《Into the fire》Chapter Seventy Six

Wandas POV

My head snaps back to her lying form, my heart beating at a road runners pace. Did I just hear that?

I look back to Steve who looks like he's seen a ghost.

"You heard that?"

He simply nods his head.

"Alex? Are you.. can you hear us? Can you talk?" I'm searching every inch of her for any indication that she's moving, that she's alive.

"I know.. I know you love me. Your little speech was .. quite something."

For a moment, I don't move. I don't want to break whatever spell is over this moment.

"Alex?" I manage to breathe out.

"Yeah, sunshine. I'm here," and.. she smiles.

Happy tears this time. And an immense hug I can't stop.

Then I remember; she is alive now, but I need her to stay alive.

"Dr. Cho! Steve, get Dr. Cho!"

This finally shakes him, making him turn to leave. But not before running into the door.

So I get to hear Alex's laugh, another assurance that she's alive

"What? What's happening? Wanda I told you-"

"Hey, Cho," Alex offers her a weak smile.

"How.. it's not possible."

"Well, I am here and alive and in some amount of pain."

"Shit- right. Wanda, you need to leave we have to- well, I'm not even sure what we have to do right now, but we have to do something."

I rush out of the room to be greeted by my team. Who are frozen. And staring at me. And all looking very confused.

Then they all talk at once.

"What's going on?"

"What just happened?"

"Why did Dr. Cho go back in there?"

"Are you okay?"

"Woah, woah. Just, let me breathe," I plop down on the seat closest to me, hands going to cover my face as I start to try and process what just happened.

"Alex is alive," Steve blurts out.

"What?!"

"How?"

"What happened?"

"Seriously?"

"Okay! Like I said, let's all just take a moment." I take a deep breath, but their eyes are burning into me. "Fine. I don't know, okay? I just.. I had an idea and I thought, 'why not?' And I don't know, I think it might have worked."

"I am so confused," I barely hear Peter mumble.

"Same," Clint agrees.

"Overall.. I honestly don't now. Can we just wait and see what Dr. Cho says, please?"

There's a general consensus of agreement as we all fall into silence, waiting to find out what the hell just happened.

—————

It's been hours, or what's felt like hours, since Helen went back in to save Alex. Or, is she saved? To help the wounds? Honestly I have no idea. I don't know what happened and I don't know what's currently happening.

And it's driving me up a wall.

I can't stop my leg from bouncing as fast as my heart as I fumble with the rings on my hands.. something I've picked up from Alex. She was always messing with her rings or mine and now I seemed to have picked up the habit.

Not that I mind.

I'm really too busy going through all the scenarios of what's going to happen after.

She is alive.

She's alive.

So they'll fix her wounds with helens fancy machine and heal all her other injuries; she'll be as good as new.

But.. what does it mean for us?

When she left a month ago.. that was it. Not a single word a message was sent from her to me. I tried. Every day I tried to get ahold of her to no avail.

But she's here now and she talked to me when she woke up and I felt her, whatever that's supposed to mean.

Will she take me back? Will we have a chance to figure out a future? Will she forgive me? Can we get past this? And if she does and we can, do I move into her place or would we start over?

Of course all of that will come after the inevitable interrogation Tony will want to conduct. Although I'll make sure she has time to properly rest and heal first.

Of course I will also make sure that I'm there through everything because I want to be and she's going to need someone on her side. I need her to know that I am. If she even wants me there.

And don't get me started on..

Nat cuts off my inner monologue, "hey, Wanda. She's going to be okay."

All I can do is look at her, cause really? I don't think we know anything for sure at this point.

"I know it's been.. hectic today. But you said she was alive and talking, right? So she just needs to be patched up."

"Or her waking up was some weird fluke or hallucination or-"

"Steve said he heard and saw her talk, too. You both weren't hallucinating. She's going to be fine."

"Ugh," I throw my head into my hands, "but even if she is, that doesn't mean that she wants me. Or wants me back. I was never really sure if we officially broke up or if we were just on a break."

"She wants you back, of course she does. You loved each other, there was no doubt about that."

"Yeah. But I didn't believe her. I accused her of working with hydra. I pushed her to do this."

"No, you didn't," Nat says firmly. "How about we let her tell us her story? We go from there."

"And what if.. what if-"

"Don't do that to yourself, Wanda. You're going to drive yourself crazy if you do. Just take things on as they come."

"You have really become wise since dating Spencer," I can't help but poke a little fun at her, but it's all with love.

"Only since I've dated Spencer? And what was I before that?"

"You were wise. But when it came to relationships.."

"Hey! I was waiting for the right person. And I've found her," she says her smile instantly setting off my own.

"I'm really happy for you, Nat. You deserve all the love," I tell her genuinely.

"Thank you. But you do, too. And you'll get it," she tells me without any doubt.

"We'll see," I mumble quietly.

I know she heard me as was going to make a comment, but that's when the lady of topic arrived.

"Hey, love!"

"Spencer!" Nat squeals, jumping up from her spot next to me and running to her girlfriend.

Oh, did you think I meant Alex? Yeah, I wish.

"Hey, Wanda," Spencer smiles at me as she goes for a hug. Which I guess I need more than I thought because I don't let go.

"Alright, I missed you too!" She chuckles.

"Sorry. It's just.. been a rough day," I admit.

She nods her head, "Nat told me. I'm really sorry, Wands. She'll pull through now, though. If Nat could look beyond all of my flaws, Alex will forgive you. You're love is too rare to let it go."

"You are too good," shit, thankfully she didn't hear me.

There was a time I pinned after Spencer, but I am very much over that and we're good friends. We also kind of knew each other in our hydra days.. but we don't talk about that.

Spencer and Nat take the seats next to me.

I turn my attention to Spencer, "Not that I don't love that you're here, but why are you here?"

She laughs again, "because I figured you could use some support. And I know Tony will be itching to ask Alex questions. I'm on your side and hers for whatever you need."

"Thank you, Spencer. You're a really great friend-"

"And incredible girlfriend," Nat cuts me off.

I press forward, "I honestly have no idea what's going to happen, so I'm glad you're here."

"Of course. Anything for my girls," then she kisses Nats forehead making her smile grow.

"So do we know anything yet?" Spencer asks.

"Nothing. We've all been sitting here for hours without a single word," Bucky speaks up.

"Yeah I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that Alex is alive. We saw the machines go off. Her heart monitor never started beeping again. Now she's alive?"

"Yes, Clint. Alex is alive," no, I did not come off too harsh.

"Hey, I wasn't trying to say it like that. I'm glad she's alive. It's just.. I don't know how.."

"I know. Me neither. But I'm not questioning it. I'm taking the miracle. As long as she's still alive," I look over to the door that's blocking me from Alex.

I know it's the room where they're saving her life, but I still don't like that I have no idea what's actually going on in there.

"She is, Wanda," Spencer assures me.

I know I keep going around with that; believing she's alive to doubting it. But my hope and the realistic side of me are clashing.

Like it was magic, the door opens and Helen walks out.

I don't hesitate to stand up and walk over to her. I can't read her expression as she looks over at all of us. But I'm impatient.

"So? How is she?"
