《Into the fire》Chapter Sixty Eight

Wandas POV

The too fast thump in my head was all I could hear or feel as I listened to Clint describe what happened.

It was out of nowhere. A burst of flames engulfed the building within seconds, like it had no other choice but to collapse by the hands of fire, its destiny decided with nothing we could do to change it.

Thankfully they had chosen to stay on the outside of the building, opting to go for a hidden, out of sight vantage point.

It paid off.

Not in the we- caught- the -bad -guy kind of way. More of a we're -still -alive kind of way.

Which is the only thing bringing me solace right now.

They didn't see anyone or anything. It was just silence and then a burning building, a deafening roar of fire encapsulating the building and eventually the forest surrounding it.

The next move was to see if anyone was surrounding the building.

It was too far out for any help to be had; whatever was in there is now burnt to a crisp. No one was found near it. That's why Clint told us what was happening; as they stood there watching this building get consumed by flames.

So they all gathered quickly to make sure they were okay, finding out quickly they hardly had any marks on them thanks to the location of their hiding places. Then deciding there wasn't much left for them to do, they loaded their jet to take off.

"Guys.. I don't know about this," Clint's voice comes over the comms once they're on the jet.

"What do you mean Clint?" Tony asks.

"I mean.. I don't get it. If this is hydra.. why wouldn't they try to fight us? Lure us into the building before setting it off? Or at least try to get a few shots at us? If this is Alex.. she didn't even show her face."

Huh. That's.. a great point.

"Okay.. but.. but maybe they don't want her to show her face? Maybe she has orders to destroy the buildings and that's it," Tony tries to fight back.

"I don't know. Doesn't seem very hydra. If they're trying to get rid of evidence or something they wouldn't have given us a chance to check it out. They- whoever is doing this- isn't after us. They don't care about what we're doing."

It's silent for awhile as we all ponder what this could mean. If.. if this is Alex, then maybe she isn't working for Hydra? I don't know what she is doing but.. maybe there's an explanation.

Maybe all of our information is wrong.

Maybe I was wrong.

"Well, Clint. I think you have a point. But they could be just doing that to throw us off. Don't lower your guard. Still be ready for anything," Steve finally speaks up.

"Of course, Cap. Just wanted to put that out there. This was a planned attack.. but just on the building. Now.. on to the next location? Maybe beat whoever this is to it?"

"It's Alex. And yes, on to the next location. But be careful, we've mapped out all the ones we know of but they aren't all abandoned," really Tony?

"Wait, what? Why would we go to a hydra base that's being used? They've only targeted vacant buildings so far?" This time Carol offers her own input.

"You said it yourself. She's hit the vacant bases so far. Whose to say there isn't a bigger game play in this?" Tony is pushing his luck.

"Why would hydra attack hydra?" Clint says doubtfully. I know he's rolling his eyes.

"Just go to the next base and be on the watch. Stay safe and stay alive," Tony mumbles.

"Those two kind of go hand in hand," Clint says. This time I know he's smirking. Luckily he's one of the ones on our side. Er.. he at least doesn't think Alex is the bad guy..

"Whatever. Just let us know when you've landed and if you have any updates," Tony is grumpy. But seriously, I should be kicking his ass. He's lucky we're on a mission and need to be on a team right now.

And with that they sign off, keeping them on in case we need to communicate with us, but not needing to speak at the moment, until they've made it to their next base. We did all agree not to stay inside the buildings. Seems to be a safer option given the circumstances.

They may not be targeting people specifically, but who is to say what would happen if there's people inside those buildings when they're ready for them to go off?

Because there's only a few left, now and who is to say what will happen next. Whoever this is, they're doing a great job of tearing through hydra.

Now with the silence taking over again, we are left here to mull over his words. Really chew it, seeing how it taste, how it feels; if it's genuine. More specifically, me.

I think Tony is ignoring all of the sense that Clint was making. Catching Nats eye, I can tell she's thinking along the same lines as me.

My heart was still thumping away. How.. how could this be Alex? They weren't even seen, it could really be just about anyone.

Logically in my head I now know that she can teleport, so it wouldn't be that hard for her to get in undetected. But the explosions? Without having them set up ahead of time? I guess she could bring bombs.. but ones that could destroy whole buildings?

And if this is her working for hydra, then why? Because Clint is right. This doesn't seem like a hydra move. And if it is.. well it's definitely new. It could mean.. well it could mean hydra is cleaning house. It could be that they're planning something big and they're burning anything that could weigh them down.

It's all too much. I don't want to have to think about it anymore or worry anymore.

Not that I really have that luxury. She's out there, either setting fires or hiding. And neither of those options brings me comfort.

On top of that I have to worry about my team spread around waiting for my.. ex? girlfriend to set a building on fire. Or, hopefully, someone else who is setting buildings on fire.

Not that that seems plausible. Unless there's another enhanced person who can teleport out there.

Oh, yeah. Besides Spencer, that is. Because there is absolutely no way this is her. Nat would kill her.

My wandering thoughts get cut off once again by Gamora calling in on the comms; the fire hit their building too. They were also left helpless; all they could do was watch the fire rip through the building with ease.

Again, there was no move made to tear into the avengers. Who ever it was never acknowledged their existence, never showed their face.

Now there's only occupied bases left to even go to. If they haven't all bailed ship since the start of this whole thing. It's all going kind of crazy and at this point we're losing track of what is actually left standing.

Maria is apparently out there on Carols team, so we don't really have someone back home to help us out. I'm not even sure what help that would be by now. What are we even going to do?

With a fire igniting in the matter of seconds, consuming an entire building, how can we stop that? It's random and instant and dangerous. And not worth any of our lives.

But what do we do? Back down? Let this person keep terrorizing places?

Wait.. no. That's not what is happening. They aren't terrorizing anything besides old run down buildings that hydra has some kind of control over.

Clint said it; they aren't aiming for people. No villages are being destroyed, no one is attacking anyone or anything.

It's just.. harmless, really. To everyone except hydra. So.. why are we here? What are we doing? What are we really trying to stop?

Maybe.. maybe whoever is doing this.. their intentions are good. In some weird twisted way. I don't know. But I do know I want to make damn sure we get the chance to find out. That whoever this is, be it Alex or some unknown persona, that they get the chance to explain.

Tony isn't getting away with shit.

"Tony."

"What? Do you see something? Someone? Where is she? I know she was your girlfriend but.."

"Tony, shut the fuck up for a moment. We don't actually know it's her, first of all, and whoever this is deserves a right to explain themselves. I don't care what you think.."

"They're a criminal, Wanda. They get what they have coming," Tony cuts me off.

"Then why aren't we all in jail, hm? Because none of us are completely innocent here, Tony. And to be fair, whoever or whatever this is, they aren't exactly trying to take over the world or sending aliens to attack a city or wiping out the people because they aren't good enough.

"They're burning buildings down. Need I remind you, they're buildings belonging to our enemy? And until we know the true reason behind everything, I think we should give them the benefit of the doubt," I end my rant, feeling pretty good about putting Tony in his place.

"Oh, don't go defending my honor now."
