《Into the fire》Chapter Forty Eight

Alexs POV
It has been a few blissful weeks since my first date with Wanda. And if you couldn't tell, it's going really well. I've been able to take her on a few more dates on my days off and each one is better than the next.
I'm really enjoying getting to know her better.
My track record has been pretty rough, though thankfully Wanda knows about most of that.
Maia.. maybe it was young blind love, but it was still love. And her cheating on me.. well that was pretty fucking low. And I still haven't talked to her or my so called best friend. They can rot together for all I care.
And then there was Yelena.
I didn't think I'd find someone again after Yelena. She was the one hope I had after Maia. When she left it was pretty soul crushing.
I really thought we were going somewhere. We had moved in together. I was even going to start looking at engagement rings.
Then she ended it out of no where.
And I figured I was just not meant for anything to last.
Don't get upset with me. I'm saying all of this for a reason.
Because after all of that, she was still there.
Even though I thought she was a selfish bitch, she was able to tear down that horrible wall and let me see her beyond the 'avenger' title.
And I could slap myself because she was right there in front of me this whole time.
But luckily she never really went away.
And now she's mine. Well, I'm hoping to ask her to be mine officially.
She's coming over to the firehouse as Max offered to make dinner and invite her over for it.
I couldn't say no and Wanda was very excited at the prospect.
That's what I'm helping prepare for as we speak. Er.. talk?
"Wow. Am I hallucinating? Or sleep walking? Quick, someone pinch me!" Andrew calls out, making Andy run over and pinch him.
"Hey!" He rubs the spot on his arm where she pinched him, a little hurt.
"What? You said to pinch you," Andy shrugs then walks off to do whatever she's going to do.
I can't help but laugh at them.
"Anyway," Andrew draws our attention back to him. "I really think I'm seeing things. Because
there's no way I'm actually witnessing Alex cooking."
I stick my tongue out at him, "I don't know what you mean. I cook."
He scoffs at the idea. He's not the only one.
"What? I do!"
"Blue, I love you, but you don't cook. Or.. cook that well," Max calls me out.
"Rude. At least I try," I defend myself.
"Yes you do. And it's adorable," Liz says, I narrow my eyes at her.
I know I'm a little laid back, but I'm still their lieutenant.
"I've also never seen you cook when it wasn't your turn," Andrew points out as he grabs a tomato and pops it in his mouth.
Max swipes at his hand, "hey! That's for dinner."
I ignore their transaction, "that is so not true. It just so happens that I'm not a great cook, like you said. So you don't want me to help you cook."

"Pshh. You'd only get better by helping. So what's the special occasion now?" Andy asks as she walks back into the kitchen.
"Really? Et tu Brute?" I try to avoid her question knowing how much shit they'll give me for it.
"Don't be so dramatic. Just answer the question," Andrew leans against the counter and raises his eyebrows, not giving me room to ignore it.
Max just keeps cooking because she knows.
Might as well get it over with. Wanda will be here soon anyway and this will just get it over with.
"Wanda is coming over for dinner," I mutter out.
"I'm sorry, what was that?" Andrew teases, leaning closer while putting his hand to his ear, "I couldn't quite hear you."
I sigh looking up from my chopping, "Wanda is coming over for dinner."
Cue the obnoxious 'oos', 'awes' and whistles.
I just let them. Better to get it over with like I said.
"Hey! Leave her alone. She's trying here, okay. And she really likes her. So don't fuck it up," Max sticks up for me, pointing her knife at everyone in turn.
It's enough to shut them up.
And of course as timing would have it, that's when I get a call from Wanda to tell me she's here.
I rush to the door to let her walk in.
But first I bring her in for a kiss. It's been too long.
"Well, hello to you too, Blue," she chuckles once we pull away.
"I missed you," I admit, keeping my hand on her back as we walked towards the kitchen.
"I missed you, too," she pecks my lips once more.
Cue everyone trying not to make a big deal that Wanda is here.
They're pretty tame about it, given their usual behavior.
Luckily they stay fairly civil as we dish up dinner and take our seats.
It might sound like I'm making them out to be wild animals, but they kind of are. Just trust me.
"So, Wanda. What are your intentions with our Blue?" Andrew speaks up, making me just about choke on my pasta.
"You okay, babe?" Wanda asks as she gently pays my back.
After coughing for a moment or two, "yeah.. yeah. I'm.. fine."
"So? Wanda?"
I shoot daggers over to Andrew.
He doesn't care.
"You do not have to answer him, sunshine," I quietly tell Wanda.
She smiles at me, "it's fine." Then she turns to the rest of the team, "I assume you mean 'am I going to cheat on her or leave out of the blue?"
Andrew nods his head, "pretty much. As you know Alex here has been put through some shit she did not deserve. Nor does she deserve anything like it again. I will not stand by and watch her get hurt. Again."
I'm just sitting here staring at my food as I push a tomato around.
I do at least whisper to Wanda, "I'm really sorry. I told them not to say anything."
"It's fine, Alex. I get it," she once again speaks only to me before addressing everyone else, a serious look on her face as she does.

Oh boy.
"I get it. You want to protect her heart. Well, so do I. I hate that she was hurt before and I don't want to see it happen again. I promise you I will do everything in my power to make her happy and care for her. I don't plan on going anywhere. In fact.."
She fully turns to me, a smirk starting to form and I'm just confused. She turns me as well so I'm facing her.
"I was going to do this in a more romantic, less in front of people way, but I guess this works. Alex, I wanted to know if you'd like to be official? I've really enjoyed getting to know you and I want to spend more time together. And I'd like that to be with you as my girlfriend."
"No!" I shout, throwing my head into my hands, a little disappointed.
I quickly stand up and start to walk out of the room.
"Alex! I'm sorry. I really thought we were there, I'm not trying rush anything!" A hand grabs my arm and I know it's her having caught up to me.
I turn around to her with a confused look, "what?"
She looks so sad.. it's literally breaking my heart.
"I'm sorry. I guess I just thought after all of the dates and everything that we.."
Woah. What is happening?
I cup her face and bring her eyes up meet to mine, "woah, sunshine. What are you talking about?"
"You.. you said no? I asked if you wanted to be official and you said no. Actually, you yelled it. And I figured I must have pushed you.."
Well, shit. Aren't I an asshole.
I got way too caught up in my head there that I forgot I actually yelled no to her question.
"No, no, baby." I bring her into a kiss and she returns it. "I.. got a little caught up there. Um.. I wasn't really saying no to you. I just.."
Ugh this is going to ruin it but I suppose I already kind of did that.
"Can you, um, just.. wait here a moment?" I ask hopeful.
"Uh, sure. I guess."
With those words I take off to my office, not wanting to prolong this anymore than I have to. I quickly return to her once I've secured the package.
"So, I only yelled no because.."
I catch movement from the corner of my eye.
Yup. We're still right where everyone can see us.
Time to make this more private.
"On second thought, let's talk about this elsewhere," I suggest.
Wanda looks behind her. She laughs as she nods in agreement.
I pull her into my office, closing the door behind us.
"Okay, now that we're finally away from everyone, I wasn't trying to say no to being your girlfriend," I start to explain.
"Okay.. so it's a yes?" She asks still confused.
"Well.. funny thing, actually. I uh, I was going to ask you to be my girlfriend.."
She breaks into a wide smile, "really?"
Ah, her smile and her excitement. And oh my gosh she's doing the nose scrunch. I can't handle it.
I have to kiss her.
"Really," I whisper against her lips.
She brings our lips back together jumping up to wrap her legs around my waist, my hands going to her ass to support her.
After our not so brief make out.. she places her legs back on the ground but we keep our foreheads together catching our breath.
"So.." she takes a breath, "why did you run away on me earlier?"
I tilt my head back with a questioning look because I thought I explained that.
Then I realized.
"Oh! Right. Uh.. well now it seems really cheesy.." what the hell was I thinking? I go to tuck the item behind my back in hopes she wouldn't notice.
She does. Of course.
"What's that?" She points while tipping to the side in hopes of getting a peek.
I push it farther back, "Nothing.."
Oh shit.
If that's not the scariest head tilt I've ever seen..
"Uh, it's for you. It's a shirt. It's stupid," I rush out. How is it fair that she has that much power in her head tilt? She can already read minds and shit.
"Let me see it!" She squeals.
She went from scary head tilt to squealing
girl(friend?) in a second flat.
I reluctantly bring it back around and hand it to her.
She quickly unfolds the shirt and inspects it.
"Awe. It's a firehouse 11 shirt! I love it! Thank you!"
I look down to my hands, distracting myself with the rings on my fingers as I mumble, "that's not all of it.."
She gives me a weird look. I guess she heard me because she asks, "what do you mean?"
I let out a breath, grabbing the shirt to turn it around so she can see the back side.
"Keahi? You put your last name on it?"
I kick at the nonexistent dirt, "yeah.. I know it's stupid. But you liked my other firehouse shirts and I thought maybe it would be cute if it had my last name when I asked you to be my girlfriend.."
I am slowly regretting everything.
Until her lips are crashing into mine again.
"So, you like it?"
"I do," she smiles, but kisses me again.
"We should totally get out of here, right?" I ask.
"Mm, definitely.." she takes off her shirt and I'm ready to pick her up and take her in my office when she places a hand on my chest effectively stopping me.
"After dinner." Then she puts the new shirt on.
Damn it.
"Okay.." I give in, grabbing her hand and walking back out to the group.
"You look incredible in that shirt," then I nibble her ear, knowing it's only driving her crazy.

Red Street Daybreak
August Samuel Hatch was born under an inauspicious pattern of stars. It's granted him what is widely considered the most unlucky of inconveniences: becoming host to a powerful but pernicious spirit that will act as his guide and protector--and one day end his life. Sairne is sworn to stand by August's side and, when the fancy strikes her, advise him, all in the service of atoning for a past life she can’t remember having committed a grave enough offense to earn her soul indentureship in the mortal realm. Bound by a celestial contract neither one can negotiate, their fates are all they've ever known. But in a city ruled by religious right and where magic runs deep as bedrock, their search for a missing friend leads them to a dark conspiracy that could transmute the very magic that binds them to their fates, and that might grant them the ultimate choice: do they save the city or save themselves? Cross-posted on Wattpad and Ao3. For fans of fantasy YA story beats if they starred adults instead, 1920s inspired setting, lots of banter, larger cast of characters, somewhat soft magic system. Completed, but being actively edited prior to posting! I'm the only captain on this ship, so mind any errors.
