《Into the fire》Chapter Thirty One

Wandas POV

So I told Nat what had really been bothering me.

More than just Alex and her mixed signals and my mixed feelings.

I told her what Alex really said; not just that she hated the avengers, but why.

What she said while we were helping pick up after that huge fire. How we should be out doing more of that stuff.

Her words about her being out there helping the people everyday. How she is one of them. How we aren't. How we let our powers make it seem like we can't do the small stuff. Because the small stuff matters, too.

She's out there with every fire or scenario that arises, not just the ones with big, bad villains.

That we stay up in our compound until it's a world situation.

Which is great, and we do save people, we have saved the world and beyond.

But there's more going on in the world.

How she's right.

How she is so right that we can't sit backs anymore.

We can do more and we should. We have to do more.

"Wow. I guess I didn't realize what she said went so far beyond just hating us. But.. I can see her point. I can see why it's been bothering you."

I knew she'd understand, "thank you, Nat. Now I just can't help but know I should do more. And I know it shouldn't have taken her pointing that out to me for me to want to."

She places a hand on my arm, "hey, don't beat yourself up, okay? You've done a lot and saved a lot of lives. We all have. And it matters now that you want to make a difference."

"So.. you think we should, too? That we should try to do more on the less than 'world domination' level?"

"Absolutely. I think it's a great idea," she smiles.

I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding, "I'm so glad you agree."

"Of course I do. I'm sorry you thought you couldn't tell me sooner."

"Yeah.. I just didn't know how weird it would be with Alex and Yelena.."

"Hey, it's a situation no one could have predicted. You're not telling me you want to hook up with her or anything," she laughs.

I try to laugh too, but..

"Oh my go.. don't tell me you actually want to.."

"No! No. I'm just.. thinking that Lena is lucky."

We both laugh now, "okay, I do not need to think about that."

"Just imagine how she feels about you and Spencer," I point out.

She raises her hands, "okay, okay. Fair enough. Let's not keep thinking about that."

"No arguments from me."

Then we kind of drift off. My thoughts of everything we could start doing to help out taking over everything else.

"So.." Nat starts, getting my attention gently, "what do you think we should do?"

"Well, I have plenty of ideas on what we could do and how I want to help. I think we have some steps to take before that. And I know just where we should start."

——————

That's how we ended up in Tony's office, trying to explain why I think we should do more and why without completely divulging who convinced me.

"Okay.. so.. you're telling me you think we should do more?"

"Yes." Nat and I say at the same time. Yeah, she's my back up.

"Because us saving the world.. the galaxy, isn't enough?"

"Of course it's enough. We've all done our job. We did what we have to do. But that's the point! We should be doing more than just enough. We have the abilities and resources to help a lot more people that we do." I am fired up, the new passion to make a difference driving me forward.

"He looks at me for a moment. "You do realize how many foundations I support? How much I give in donations and to charities?"

I let out a groan in frustration, "yes, of course. I'm sure you give plenty of your money away to people that need it. And you should keep doing it. But there are communities out there that need more than a hand out. They need someone to actually try to make a difference. We're a bunch of super humans and people with crazy abilities that just sit around in a movie room half of our time. Don't you think we could do so much more?"

"You think we're just sitting around? That we don't go on missions all of the time?" Tony asks.

I didn't think he would be so difficult to persuade.

"Of course not, Tony. We're just trying to say that we could do more with our time. If Wanda and I have to do it on our own, then fine. But it would be nice to have the whole team working with us," Nat speaks up.

"Like when we helped the fire fighters the other week. Stuff like that makes a difference. And it shows people that we're more human.."

"Isn't that what we don't want? We don't want them to think we're normal. If they do, then why would they believe we can save them? That we have the ability to?" Tony challenges me.

I'm wearing thin.

"They know what we've done, Tony. We're just a bunch of figure heads to people. They don't see us as anything other than some freaks that stopped some aliens."

"Why should they see us as anything other than that?"

"Because we are more than that! We are more than these powers and these things that others forced us to be or made us to be! But we have powers and we have the resources. Why shouldn't we use them for something more?"

I am so fired up right now. Why is he putting up such a fight?

"I guess people don't get to see us on the other missions. It would be good to let people know we're still around and can still help. Plus, helping the fire fighters every once in awhile would be really good publicity."

He was so close. So close. But he just had to bring up the cameras.

"No, Tony. This isn't about having the cameras see us and paint us in this pretty picture for people to see. It's not suppose to be a publicity stunt!"

Tony doesn't talk, which is good. He's saying a bunch of bullshit. So I take that as an invite to keep talking.

"This is our chance to really make a difference to people that could really use some help. Beyond stopping some aliens and leaving them to pick up the messes. Messes that they can't take care of on their own. Messes we've helped create."

I'm finally done with my little rant. He's just standing there. I didn't realize Tony was still so selfish. I don't know what else to say to Tony to get his big head to understand. Except maybe exactly that.

Actually, why don't I? "Tony I don't.."

And then he smiles.

"Why are you smiling?" I ask, uncertain of what could be going through his mind.

"We'll go with your plan. We'll help fix what we've broken."

Oh. I thought he'd fight more.

He moves around his desk and closer to us until he reaches out and grabs my shoulders.

"Wanda, I'm not heartless. I think this is a fantastic idea. Of course we should do more. I've never seen you so fired up about something. I just wanted you to get it all out. I could tell there was a lot you had to say."

This motherfucker played me.

I don't know what to say.

"So.. you were just.." Nat starts.

"I was just letting Wanda say what she had to say. Making sure it's something she really wanted. I can tell that you do. And I agree."

I narrow my eyes at him, but in the end he is willing to go along with my idea, "okay..good."

"Right. So, did you have any specific ideas on how you want to go about this, or was this just a spur of the moment 'let's just talk to Tony' kind of thing?" He asks.

Well, I wasn't planning on getting this far today. I didn't even expect to talk to Nat about this today.

I look over to Nat who is looking back at me, letting me know that this is my ship and she's letting me steer it.

"I do have some ideas." I mean, kind of. A few of them came to mind the last few days as I was thinking of what Alex said.

"Okay, great. How about we talk about it tomorrow though, yes? It's pretty late and Pepper really wants me home," Tony suggests.

Knowing that Nat and Tony are behind me on this relaxes me and I realize just how tired I actually am after the long day of breaking things with Nat.

"Yeah, that actually sounds fantastic. Nat, you'll be there tomorrow too, right?"

She smiles, "of course, Wanda. I've got your back on this."

"Thank you. We'll see you tomorrow Tony.."

"At 11. I won't be here until 11," he stops me.

"Works for me," I agree.

"Yeah, I'm okay with that," Nat says.

And with that we left Tony's office and went up to our rooms where Nat and I said goodnight before disappearing behind our doors.

And I actually slept like a rock all night and into the morning.

Knowing I was going to do more to help fix some of what we've broken, well, it's giving me more purpose; it's more to wake up for and get out of bed for.

And that's exciting.
