《Into the fire》Chapter Forty Nine

Alex's POV
It's been a long ass shift and I can not wait to tear off my clothes, take a shower, and collapse into bed for as long as humanly possible.
For some reason the drive back home seems impossibly long tonight. My eyes feel extra heavy. Sometimes I wish I didn't have to make the drive back home. Seems to go on forever.
I'm jolted awake when I start hitting the road bumps on the side. I didn't know I was that tired.
Shit. I need to do something to stay awake.
Call my girlfriend? Eh.. it's kind of late..
But my eyes are dropping again.
I'm calling my girlfriend. Hopefully she is awake and I'm not waking her up by calling. I don't normally call, usually opting to send her a text that I made it home, just in case she's asleep.
She answers.
"Hey, sunshine!" I say with as much pep as possible.
"Hey, you," her voice is groggy.
I frown, "did I wake you up? I'm sorry I can hang up, you can go back to sleep. We don't have to -"
"Alex, you're fine. I was just watching a movie, waiting for your text that you made it home. Are you okay? You don't normally call," she's more awake now as she realizes what time it is and the fact that I'm calling.
I let out a light laugh, "yeah, I'm okay. Barely," I mumble that last word just quietly enough so she couldn't hear it. "Was just bored, the drive hime seems extra long tonight. And I missed you." I smile because it's true.
Which makes her smile, "I missed you, too. I can't wait to see you," I see her somewhat shuffle around in her bed.
Don't worry. My phone is on a holder, I'm still watching the road. I'm fine. I'm waking up.
"Oh, I can't wait to take you out on a date. I'm going to sweep you off your feet," I wiggle my eyebrows, knowing she can see it.
"You already have," I know she's smirking without even having to look at the screen.
"I knew I was charming, but I didn't know I was that charming."
I can also tell she's rolling her eyes without looking.
"You're lucky you are," she teases.
"I know I'm lucky. I've got you as my girlfriend," layering in the cheese.
"What a cheese ball," told you.
"You love it, though," I smirk in confidence knowing it's true.

"I do. For some reason, I do." She's laughing. Maybe at me, maybe at the tv.
I shake my head, "so what snacks are you eating?"
She laughs harder, "really?"
"What?"
"Out of everything you could have asked, you ask what snacks I have?"
"Yes. It's the necessities, babe."
"You really do think with your stomach."
"Only most of the time," I admit. "Now, what snacks? And what movie are you watching?"
"I have popcorn and some sour gummy worms, I'm watch Pitch Perfect."
I chuckle, "I love those movies! How far into it are you? How do you have popcorn left?"
"There's more than one movie? And I made a whole bag. Why wouldn't I have popcorn left?"
I'm gobsmacked, "there's three movies! And I must confess, I binge eat the whole bag. I can't help it."
"Huh. I've only seen the first one. You eat the whole bag?"
"Are you, the one that didn't know there were three Pitch Perfect movies, judging me for being able to consume a whole bag of popcorn in one sitting?" I say in mock hurt, teasing her all the way.
"It's not my fault! How was I suppose to know there was more than one? And no, I'm actually kind of impressed."
"Yeah, didn't know your girlfriend was so talented, did you?"
"I did know you were talented. You're amazing, actually."
She got me blushing. I think it's dark enough so she can't tell.
"Anyway.. you need to watch the other two movies."
"Okay. I'll start the second one-"
"No. No, no. I need to watch them with you as you experience them for the first time in all of their awesome glory."
"Cuddling up and watching movies with you? I won't say no to that."
"Good, you aren't allowed."
"Oh? Is that so?"
I swallow thickly, quickly realizing where this could go. And in my stupidity, I quickly change the route of the conversation. "Tell me something about you."
I can tell she wasn't expecting that much of a 180 as there's a moment of silence. Also, she might be thinking of some thing to say.
"I have always wanted to learn how to play guitar," she answers.
Huh. That's adorable. "What's stopped you form learning?"
"I don't know. I guess it just seems like such a simple thing that would take so much time. And I never feel like I have enough."

I purse my lips as I decide what to say, "well, we will never have enough time. Ever. For anything we want. So, I say you should start. Even if you only get to it once in awhile, at least you're trying. And as long as you're having fun, it doesn't matter how long it takes to master it."
She's beaming, her smile making my phone glow even brighter.
"You know, I think you may be on to something there. I might actually have to take your advice."
I place one hand over my heart and one on my forehead for the dramatic effect, "as you should, darling." Don't worry, I'm parked in my driveway already.
Fuck. I love her laugh. It takes my heart and sends it soaring every time I hear it. "I love your laugh."
Is she blushing? I take my phone as I grab my gear so I can head inside.
"I'm in love with your eyebrows."
Okay. I did not expect that one. I honestly freeze in my spot before bringing my phone up to show my very confused self.
"Uh.. I mean.. that sounds weird. I just.. ugh," she face palms. The rambling and stumbling over her words is adorable, though. "I.. I love your eyes, of course. They stand out amongst billions, they let me see everything you're feeling. But your eyebrows.. they show me in a different way. They're so expressive. Like they have a mind of their own. I guess.. I don't know. I just love them," she mumbles.
Okay, how adorable is she? So adorable. Stop it. She's mine.
"You are incredible. And adorable. And the sweetest. And kindest and -"
"Okay, okay. You don't have to be teachers pet, I'm already your girlfriend."
"Hell yeah, you are," I use my keys to unlock my door and step into my house, immediately throwing everything on the ground. Tomorrow me can deal with that.
"So, tell me something else about you." Ah, so we're playing this game.
"Cucumber is like, my favorite flavor."
"Flavor of..?"
"I don't know.. everything. Cucumber tea, cucumber Gatorade, cucumber vodka, plain cucumbers, cucumber lemonade, cucumber.."
"Wait.. cucumber lemonade? Why are they all drinks?"
I now move to my kitchen to get a drink, "currently, I'm thirsty. But everything cucumber is delicious. It's so refreshing and simple. Cucumber lemonade is the best. You haven't lived until you've tried it."
"I guess I'm not alive then."
"Nope. But don't worry. Your amazing girlfriend will bring you to life with the tasty drink for our Pitch Perfect binge."
"Oh, my savior!" She says all dramatic.
"Anything for you, babe," I send her an over the top wink then chug my water.
"I guess you were thirsty."
I smirk at her, causing her to roll her eyes, "you know what I meant."
"Of course, but where's the fun in that?" I shrug.
Then I carry my girlfriend via the phone into my bedroom. "So, c'mon. Give me juicy secret," I joke, starting to brush my teeth as I she speaks.
"I want to travel," man she's going a lot deeper in these than I am. "I have a little bit, for work mostly, but, I don't count it. Not truly. There's so many things I want to see and experience still."
I'm about to be a little bold and presumptuous, "Well, I have a ton of furlough saved up. Pick somewhere you want to go and we'll go. Whenever you can." I add.
Did I really just suggest a trip after dating for a couple of weeks? Yes, apparently, I did.
"Oh yeah?" She's teasing, but I can hear the excitement.
"Yes," I leave no room for doubt.
"Okay. You have a deal." Now I'm peeling off my clothes. Oh, stop. The phone is facing the ceiling. She can't see me. Although..
"Okay. Give me another one."
I take a moment to think, wanting to keep this convo going but also being just about brain dead at the moment.
"I hate bugs. Absolutely hate them. I don't mind snakes or spiders, can not stand bugs. Specifically mosquitos. They're the bane of my existence."
"Wow. I didn't realize bugs affected you so much. Also, snakes? Really?"
Clearly she isn't a fan, "yeah, I'd like a pet snake someday." I jump onto my bed.
"Oh, we are never going to get a snake," she stops all movement as she realizes what she implied.
I let the smile take over my face, "we? We aren't getting any snakes? Never?" I place one arm behind my head as I lay back against my pillow.
She tries to play it off, "well, duh. There is no way I could live with a snake. And.. yeah. You're kind of stuck with me now."
I was only kidding about the snake anyway. Not that I wouldn't get one, but I wouldn't. I smirk a little, "Ya know, I think I could live with that."

No More Respawns
Synopsis: The first time Allen died, he was forced back into a living hell where death is temporary, and power is all that matters. With evil and depravity as the rule, tragedy becomes comedy and life becomes an act. Only a deal with a shady god can get him back to his old life, but what happens if there’s nothing left to save? Maybe hell isn’t so bad if you have infinite lives… until you don’t. Needless to say, it’s all fun and games until there’s no more respawns. Foreword: This story is meant primarily as an action adventure and secondarily as a dark and nihilistic comedy. It may not be readily apparent in the beginning, but that's what I have planned (I feel the need to emphasize the dark; don’t rage at me if it gets too ‘traumatizing’ or something). I’m going to take my time with this, so it won’t immediately inundate you with doom and gloom. This is also a comedy, remember? On that note, if for some cursed reason you just can't handle either the references or the jokes, I am willing to battle in the comments. Anyway, I still put a significant amount of effort into the system, so I hope you enjoy that part. It is a little bulky, I'll admit to that, but I wanted to try something new and its more fun when there's more depth to it. Regardless, I still have a lot of fun doing math in the middle of writing a fictional story (/s). I also want to see if I can keep from messing up the pacing. Many times, I end up going too fast because I'm afraid of the story getting boring, which tends to ironically have the opposite effect. I'm still learning I suppose; we'll see how things go. Lastly, please leave reviews and comments, they really mean a lot to me and (usually) help me improve considerably. I'll be asking for feedback in the polls and I do still check the old ones from time to time. Notes: The story takes a bit of time to develop; give it time if you're here for drama, grimdark, or antihero. The system is all blue boxes and I'm not half-assing the numbers. Chapters will be between 1k and 2k words usually. I always use the oxford coma, fight me. Might drop if rating falls below 4 stars, idk. It depends on how my life is going. Cover drawn by yours truly in MS paint. (I have skill, I know)
