It was over. Or at least it should've been.

Colby's eyes were fixed on Sam, gauging his reaction to the demolition of the building before them. He remained at a considerable distance from him, his arms folded over his chest and his eyes glossy. He was sure Sam was aware of his gaze, he fidgeted but held back from returning the stare.

Colby was at a loss. He watched Sam avoid him like the plague over the last few days, convinced that Coby was some sort of imposter and Colby had no idea what to do to rectify this situation. This morning Sam was screaming and wailing about how it was all over because today was D-day, Colby was going to die in that building- the real Colby. This was all said between him and their friends; he didn't breathe a word to Colby, in fact, this was the first time they were together in person.

Nothing could be done, it all seemed so hopeless and all Colby could do was stare in distant despair as Sam evaded interaction. Despite the anguish, Colby was relieved to finally see him now, though he couldn't approach him or speak to him, seeing him put a minor piece of his mind at ease. He looked tired, extremely so but otherwise he didn't seem to have any bodily injuries.

Colby glanced away from him for a moment at the startling sound of explosives going off, even through the head-muffs, it caused his ears to buzz and ring and he flinched, raising his hands to press the gear harder against his ears. It was pretty satisfying to watch the foundation collapse I on itself, debris flying through the air and smoke billowing from the destruction. It was like a video game.

He looked back at Sam, stunned when their eyes met in the middle. Sam was watching him. His face was devoid of emotion, he looked as though he wasn't thinking anything in particular which Colby supposed was better than the fearful, disgusted look he'd exchanged a few days ago. Colby cracked a lopsided smile, hoping to show Sam that he wasn't angry or displeased but attempting a peaceful exchange.

Sam didn't smile back, he simply looked back towards the building and Colby once again felt his heart plunge as his shoulders slouched in disappointment.

Sam and Colby separately spoke to the agents on site, discussing logistics and confirming the contracts they were required to sign. Colby spoke in an absentminded way, his eyes constantly drifting to find the figure of Sam, his fear of being unable to see him from now on spiking deep inside him. How long was this going to last? Was he ever going to be able to convince Sam that he wasn't an imposter? He wasn't sure how...

Colby finished speaking with his agent hurriedly when he noticed Sam walking offsite, likely heading to his car. Colby told the agent he'd meet her back at her office another time and rushed off, ignoring her urgent calls and frustrate sigh behind him.

Sam's head was downcast as he shuffled his way out the gate and towards his car when Jake was waiting for him, since no one really trusted him to drive on his own. Colby would've gone with him, but since he made that difficult they had to do what they could.

"Sam!" Colby called after him, momentarily regretting doing so as he expected him to just move faster in attempt to avoid him. However, Sam surprised him by halting his walk and turning to face him, the same distant look in his pale eyes. Colby staggered as he approached him, completely stunned by the fact that Sam was even giving him the time of day. He didn't get too close, not wanting him to scurry off despite how badly Colby's body itched to be in close vicinity with his lover.

He halted a few feet from him, staring at him with a sense of longing he couldn't even try to hide if he wanted to. Sam looked so tired and worn out, it was clear he hasn't been sleeping well as of late. His eyes were sunken and dark and his face was sickly pale. He looked dead. Colby wanted nothing more than to take him in his arms and tell him that everything was going to be okay.

"Sam..." He trailed off, trying to actually figure out what to say to him. What could he possibly say?

"Yes?" He flinched at the sound of Sam's voice, hoarse and raw. He'd been abusing his voice clearly. But despite that, Colby relished the sound of it after being neglected of hearing it after so long. "Are you going to say something or can I just go?" Sam spoke again when Colby didn't respond, pointing back at his car as an indication that he wanted to leave.

"I... Can we please... Talk?" Colby dared a small step towards him.

"We're talking right now aren't we?"

"You know what I mean", Colby sighed with a roll of his eyes.

"No, I don't think I do", Sam crossed his arms as he maintained a neutral expression, almost as though he was trying to not show any emotion. "I can't imagine what good talking to a demon will do", he added and Colby slowly closed his eyes and count to ten. This. This was infuriating. Sam would never listen for as long as he thought Colby was a demon.

"I'm not a demon", Colby spoke slowly, trying not to lose his mind on the spot. He couldn't imagine screaming about not being a demon would do any good convincing him.

"That's what all demons would say", Sam pointed out and Colby cringed a bit.

"That's what anyone would say. I'm not a demon Sam. What can I do to prove to you I'm not a demon?" Colby tried to keep his tone even, but this topic was a long term problem. Demon activity and the paranormal was the crux of all their problems, so being accused of being one set a nerve off in Colby. He wanted to throw a fit, he wanted to scream and cry and wail and tell him he wasn't a monster and he didn't want to hurt him. But he couldn't do that.

"I suppose you can't", Sam shrugged and turned away from him. "So that's the end of that talk", he started to go off again but Colby wasn't nearly done.

"Sam, what if you're wrong and you're just avoiding me, Colby, your best friend, your lover and the person who's always there for you? What then?" Colby questioned and Sam paused as he looked back at him, his brow risen a bit as if curious about his words.

"And if you're not Colby?"

"Well, would it be that bad?" Colby rose his hands in a dejected manner. "According to you, Colby died in there. Are you willing to live without me? After everything, do you just want to keep going acting like I'm some sort of imposter while coincidentally forgetting that you had a Colby?" Emotion swirled in Sam's eyes as he looked forward again, Colby staring at the back of his head as if observing those gears turning in his skull.

"Quit trying to manipulate me".

"That's just you trying to avoid the truth Sam", Colby gave up on distance and trekked towards him, Sam clearly hearing the sounds of his footsteps and spinning around wildly to look at him. Colby grabbed him by his upper arms and pulled him close while he tried to veer away in vain. "Listen to me Sam, I love you, you know I do. We've been through enough shit for you to be doubting me. Can't you of all people tell that it's me? I need you right now, please don't abandon me", Colby shook him a bit, as if trying to rid him of doubts and Sam briefly gave him a fearful expression when they touched but as he spoke his features hardened a bit, as if trying to steel himself against the words being spoken to him.

"Let me go".

"Sam, look at me! I'm in broad daylight, everyone can see me, all our friends know it's me, do you really think a demon is that convincing? Please believe me, I need you desperately, I can't do this without you", Colby's voice broke and his eyes scrunched when he noticed that Sam's firm expression ceased to change, like his words weren't reaching him at all.

Was this it for them? Was it just going to end with Sam believing for the rest of their lives that he's some sort of monster?

He pulled Sam close and pressed his head against Sam's chest, trying his best not to just break down right there but he was failing miserably. "Why did you go back by yourself? Why'd you have to do that? We were doing so well Sam, we were getting better and you had to go back... Why..." He squeezed Sam's upper arms in frustration and he heard him hiss in pain before he ripped himself out of Colby's grasp, turning away from him and practically running back to his car.

Colby couldn't hep but drop to his knees as Sam briefly argued with Jake before they both climbed in the car and drove off. He bit his lip hard and tilted his head back to look up at the cloudy sky, his mind like static. Maybe Sam was right? Maybe he wasn't Colby and he was a demon? Maybe he was an imposter? Why was this happening? Why? Why why why why?
