《Golden | H.S.》Chapter 5

A/N: Again, the song doesn't really have anything to do with the chapter, I just think it's fantastic and recommend it! I think it fits a café vibe perfectly.

Speaking of cafés, in case you can't tell from the blue and yellow floor, some of this chapter takes place at the infamous Beachwood Café! It looks so pretty, I wanna go someday.

Enjoy!

"Um." I take a deep breath. "My parents were amazing people. They were my best friends. I didn't have any siblings and kids at school never treated me too well, so I was really close to them. They were everything to me." I feel the water in my eyes and curse under my breath.

"You don't have to-"

"But last year." I sniff. "Last year, they wanted to go out to dinner to celebrate some promotion my dad got at work. I asked them to let me drive 'cuz I had just gotten my car and I was obsessed with driving her everywhere. But they told me no. They said they would drive, and I dropped it. But I should've pushed it. I should've- I should've made them let me drive."

I start breathing more heavily and I feel Harry place his hand on mine, loosening my grip on the steering wheel and placing our joined hands on his leg.

I try to even out my breathing and continue, "Dinner was nice. We laughed and we talked about how our day went. My dad even talked about taking us on a trip since he was getting a raise." I laugh pathetically and wipe my eyes with the sleeve of my cardigan.

"And then, we were driving back h-home, and a truck hit us. The driver had fallen asleep," I chuckle dryly. "He swerved to our side of the road and hit us head-on. My paren-." I choke on a sob. "I was the only one who survived. Made it out with a few scars." I finish with a deep sigh and look over to our joined hands, giving Harry's a grateful squeeze, before looking into his eyes.

His eyes were droopy. They weren't as bright as usual. I don't like that.

"That's why I don't let anyone drive me. I have to drive or else what happened that night will happen again. I can't let that happen again, Harry. I can't."

He squeezes my hand again and moves himself as close to me as possible, the console in the middle digging into his stomach. "I can't even comprehend what you went through. And I won't pretend to. I'm not going to tell you I'm sorry, because that's the last thing I would want to hear if this was me." I nod in agreement with him. "But I don't think you should let something that you couldn't control, control you. From what you've said, I can tell your parents were great people."

I nod, feeling his hand that isn't holding mine skimming up to my face and cupping my cheek. "I don't think they would've wanted you to hold yourself back from doing things because of something you couldn't control." He pauses. "Are they the reason you don't sing, either?"

I sigh and look down, "They were the only people I ever sang for. I just don't feel the want to sing anymore. Not since then."

His thumb caresses my cheek, "Well from the little mumbles I've heard from you, you have a beautiful voice. And I'm sure your parents wouldn't want you to hide it."

I glance back up to look in his sincere eyes, "Thank you," I breathe.

"I mean every word. And you should know that I never lie either. Ever." He nods once at me, slowly removing his hand from my face and facing forward again. "I want to take you somewhere. Can I?" He looks back at me.

I nod, "Yes." I go to pull out of the spot before I stop myself, letting out a deep breath. "Would you drive?"

His eyes widen and I continue, "I mean, if you want. 'Cuz you're right. I shouldn't let the past control me. They wouldn't want that and I- Well, like I said, I trust you. So, would you?"

After a moment, he nods fervently and releases his hold on my hand to take his seatbelt off. We get out of the car and switch places and I hold onto the door handle harshly once I'm inside.

He looks over at me as his seatbelt clicks, "Are you sure?"

"Yes. Just go slow. Please." He nods at my response with a comforting smile and pulls out of the spot.

I try not to squeeze my eyes shut when he's on the road and try to focus on the song playing. It's quiet for a while before I hear Harry's voice over my harsh breathing.

"You're welcome by the way."

I look over with a confused expression. "Huh?"

He smiles and continues. "Before we talked, you were thanking me for bringing you. You're welcome. And thank you for coming with me. I loved it. A lot."

I give a smile, "Oh. Of course. It was beautiful. I loved it, too."

Harry keeps making small talk throughout the drive to wherever he's taking me. It's obvious he's trying to distract me and I'm grateful for it. It's working. He's very distracting.

His voice, I mean.

He finally turns into a lot and I haven't released my grip on the door handle. He parks and I release a harsh breath.

We step out towards a beige storefront with a bright blue door. I've listened to his music. I know where we are.

I look at him fondly, "You brought me to the Beachwood Café?"

He nods shyly and brings his hand up to rub the back of his neck, "You shared something important to you with me. I want to do the same."

I grasp his arm and give it a small squeeze. "Thank you, Harry. I've always wanted to come here. Thank you." I repeat and release his arm as we walk in.

The pattern of the floor makes me smile and I look up at him. "Canyon Moon was always one of my favorite songs of yours."

He gives a small laugh, "Oh, yeah?" We walk towards the desk and wait in line. It's pretty empty inside. We've been lucky today. "You're a fan, are you?"

"Well," I draw out. "I wouldn't say all that." I give a teasing smile with a shrug, "No, really, I wouldn't call myself a crazy fan, but I definitely do listen to your music. I like all kinds of music. And your music is one of the few that seems like it incorporates all sorts of styles into it. I really like that."

He smiles shyly at my compliment and gives a small thanks as the line moves up. We continue to talk and laugh with each other until it's our turn to order.

"Hi, Harry." The cashier smiles. "Usual today? Iced vanilla latte?"

Harry smiles and greets them in return, "Hey, Josh. Yeah, usual for me and then whatever you want." He looks to me, "It's on me."

"Oh, you don't have to do that-" I stop when he gives me a look. "Okay, um, thank you." I look to the cashier, "Could I get a small iced black coffee? Unsweetened, please." He nods and charges Harry.

I look up at him and I have to let out a laugh at his disturbed expression. "Black coffee? And unsweetened?"

"Hey, hey." I tell him as we walk towards a table in the back corner and sit across from each other. "Be nice. I like my coffee how I like my books, Harry Styles. Without judgement on my taste."

He laughs at that, "That's good reasoning. I think I'll use that someday."

Our coffees come and we take small sips as we talk. "You should try mine." Harry offers and slides his cup towards me. "It's got to be better than whatever you're drinking."

I tut at him. "I quite like my coffee like this."

His eyes show he still wants me to try it and he nudges his drink again. "You seem like you like to keep things a certain way. But we've both done something new today and I figure what's one more? Try the coffee."

I take the cup from him and hold it in my hands. "What new thing did you do today?" I ask. He leans back in his chair and gives me a small smile.

"I brought you here. I've never brought anybody with me here before." I feel my cheeks heat and my lips lift at his admission, so I bring the cup to my face to hide my smile. I wrap my lips around the straw and my eyes don't stray from his as I take a sip.

The cool and unfamiliar taste goes down my throat and I can't help the moan that escapes my lips. Harry's eyes are dilated but he's smiling now. "Told you. It's good, right?"

"Really good." I hand his cup back to him and he puts his hands up. "You can have the rest if you'd like."

I smile at him, "I'll just remember to get my own next time." I push it back to him. "Thank you."

"Next time, huh? How are you sure I want to bring you back here?" He says with a teasing tone.

"Because you can't stay away from me" I joke.

He only shrugs, "That's true."

My lips lift into another smile and I raise my coffee to my lips, the bitterness much more noticeable now.

Soft music plays lowly as we talk for hours about the most random things. I don't think I've ever been this comfortable with someone in my life.

We're just finishing our coffees and the sun is going down when Harry asks, "Oh, by the way. I almost forgot to ask." He sits up in his chair and leans forward. "What's the word for today?"

I smile and copy his movement, our bodies closer. "Intrepid." He nods at me. "It means fearless or adventurous." I shrug my shoulders, "I think it fits. I'd like to think I've been pretty fearless today. More fearless than I've been in a while, at least."

Harry smiles, "Intrepid." He nods again, "Definitely fits."

We give goofy smiles to each other and clink our empty cups together in cheers.

Harry speaks again, "Do you have any other family members?" My smile falters slightly. "Sorry for bringing it up again. It's just that you only mentioned your friend, Seb, so I was curious. Sorry. You don't have to answer."

I bring my lips back up into a smile. "No, it's okay. Intrepid, remember?" Harry smiles with a nod.

"Um, I have family. A lot, actually. It's just- After the accident, I sort of...cut everyone off." I shake my head. "It wasn't intentional. I just isolated myself and after a while, they stopped trying to contact me. I can't blame them. I wasn't in a good place. I'm still not."

I look into Harry's eyes. Beautiful. "But, I'm getting there." My cheeks heat. "I'm getting there." I nod as I repeat myself.

The smile he responded with shined as bright as the sun that had just finished setting.

And I'd never wanted to bask in the sunlight more.
