《The Alpha Instinct》Chapter Twenty-One: Behind Enemy Lines

"I can't believe I let you guys talk me into this suicide mission—" Leo whined from behind us as he dragged his steps, "You are going to get us all killed. Let's take on pure bloods? Yeah there is no way this could possibly go wrong..." His voice dripped with sarcasm as he continued to mumble to himself.

Libra let out a low growl of annoyance, "Shut your mouth or you wont have to worry about the pure bloods cause I'll kill you myself." I had to cover my laugh with a cough. Leo spoke under his breath but didn't tempt his sisters anger any further. I kept my attention on Bunny and Marshall who were walking quietly in front. Bunny was focusing her attention completely on tracking Silver's scent which I guess weakened her other senses she'd explained when I asked for her help in getting us to Silver. Knowing this Marshall huddled close to her on full alert to the world around us searching for any signs of threats.

"How will we know when we've hit their territory?" Leo asked after a couple of silent minutes.

"We've been on their territory for past three miles..." Bunny replies without a pause. I feel my body tense at her statement, "How do you know that?"

"I can smell them around—I mean they smell different but at the same time similar to Silver." She stops moving and lifts her face towards the sky, breathing in deeply. I followed her lead and closed my eyes as I breathed in the scents around me. I could smell Silver now, much stronger then before but I could also smell other wolves like she'd said. I opened my eyes feeling the need to be more aware of my surroundings. I had been distracted—correction I'd been continually distracted since Silver left making me and everyone else any easy target.

"I think it would be best if we keep moving then don't you guys. I mean I don't want to be around if one of them wanders by..." Leo suggests to the group sounding anxious. Libra spins to look at her brother sending him a chilling look and he quickly shut his mouth.

"Give me a minute to focus on Silvers—" Bunny stopped talking and her body stiffened, "They know we're here."

Marshall looked towards me with a grim expression as if to ask me what I wanted to do. There was only two options and that was stay and fight or run. I wasn't one for backing down but I had no idea what it would be like to fight a pure blood and I wasn't willing to risk Silvers pack over it.

"Bunny, take Libra and Leo with you—Run on ahead and when you get far enough away, go high—" I point up toward a tree to let them know I wanted them to climb and hide up in the trees to get there scents up off the ground. Marshall gave me a dark look obviously not liking the idea of parting with Bunny but he wasn't arguing meaning he saw the necessity.

"Marshall and I will lead them away before we circle back around. If we're not back within the hour then I want you guys to turn back the way we came and return to Noah's pack." I don't want to risk them getting hurt or caught. Marshall moved towards Bunny pulling her into his arms, "You know that I love you very much, right?"

She nodded her head before shoving it into the safety of his chest, wrapping her fragile looking arms tightly around him. They held each for a moment before she pulled back and grabbed his face between her hands, "You remember your promise to me right?" I watch Marshall's eyes darken at her words and he gave her a silent nod. She pressed up on her tip toes and gave him a kiss before pulling away from him completely, "Then I expect to see you again soon."

I was curious about what type of promise he had made to his little mate but I imagined that was a secret between the two of them. Bunny looked toward Libra and Leo, "Come on guys—" She takes off to the left clearly she could smell that was the safest path. Libra snatched a hold of her brothers hand and pulled him behind her as they chased Bunny into the trees.

Marshall was standing staring off into the tree's where his mate had disappeared. I approached him, laying a hand on his shoulder, "Don't worry Marshall. She is stronger than she looks—"

He peered over at me with a small smirk of pride on his lips, "I know."

"So how about a friendly game of tag?" I suggest as my wolf rises towards the surface at the knowledge of our current threat. Marshall's smirk turns into a deadly grin, "Used to be one of my favorite games"

I released my hold on his shoulder throwing on last look toward where the others had run off and then ran in the opposite direction. Marshall followed my lead and within in minutes we were running through the trees as quick as we could in our human forms. I could sense that we were being hunted by the way the hairs on the back of my neck stood on end. Marshall must have had the same feeling because his eyes scanned the tree line around us suspiciously.

A giant wolf launched out in front of us cutting off our path. I gritted my teeth as I tried to slow myself down to keep from colliding with it head on. Marshall let out a fierce growl before he shifted into his wolf. I felt my mouth drop open in surprise as he shook out his brilliant coat of reds and browns. He stood even bigger than our enemy and the power flowing off of him wasn't one of a Beta but of an alpha which shocked me even more. How was it possible that in his human form I could never pick up on this but now that he had shifted his aura was completely different?

During my distraction I was caught off guard as another wolf barreled through the trees and knocked into me. My back slammed into a tree with a loud crack. I winced as the pain radiated through my bones and I tried to right myself. My eyes connected with the wolf that had attacked me, it's lips pulled back in a violent looking snarl as it stalked towards me.

I narrowed my eyes as the wolf as it brought it's muzzle close to my face to intimidate me. I pushed back into the tree before I pulled back my arm and punched the thing in it face with a mean right hook. Its head snapped to the side with a powerful yelp of surprise at my sudden attack. I slipped through the opening I had created and twisted my body landing a solid kick to its side. The wolf stumbled sideways tripping over itself and falling to the ground.

I turn my face to see that Marshall was locked into a heated battle with the other interloper. My wolf scratched under my skin wanting to be released but I held back because I was confident I could take this wolf without shifting. The wolf pulled itself back up off the ground with a growl, shaking its head and flattening its ears. Compared to other wolves this one was much larger and from the tensing of it's muscles it was considerably stronger, luckily I wasn't some average wolf—I was an alpha.

It began to circle me as if it was looking for my weaknesses. I kept my steps slow and sure as I followed it's movements. I noticed its front legs shift forward before it snapped forward going for my legs with its razor sharp teeth. I leapt back barely avoiding the attack. The heel of my foot caught a rock as I moved, sending me stumbling back onto my butt. Taking advantage of my slip my attacker launched itself at me with its mouth open wide. I swore under my breath and put my hands up catching it at the last second.

My arms shook as I used all my strength to keep the jaws from snapping shut on my face. Its paws clawed at the ground beside me and I turned my face away from the hot breath of the beast over me. I pulled on my wolf with a growl of desperation and kicked up with my legs into its stomach as I pushed with my arms. I sent it flying over the top of me and into a tree nearby. I rolled over quickly and popped back up onto my feet, breathing heavily.

"Enough!" A deep voice called out. I spun around quickly to see Barrett and more than enough back up. Beside Barrett is a tall man with familiar eyes, a shade of green that almost makes them look like they glow. I grit my teeth as the men surround Marshall and I. Marshall is still in his wolf form and looking more than a little blood thirsty. Barrett looks towards Marshall with raised eyebrows, "What the—Shift!" He commands in an angry tone. Marshall lowers his head and lets out a threatening growl. I look towards Marshall, "It's okay—Shift..." I say in a softer tone. He looks towards me before shifting back into his human form.

I can see that he's got a couple of minor wounds on his body and a bite on his thigh that looks like it could use a little attention. Barrett's eyes double in size, "You?" he seems more than shocked at the realization that Marshall turned out to be an alpha as well. Quickly though he wipes the shock away and glares at us.

"You are trespassing on pack lands." Barrett growls, "You and your kind aren't welcome here—turn back now or you will forced to face the monarch himself."

"Well, we did come all this way...it would be a shame not to stop in and see this great wolf king for ourselves. Wouldn't you agree?" I question as I glance in Marshall's direction. His eyes shift to me in slight confusion but he nods his head in agreement.

Barretts' green eyed companion lets out a deep chuckle, "You must be the female that my brothers are so taken with..." He moves forward into the circle. He approaches me with a look of appraisal, "I mean I can see why. You are quite beautiful and proud..."

I shiver with disgust when his gaze meets mine and I can see desire burning in his eyes. He starts to circle me, "A female alpha is unheard of—" I feel fingers slide across my back touching the tips of my hair. I pull forward and glance over my shoulder with a warning growl. A cocky smirk plays on his lips as he holds up his hands in mock surrender. Marshall is watching him with a dark look in his eyes as if waiting for him to slip up so he can attack him.

"Let me guess—You've come here for my baby brother?" He questioned as he came to stand in front of me. I looked up at him through narrowed eyes but didn't respond. He moved in closer to me, "Here's the thing sweetheart—whatever you were to him—its long over now. My father would never allow him to be with someone of your status no matter how rare or beautiful you might be."

"The best you could hope for is that my father doesn't kill you and your friends on the spot or that one of my brothers is given the chance to take you as his pet..." He reaches out and grabs a piece of my hair between his fingers, "Personally I would love to take you as my pet—"

My body was trembling with my pent up aggression. I kept seeing Kellan's face flash through my mind, sending me spiraling into dark thoughts. My hand was moving before I could process the action. I grabbed a whole of his wrist in a tight grip, "I'm no one's pet!" I twist his arm causing him to spin around so that his back is facing me. I force his arm up into his shoulder blades and kick out with my leg, sending him to his knees.

The crowd around us is snarling and growling at the sight. Barrett is yelling at me to release Silver's brother but I block him out. Instead I lean forward twisting his arm a bit more, "Know this pretty boy. The last person that though to try and take me as his pet—I ripped out his throat with my teeth. I helped bring his army of rogues to it's knees. I'm not above killing a royal prick with superiority complex..."

"Release Constantine right now or I will have your friends killed. Starting with the small one..." Barrett growled threateningly. I flipped my gaze up, my lip pulled back in a snarl. I heard the sound of struggling only to see a couple of men pulling Bunny forward. Marshall let out a vicious roar and I saw his body begin to shift at the sight of his mate in the hands of our enemies. My eyes roamed over the crowd quickly to see the Libra and Leo were standing near the back with warring looks.

I released a frustrated growl before I let go of Constantine. He rose up from the ground with a growl of his own before he spun quickly towards me. I didn't have time to react before his fist collided with the side of my face. I stumble to side from the force.

"Grace!" Bunny shouted over the ringing in my ears.

A big hand wrapped around my throat and yanked me up in the air. I clawed at the hand as it chocked the air from my lungs. Constantine was staring at me with a sadistic grin on his lips, "I'm going to enjoy breaking my brothers bitch, maybe I'll make him watch as I do it..."

Black spots began to dance across my vision, "When—I—get—free..." I gasp out the words, "I'm going—to—ask—for—your—head..." My body was starting to feel numb, "And—he'll bring—it—to—me..."

"Take them to the dungeon!" I heard Barrett yell out followed by growls. I heard my wolf let out a snarling in my mind as my body was dropped to the ground like lead. Constantine stood over me like a looming shadow, "Maybe if you're a good girl I'll come visit you..." I clenched my hand as the darkness claimed me.
