《Leather Jacket Girl (girlxgirl)》Chapter Forty-Four

I woke up the next day curled up in Courtney's arms. It was the day to hand in our art project and I hadn't realised that until my phone began to buzz with a reminder that I had set myself.

I felt myself gasp.

"It's art project day!" I said.

"What?" Courtney mumbled, as her arms tightened around me.

"Courtney, it's art project day. The two of us have to go," I said.

Courtney grumbled.

"Can't the two of us just stay here forever?" she asked me.

I released a soft laugh.

"You know we can't do that, Courtney. Besides, you've worked so hard on this project. Let's go," I told her.

Courtney got changed into the spare clothes that she had brought with her, while I got ready, too.

Once the both of us were all ready, it was time to get going to school.

I called out to my family to let them know I was off for the day and my mother quickly wished me luck with my art project.

Courtney and I made our way out to her car and she sighed in frustration, as soon as the engine started up.

"Are you okay? What's going on?" I asked her.

Courtney simply pinched the bridge of her nose in response to my question. It became clear that something was bothering her.

"I've run out of fuel," she told me, "I mean, not totally but the two of us are going to have to stop off at a petrol station."

"It's no big deal, Courtney," I told her with a warmth to my voice.

Courtney looked towards me with an appreciative expression, then. Her jaw that had hardened seemed to unclench and she managed a small smile, too.

"Thank you, Phoebe," she said.

Courtney drove on, so that she could get her car some more petrol from the nearest petrol station.

When she was done, the two of us continued on to school.

"I'm really sorry, Phoebe. I'm going to get there a little later than expected," she told me. "I know that you depend on me sometimes and I'm going to get us there late on the day of the art project and I'm sorry."

"Hey, it's okay!" I told her.

Courtney sighed.

"I'm such an idiot. I should have filled up the tank before I left for your house. I was just so excited to see you that I guess that I...well, I forgot, to put it simply," she said.

"It's okay, honestly," I assured her, with a kind expression upon my face.

Once Courtney realised that I was being sincere, she relaxed a little.

Courtney drove on a little further until we reached the school.

The two of us practically leaped out of her car, so we could quickly make our way inside the school building and towards our art class.

Once we arrived, Emmy raised an eyebrow at me.

"Where have you been?" she asked me.

"I was pretty busy," I said.

"With Courtney?" Emmy asked.

"We're girlfriends now," Courtney said.

Emmy looked at me, then, for clarification.

"Yeah, we are," I said.

Emmy's eyes widened slightly but then she smiled.

"I'm happy for you," she said.

Her smile soon faded, though, and I couldn't help but notice that Emmy appeared to be a little nervous.

"Are you alright, Emmy?" I asked her.

"I guess I'm just a little anxious. It's art project day today. We're going to hand in our final project and I don't know if mine was good enough and-"

"Emmy, yours was amazing," Courtney said.

"She's right! I know how hard you worked on it," I told her, with a friendly smile.

Emmy seemed to appreciate the two of us for instilling her with more confidence.

Miss Mack soon entered the class, so she could take the register for the students' attendance.

Emmy turned to me after the two of us had answered the register.

"Are you okay?" she asked me, with a caring expression.

"I'm more than okay," I told her, as my eyes glanced towards Courtney for a moment.

"I'm glad that you've found someone who makes you happy. Lois has been so busy recently that the two of us have had hardly any time to talk to one another," she said. "It made me realise something, though. Since I've been spending so much time with Lois, I didn't spend enough time with you, Phoebe. You're my best friend and you know that I will always be here to look after you and care about you."

"Of course I know that, Emmy. You're my best friend and I will always be here for you," I whispered back to her.

A warmth filled Emmy's eyes at my kind words.

We soon turned our attention back to the front of the class, so we were able to listen to Miss Mack.

"I am very pleased with all of the work that I have received today!" she said quickly, which instantly caused me to relax in my seat. I knew that I had worked hard but that hadn't stopped me from being slightly worried about everything.

"I knew she would like mine," Elijah whispered to the us, which caused Emmy to chuckle gently.

"You will know your grades in a few weeks but for now I believe that you all deserve to be able to leave class early. This is a rare occasion, of course, but I really am proud of all of you," Miss Mack said.

I felt my heart warm at her kind words.

Not long after that, Emmy, Courtney and I left the classroom.

"I can't believe that project is done. I can't wait until we start our new project," Emmy told us. She had always had this thirst for knowledge that I admired. It inspired me to want to work harder in college, too. I knew that one day Emmy would head off to university and I had no doubts that she would be amazing.

"Yeah! It'll be fun," I said.

"Most definitely," she replied.

The three of us soon made our way to the cafeteria, so we could celebrate finally finishing our art project.
