lilah!" he said again as he stood up from his chair and rushed to my side. I could tell when he first saw me, he thought he was hallucinating, but now he realised he wasn't.
A doctor came rushing into the room at the sound of the beeping machines and his eyes widened when he saw my alive body. He called down the hall for other doctors and eventually more came rushing in.
"Oh my gosh Lilah, I thought I lost you", Draco cried, fresh tears of happiness and relief now rolling down his cheeks.
I faintly smiled up at him before I slowly moved my head to scan my eyes around the room, looking for any sign of my son.
Draco could tell what I was looking for so said, "He's okay, the doctors said he's perfectly healthy, just a little small so they're looking after him."
Right after he said that he was ushered out of the room whilst the doctors did whatever they had to do. I was still so weak so I didn't really take notice to what they were doing but I was still awake most of the time, going in and out of consciousness.
I wasn't aware of how much time passed when the doctors finally left the room, leaving me to rest.
The door opened a few seconds later and in walked Draco with the biggest smile I've ever seen on his face.
"Hello my love", he said as he came and sat down next to me, and held onto my hand immediately.
"Hi", I whispered weakly, as my voice was still not very strong yet, and a gave him a faint smile, which was the best I could do.
"I love you so much", he said, and I could see tears starting to fill his eyes again.
I could hardly speak so I gave him a slight nod to show him I loved him too. I then tilted my head to the side, as if to ask him what happened and luckily he understood the message.
"Well, they haven't actually found out what really happened yet, all they know is that something went wrong and caused your body to fail on you. Thankfully though, before your heart... stopped," he hesitated, "they were able to perform an emergency c-section on you to save the baby. Because he is six weeks early, he is very weak, but luckily he's perfectly healthy and he'll just need to stay in the hospital for a few weeks until we will be able to look after him without the help of the doctors."

I smiled, happy that my son was alright, before he then continued, "I wasn't allowed in this room or to go with our son, so I was just waiting outside, with Longbottom actually, which wasn't too bad. It was absolutely horrible having to wait outside though because I didn't know what was going on in here and I had no idea what to do with myself."
He saw me look down at his bloodied hand, and realised that I wanted to know what happened, so he told me, "Uh- well, after they brought out our son and went to look after him, I asked how you were doing, and they said that they were trying their best. And in my head, that normally means that the person isn't doing well and they most likely weren't going to make it, so as soon as they said that I started freaking out. I didn't know how to feel because I thought I'd lost you, so I kind of started going crazy and punching the walls around me. Longbottom stopped me though before I could do any permanent damage to something or myself."
I still couldn't speak, so he just kept on telling me what happened as he knew I'd want to know. "And then a doctor came out of the room and told me- they told me that... well they said they were sorry and there was nothing they could do, and I immediately knew they meant that you hadn't made it", he took a deep breath as a few more tears started rolling down his cheeks at the horrible memories.
He paused for a minute as he wiped his tears and tried to steady his breathing before finishing the story. "And then they let me in to, you know... say goodbye", his voice cracked as he said this.
"As you know, I've not had the easiest life and I've been through a lot of shit over the years, but that was by far the hardest thing I've had to. I thought you were gone and there was no way of getting you back. I was just sitting in here next to you for I don't even know how long, thinking about the future we were supposed to have. I was thinking about Indie, and how she was going to grow up without a mother, and our son who would've never been able to even meet his mother. And then I thought about myself, I didn't know how I was going to live without because you've made me so much better and I was worried that I would end up going back to my old habits, and go down a path like my father, without you to keep my steady."
I could tell by his voice that it was too hard for him to continue talking about this without breaking down again, so he said, "You need your rest", and gave me a kiss on the forehead before making his way over to the door.
"No..." I said as loudly as I could, which was only a whisper, and thankfully he heard it as he turned around. He looked worried and quickly rushed over to my side as I think he assumed something was wrong.
"Are you alright?" he questioned, looking concerned, "What do you need?"
I slowly shuffled over in the bed as much as I could with the strength I had and patted the empty space beside me, signalling for him to come lay beside me.
He understood what I meant and asked, "Are you sure?"

I nodded my head slightly to show him it was alright, then he came to lie down next to me, being much more delicate than he usually would as he didn't want to hurt me. He faced me and tangled our legs together before wrapping his arms around me and pulling me against his chest. We then both fell asleep in each others arms, knowing that we were safe.
-----
I woke up to the sound of people in the room whispering. I opened my eyes and was immediately met with Draco's sleeping face, he looks so peaceful when he's asleep, I thought.
"Do you think we should wake them?" I heard an oddly familiar voice say from the other side of the room.
"I don't know, they look quite comfortable and I'm sure Lilah needs her sleep", another voice spoke, which I also recognised but I was too tired to work out who it was.
I felt as though I had a lot more energy this morning and could move more, so I lifted my head up slightly to peer over Draco and see who was there.
When I looked up, I saw Gray, Luna, Cho, Hermione, Blaise, Goyle and Theo all standing in the corner of the room. How on earth did they all manage to get out of school?! I wondered.
"And she wakes!" Gray shouted as soon as he saw my face.
His shout must've woken up Draco, as he started stirring and waking up from his sleep. He smiled when he saw me and pulled me in for a long kiss, not seeming to have realised that our friends were in the room.
"Woah, easy there tiger", Blaise laughed as our kiss grew a bit more passionate, causing Draco to jump back and fall off the small, one person bed.
"Oops, sorry", Blaise said, not sounding sorry at all.
"What are you guys doing here?" Draco asked as he stood up again, a little embarrassed that they just witnessed him falling off a bed onto the floor.
"We just had to come and check if Lilah was alright, you know, after what happened at the quidditch match yesterday", Cho said as she looked over to me and smiled.
"I'm okay guys, thanks", I said, happy that I was finally able to speak normally again. I wasn't sure whether to tell them what happened or not as I didn't want them to worry.
"I'm glad, you definitely look much better than you did yesterday. Draco on the other hand", Luna said as she turned to face Draco who was now sitting on the edge of my bed, "looks absolutely awful. He looks like he just got hit by the Knight Bus."
I looked back over to Draco, along with everyone else in the room, and only just realised how sick and tired he looked. His quidditch uniform along with his hair was an absolute mess, worse than it normally looks in the morning, his hands were still covered in dried blood, his eyes were red and his cheeks were still tear stained from crying yesterday.
"Yeah, what happened mate?" Theo asked. He looked a bit more amused than he did concerned as they still didn't know the severity of the situation.
"Uh-" he said as he turned to me, unsure if he should or shouldn't tell them what happened.
"I think it's probably best if we tell them", I said, to which Draco nodded.
"Tell us what? What happened?" Hermione questioned.
I had no idea how to tell them, so I just told them exactly how it was. "Well, I kind of died yesterday, but I'm alive now so it's alright."
None of them said anything, they just stood there with their eyes wide and their mouths gaped open.
"Y-you died?" Gray said, breaking the silence.
"Yeah, pretty much. At least that's what Draco told me, and I don't think that's something he would lie about", I said.
"And what about the baby?" Hermione asked, concerned, when she realised there wasn't a baby in the room.
"He's okay and healthy, the doctors are looking after him though as he's still too small and they need to keep an eye on him", Draco told them.
Suddenly, the door to the room opened and in walked the same doctor I saw yesterday.
"Ah, you have guests I see", he said. As he walked further into the room, I could see he was pulling something behind him. I looked closer and saw that it was a small bed, and inside was a baby. My baby.
Our son.
Everybody, apart from Draco and I, left the room so that we could spend time with our son, for the first time. Since he was still weak, we only had a short amount of time so that he could get back to urgent care, but it was still better than nothing.
"Do you want to hold him first?" Draco asked as we were both staring down at our son, not doing anything.
"No, you go first", I said. With Indie, he didn't get to experience any of the newborn stuff, so I knew how much this meant for him to hold his son first.
"Are you sure?" he asked.
"I'm sure", I said.
Draco slowly lowered his hands down into the bed and gently held onto his son as he picked him up and held him against his chest.
"He's perfect", was all he said as a few proud tears started to fall out of his eyes.
It brought back so many memories as he said those exact words to Indie when he first held her.
"He looks just like you", I said as I came to sit next to him and our son.
He really did look like a mini version of Draco, with his white blonde hair, and grey eyes.
"Was Indie this small?" he asked, as he continued to cradle his son as close to his chest as possible.
"No, definitely not. She was much bigger, probably because she was full term", I told him, as I wiped away a few of his tears that had escaped his eyes and were creeping down his cheek.
We sat there in comfortable silence for a few minutes, just admiring our son, before Draco spoke again.
"Do you want to hold him?" he said when he realised he'd been holding him for a while.
"Yes please", I said. I was hoping he'd ask, as I really wanted to hold my son. However, I didn't want to be the one to ask him as I didn't want to ruin this moment for him.
He delicately placed our son into my arms as I pulled him against my chest, getting him as close to me as I could.
"Have you thought of any names?" I asked him after we were silent for a couple of minutes.
We hadn't yet discussed names as we though we had at least a month to do that, so I was wondering if he had thought about it on his own.
"I haven't, I guess I've just been too busy to even think about", he admitted. "What about you?"
"Well, I was thinking we could do something meaningful, but only if it's okay with you", I began as he eagerly listened to my suggestion. "Okay, you obviously know how much Ashley meant to me, and how much I miss her. So, I was think about maybe Ashton for him, so we could name him after her."
"Ashton", Draco repeated as he stared down at our son, seeing if he like the name and if it fitted him.
"I like it", he said as he looked up at me and smiled.
"You do?" I asked, needing to know he was sure before we made it official.
"I do", he said, looking back down to Ashton.
"What about a middle name?" he asked.
"How about Draco?" I suggested. I knew it was a Malfoy family tradition for their first born son to inherit the fathers first name as his middle name, and I knew how much it would mean to him.
"Really, are you sure?" he grinned.
"Definitely", I said, and it made me happy seeing how excited he was about it.
The door opened and our friends walked in, eager to see our son.
"Everybody", Draco said once they were all in the room. "Meet Ashton Draco Malfoy."
