《Big Book of Fandom One Shots》Nothing Lasts Forever ~AU!Human!Espio x Fem!Reader~

{this is an old fanfic of mine that I rewrote into a reader insert! It's based on the old Minecraft adventure map, Crack in the World. Also the x reader in this isn't super obvious; so think of it either as subtle or just platonic~}
I look off at the sunset, it's glow shining brightly as it slowly dimmed out. The wind rustled my (H/C) locks as tears streamed down my face. I clenched the grass beneath me, almost pulling it out, to ignore the lump forming in my throat. This was the last day, the last day for all of us. I glanced over at the mine, which held bombs. No one has believed anything I've said of it, however. "Hey, it's getting late, you should head back to your house." I turn to see my purple haired friend and muster a half-hearted smile, "hey Espio. I was about to head back, just watching the sunset." I force my voice not to crack as I spoke. "Are...you okay? It looks like you've been crying." He knelt down next to me. "Oh, I-I'm fine, my eyes were just watering, probably from the lack of sleep." Lies. All lies. I haven't told my close friends about the bombs, they wouldn't believe me either. "Well, in that case, you should sleep. I'll walk you back to your house." He stood and extended a hand for me to grab, which I did and he pulled me up. Once we got to my house, he called out goodnight, which I replied with the same. I wanted to tell him of the bombs right then, but I couldn't bring the words out of my mouth. I watched as Espio faded into the distance. Soon, I won't see him anymore; I won't see anyone anymore. Sighing, I entered my home and slumped on my bed. It was nearly impossible to sleep. Eventually, my eyes gave in and closed; allowing me to rest.
Knocking echoed through the home as I squinted my eyes open, the daylight shining right in my face. I groaned, getting out of bed and heading to the door. On the other side was (F/N 1) and Charmy. "Hey (Y/N)! Wanna go play with us?" Charmy said smiling. "Sorry guys, but I want to walk around town for a little while...what about...later." I struggled to say the last part, there won't be a later. "Oh, okay. Well see ya! Come on (F/N 1)!" Charmy said as him and (F/N 1) leave. I head upstairs, get dressed, and head out to town. Stuffing my hands in my pockets, I look around at the buildings and happy faces. I see Charmy and (F/N 1) bugging Silver and laugh a little. I'll miss my friends. "Hey (Y/N)!" I turn to see Amy, "Hey."

"Have you seen Sonic anywhere?" She asked, I chuckled lightly and shook my head, "nope, I haven't."
"Oh...okay then!" She was about to skip off, but then she stopped and narrowed her eyes at me, her expression going from happy to confused and worried, "...are you okay?" A lump formed in my throat, but I forced back the tears and the words, "y-yea..."
"Well...okay... I'll catch you later!" She ran off. I can't imagine being without all of them. It might end up fruitless, but I need to tell someone, anyone! I head over to one of my friends houses and knock on the door; my friend answering soon after. "Hey (Y/N). What's up?" I look down and sigh, "I need to talk to you, are you busy?"
"No, not at the moment. Come on in," I nod and walk inside, (F/N 2) closing the door once I entered. I took a seat on the couch and the lump in my throat returned. "I-I don't think you'll believe me...but (insert random name)...planted bombs in the mine...they'll explode today." (F/N 2) sat there in shock. I knew (Friend 2's pronoun) wouldn't have believed me. "Have...you told anyone else?" I returned their shocked look, maybe they do believe me? I nod and let out a sigh, "I told the mayor, but he didn't do anything and said I must have imagined it," (F/N 2) got a firm look on (Friend 2's pronoun) face and walked to the door. "What are you doing?"
"Getting help. It...might not work...so go tell everyone else that you know will believe you," that's the thing, I don't think anyone else will. Not wanting to argue, I watched as (F/N 2) walked off towards (F/N 1) and Charmy. I stood by and watched as (F/N 1) and Charmy became shocked and (F/N 1) muttered something, waved bye to Charmy, and walked off with (F/N 2) toward the mayors house. Maybe... maybe this will work. With my newfound determination, I walked to the nearest house and knocked. "Yeah?" Jet answered the door. I sighed, here goes nothing, "Jet, I'm your friend right?"

"...I mean...I guess? Why?"
"I need to tell you something important."
I explained the situation to almost all of my friends and came upon the last house, Espio's. I knocked and he answered. "Hey (Y/N)..." He took one look at my expression and his smile dropped, "what's wrong?"
"That's what I need to tell you."
~Timeskip of explaining~ {I'll keep this in but ew, why did my younger self label timeskips?}
"Oh my god..." Espio shook his head. We walked out of his house and we saw (F/N 1) and (F/N 2) standing in front of (insert previous random name), who was gravely injured and bleeding out. I overheard their conversation. "It's over ! We destroyed your three bombs!" (F/N 1) glared at them. They coughed a few times before smirking. "Three bombs?" They coughed a bit more, closer to death. "There...were....four bombs..." they hunched over on the ground and died after saying their last words. (F/N 1) and (F/N 2) looked at each other worried and ran toward the mine. I looked at Espio and he had the same expression I did, worry. There is no way I'll just stand around here and do nothing! I ran off toward the mine with Espio following. We got there right as the ground began to rumble. "The bomb..." He muttered. I look at the mine. (F/N 1) and (F/N 2) were in there. I glared ahead of me, clenched my fists, and ran in. This isn't a mine, there's no way it can be. This is more like volcano. Lava was rising at a fast pace because of the explosion. "Espio! Go warn the people in town!" I hollered. I looked up to see (F/N 2) and (F/N 1) climbing up to the top of the 'mine'. My eyes narrow above me, I won't be able to climb because of the fast rising lava. I left the mine and the ground shook again, but this time, a loud crack sounded throughout the area. I look over towards (insert previous random name)'s factory; there was a crack in the Earth, and it was getting larger. I ran to town square, where I found Espio. "Have you told everyone?"
"Yes..." He glanced at the crack in the Earth that was getting larger, "I guess...there really was no stopping it,". He glanced back at me. "Yea...I guess so..." I look at the 'mine' to see (F/N 1) and (F/N 2) standing on top of it, lava slowly falling down the side. Tears ran down my cheeks. There's no avoiding it; this is the end. Another loud crack echoed louder than the first and I turn towards it, the crack was getting bigger. I let my knees fall weak and landed on the gravel walkway; not even caring that I was sobbing uncontrollably. If only I told someone sooner, maybe we could have stopped it! Another crack sounded out, even louder than the last.
Why didn't I say something sooner?
