《Into the fire》Chapter Seven

Wandas POV
The drive back to the compound was quick and short.
Okay, it wasn't, but it seemed like it.
I pulled up and walked in with a smile on my face. I'm not sure where it came from or why it stayed.
Okay, I do. But I don't.
Nat is, not surprisingly, the first to see and greet me.
"Well, hello there, Wanda. I see you made it back to the compound.." she checks her watch, "only a few hours after you left. How'd it go?"
I roll my eyes, but it's more playful. Like I said, I'm in a good mood for some reason.
"I found her," it's all I say before I walk away, heading towards the kitchen to grab a snack as I realized I never ate lunch.
Nat is quickly on my heals. "That's all I get?! You found her? And then what happened! I want details," she shakes my shoulder gently.
I don't let it deter me, I grab some leftovers and throw them into the microwave before I allow myself to give in to her demands.
"Well, I went to the hospital first like you suggested. Which worked out well. I did find some nurses that.. knew her.."
Nat cuts me off, "why do you say it like that?"
Might as well tell her. Besides, Nat could probably analyze what went down better than I can and I need to know.
"I ran into one of her exes," I state plainly.
Nats eyebrows raise, "oh?"
"Yup. One of the nurses working at the time had dated her. Even warned me about finding her."
"Warned you?"
"Told me to watch my heart or something about the person behind the dazzling eyes."
"Dazzling?"
"Yes. They're dazzling. They're like a cold drink in the middle of summer, they're.."
"Damn, Wanda. I believe you. I guess I'll have to see them for myself. But please, continue," she sits on the chair across from me as I wait for the microwave to go off.
"Well, after she warned me and I assured her I was only looking for her to thank her," Nat scoffs at this, I ignore it. "She told me the fire house I could find her at. Or the one she worked at. She didn't know her schedule anymore."
"Okay? So a warning from the ex. That's not totally abnormal. I mean, most exes will tell you how crazy their ex is."

Okay, so that didn't bother Nat as much as I thought it would. Maybe if I could remember exactly what she said..
"Well, I went to the fire house, of course. Because I had gone all that way and asked her ex, I figured I should at least meet the girl," I feel the need to really explain.
Nat just waits patiently for me to continue.
"Right. So I got there and asked for the blue eyed girl and they knew exactly who I was talking about. They were going to help me find her as she was at work that day. But she came out laughing with some blonde.
"But.. when she saw me there, she was like a different person. An anger took over and she wanted to know why I was there."
"Different person?"
I run my hand through my hair, "yeah, I don't know how else to put it. She was so happy and bubbly with the blonde then she just switched to this angry, aggressive person.."
"What'd she say? What'd she do? What did you do?" Nat is on the edge of her seat.
"She didn't want to talk to me, but agreed for a few minutes. I got her to open up a little bit, but once I said I was grateful for the opportunities and doctors I had here, she shut right back down and left."
Nat furrows her brows, seemingly in thought.
"Hm. Interesting. And you never met her before? You don't know why she would act that way when she saw you?"
"Not a clue. Never met her before she pulled me out of that building," I shrug. "And I would know those eyes anywhere. There's no way I knew her before."
"Hmm.. well I'm sorry it wasn't what you were hoping for with rainbows and fireworks," she hops off of the stool. "But, I guess this means you can move on and go out with Lexi," she's smirking again.
"Ugh.. yeah. I guess. We have been texting since I woke up and she said she still wants to go on that date.."
"Do it! Ask her right now!" Nat is way too excited for this.
"Why are you so excited?" I narrow my eyes, suddenly very unsure of Nats intentions.
"Because! This could be good for you! I want you to be happy. And then maybe we can go on double dates.." she adds that in there slyly.

"Double dates?"
"Mhm. I'm sure my girl would be happy to."
"It is about damn time I met her. She must be really special to have you all giddy like this."
"She is. I can't wait for you to meet her!"
"Well then, we'll have to set it up."
———————
It's been a couple of weeks since I went to the fire house.
I've been going about my days like normal. A few missions with the team, some movie nights. We even went out a couple of times for dinner and to some clubs.
It was all a lot of fun.
But everywhere I went, all I could do was look for those blue eyes in the crowd of people.
I know I would recognize them if I saw them. And no matter how cold she was when I met her officially, something told me the person behind that cold stare still held the soft look she gave me as she carried me out of the burning building.
And I couldn't help but want to know more about her. More about the situation, about what I could have done wrong.
It has been plaguing my mind.
Which is really rather unfortunate because I have even gone on a couple of dates with Lexi.
It hasn't been anything too serious, it really can't be with the way Blue's eyes takes over my thoughts and leads me down a path I shouldn't let her.
But it still happens.
So the dates have been fun. We've gone out to a movie once, a dinner, even went to an amusement park for the day.
Like I said, it's all been fun.
And I wish I could give in and let Lexi take my thoughts, or better yet me, along with her.
But I don't feel right until I can figure out this issue with Blue.
And I have absolutely no idea how I am suppose to do that.
I clearly can't just show up at the fire house again. The one time with the excuse of thanking her was enough, anything else would be pushing my luck and I don't want to push her any farther.
If that's possible. It's not like we talk or anything. I'm probably a long forgotten thought to her by now.
And that's a little painful to swallow.
So for now, until I can come up with some crazy plan of winning her over, even if it's just to talk, well I'm all about the distractions.
And that's what tonight will be about.
"I am so glad we are finally able to do this!" Nat cheers as we all raise our drinks in cheers.
"Yes! I can't believe we waited so long for a girls night. We need to do this more often," Val agrees.
We haven't been here that long yet, but most of us are pretty gone ourselves.
Not having much time away from a group of super hero guys will do that to you.
Or any guy, really.
"Alright, ladies. A round of shots curtesy of the men over in the far corner," the bar tender says as she places the tray down.
We all grab one and look over to the guys, raising our glasses in a cheer to them before downing the shots.
None of us are really interested. This is a girls night after all. And most of us have interests that lie elsewhere.
I'm in the mood for another shot or two, wanting to drown out the loud thoughts of not just me, but the others accompanying me.
I grab Nats hand and drag her over to the bar so she can get some shots with me.
She doesn't even question it.
As we wait for the bartender to pour the shots, someone new comes through the door. And like any other person, my attention is drawn to the new comers.
And wouldn't you know it.
There's Ms. Blue Eyes.
I don't stop the smile that takes over my entire face.
I'm not sure why, but I take this as a good sign.
And seeing her in good spirits as she walks in the room with her friends only brightens mine that much more.
Soon I'm being nudged by Nat so I can help her carry the drinks.
With every step over to our table I'm on the verge of tripping.
Yup.
I'm watching her enter the room with confidence, leaving her friends to head over to the bar so she can grab a drink.
And it's at that moment, as I'm walking away from the bar back to our table and she's walking toward the bar to start her night that we catch each other's eye.
And again,
Those ocean blue eyes turn cold as ice.

Gina the goblin, Dungeon Extraordinaire
Goburi was a goblin, a very poor goblin and now that she was dying that meant one thing, she could not even pay the toll to cross into the afterlife. Goblins worshipped gold, gold watched over them and Goburi had never earned or lost a mote, finding herself to be something of a heritic. Like most descisions in life it had felt like the nobler pursuit at the time, but with the darkness closing in, she realized how terrified she was. Even if she had died in debt, the great elusive glimmer in the depths would have put her soul in a new body, bringing with her the debt and some vague memories. Another chance to die in the black. Goburi's last thoughts were dark specters of regret chasing themselves in circles of thought until she prayed for it to be done. She really had no idea where the souls of goblin heritics went, it had never really happened before. A new dungeon was born, a crystal of pure magic containing a soul that failed to pass to the afterlife. As it gained awareness something else came through that was never supposed to be there. Memories of a workshop, and an uncomfortable need to earn gold.

Life of a Core
After a disembodied voice had told him he was what amounted to an exceptionally talented rock, it had been hard to not let it go to his non-existent head. Until, random chance had decided to give him a square kick in the minerals. Which had in turn forced him to fend for himself in an unknown land, all while he attempted to make sense of his place in the world. Truthfully though, all he had really wanted to do from the start had been to bury himself a hundred feet below the ground and be left to his own devices. Yet, for one reason or another, nobody ever seemed willing to leave the dungeon-building core alone long enough to actually make one. Each chapter will average around two to three thousand words, the release schedule is still a WIP but you should expect the first six chapters to be released over the next six days. This is planned out as a dungeon building fiction, but don't expect it right off the bat! The story is a depiction of the everyday adventures (alongside an overarching plot) of what I imagine a dungeon core would experience when thrust into a random environment where everything and everyone tried to covet or eat him. I also really enjoy reading the comments and reviews people leave and would love to get some reader involvement with the story itself, likely through polls at the end of each chapter. I hope you enjoy my story! (If you feel like some of the characters seem familiar, you may have read some older work I wrote a while back under a different account. If you happen to be one of my old readers and recognize the similarities, I'm happy to have you back!)
