《Forbidden | Carol Danvers》Chapter 27: Vulnerable

Of course, Carol decided to be extra, never missing an opportunity to make a good joke. So she climbed on the railing on one of the overhead corridors in a large room, where she waited for Yon and his team to find us. I just rolled my eyes at her theatrics and waited down below, on the ground, in case they made their entrance there.
Yon and one Kree soldier came through the door on the ground floor first, seeing me standing there, but looking at Carol who held the box with the Tesseract -or so they thought. Att-Lass and beard-guy emerged from her right on the bridge, while Minn-Erva and some more Kree soldiers boxed her in from the left. It made me feel very uneasy. She was out there in the open, multiple weapons pointed at her, but she didn't seem to feel the same way.
Holding the box up and shaking it a bit, she casually asked, 'Hey guys. Arm-wrestle for the Tesseract?' She even swung her legs back and forth in the air, like a child on a swing, before she jumped off onto the bridge, knowing there was going to be a fight.
Yon-Rogg didn't think it was funny either. 'I used to find you amusing.' Wow, Yon who thought somebody was amusing? But his smile disappeared slowly and he readied his weapons, causing everyone to do the same. 'Let's put an end to this!'
Carol looked back and forth between Minn-Erva on her left and Beard on her right, seeing the man charge for her, she punched in the floor of the bridge in a display of light, making it crumble and break down. Everyone on the bridge fell down with it, except Korath and Minn-Erva, who managed to hold on. I saw what she was planning on doing just in time to jump out of the way, dodging the metal falling down with much noise.
Now everyone was on the same level, something that made me more at ease. I could protect her better this way, although I had a feeling she didn't really need my help. Her glowing body was mesmerizing to look at, to say the least, but I couldn't get distracted now.
Everyone was temporarily trapped under the debris of the bridge, so I swiftly made my way over to her. We were better fighters together than apart and I knew she would have my back. We gave each other a quick nod as a confirmation we were both ready for this and turned our eyes back to the Kree around us, everyone beginning to get away from under the rubble.
Beard ran for the box that had found its way to the middle of the floor but Carol blasted him before he could get his hands on it. I took out another Kree, before my eye fell on Minn-Erva who had emerged on the bridge again, pointing her gun at Carol. Two soldiers dropped down from there also, which the blonde immediately took care off and had to dodge a shot from the blue woman at the top.
Angry, I conjured up some fire and blasted it her way, but she was smart and dropped down too before I could get a good hit on her. Carol was fighting Korath behind me, while I charged for the blue sniper, ready to kick her ass for shooting me. I disarmed her and she quickly grabbed another gun from the ground, seeing it was a fake one made for children, I paused and stared at her. 'I used to think you were cool.'

She looked unimpressed and said dryly, 'Well, I never liked you' and shot her 'gun'.
The soft bullet hit my head and I took this time to blast her backwards, this time not missing. She hit the wall loudly, a very satisfying sound.
'Incoming!' A battle cry made me turn around and see how the pinball machine was smashed by Beard onto my girlfriend who was lying on the ground. My heart sunk for a second, before a big blast came through the machine and hit the man in the chest.
She threw the thing off her and was just standing on her feet again before Att-Lass ran into her, tackling her to the ground. I wanted to help her when he put his gun to her back (dick move by the way, shooting someone in the back) but I was too occupied trying to keep two Kree off my ass that really wanted to kill me. I sighed in relief when she blasted them both backwards, making him fall of from the speed.
My both enemies were just down when I heard her yell 'Duck!' Two big photon blasts flew right over my head, putting anyone down who didn't duck in time. Which was practically everyone. She seemed shocked by the power she held, just like me, sharing an impressed look while preparing for another fight. They wouldn't stay down long.
While Carol picked up the lunchbox she had lost in the fight, rubble behind her suddenly began to fly. It was no surprise when Yon stood up underneath it, freeing himself with his gravity gun. I shot some fire at him, but the anti-gravity around him did weird things with my powers, bouncing off the wall and coming back to me. I basically hit myself with my own powers. I had to admit, it was kind of embarrassing.
While I was down, he turned to the other woman, picking her up and throwing her into a machine. It looked very painful. But she got up quickly, just like me, and we both ran for him.
We should have known better, I know. But my powers were useless against his gravity gun so the only way for me to beat him was hand-to-hand, old school.
Yon just did the same thing he did before, picking both of us up and pinning us against the wall with lots of metal and debris covering our bodies. I felt like a doll on display, helplessly hanging there. There was no way for me to get out, but Carol did, powering up her body and pushing the force outwards. All the metal fell to the ground at once. However, this also caused the handle of the lunchbox to break and it fell open on the ground. Revealing the lack of powersource inside.
Yon-Rogg gritted his teeth, not happy to have wasted time fighting us when we didn't have the Tesseract. 'Nice diversion.'
'I could've swore I put it in there', Carol said smugly. Yon threw more rubble at her head before running away, probably to find the others. Because he left and took his gun with him, I was released, falling to the ground rougly.
We ran after him instantly, knowing he was going to have no trouble killing our friends to get what he wanted. They needed our help. But they had to wait a little longer because the other Kree had woken up from being knocked unconscious and attacked Carol again. Why they were mostly after her, I don't know. Probably because they thought she was more powerful or maybe I just wasn't worth it, but I felt ignored.

So while she fought Korath, I took Beard, who put up quite a good fight for such a kind-looking man. At one point, I just threw him into a dangerous looking, turning machine and punched him when he came back around. This seemed to finally keep him down. 'Come on!', Carol yelled at me while she ran out the room too, trying to find Yon.
We eventually did, after a little running around. Because we saw the Kree ship in pieces at the platform, they had to have found another way out in the form of an escape pod. We were proven to be correct when we turned a corner and saw Yon jumping in one, the top closing. Carol jumped on it, ready to blast it to pieces, but the man dropped down quickly, making her lose her footing and fall out the big ship too, into space.
I wasted no time jumping out, following her, knowing I could fly, even in space. She held on to Yon's pod tightly, her helmet over her face to give her the oxygen she needed. I quickly activated my own, also because it enabled me to talk to her over the comms. She saw me not far behind her. 'Minn-Erva is going after the plane, can you take her out?', her voice immediately yelled in my ear.
'What about you?', I asked worryingly. We had no idea if she was able to fly or anything if she fell down.
'I'll be fine, go!' She had trouble climbing on the pod, but I knew it was no use arguing with her once she had her mind set on something. So I reluctantly slowed down, letting her go and charged for the blue woman in the other pod, who tailed the plane all the Skrulls were in.
Maria did her best to maneuver the plane around and away from the Kree's guns, but it wasn't as agile as the pod. When I had almost reached the sniper, she fired backwards, something this pod could apparently do, and hit me in my stomach. However, it didn't do much to me, only blew the air out of my lungs for a second and falling down a few feet.
On the other side of the comms, I could still hear breathing, letting me know Carol was still alive. I tried my best not to think about the danger she was in, I had my own mission, but it was hard, not knowing what was going on with her and Yon.
Before I could catch up with Minn-Erva again, one of her shots hit the right wing of Maria's plane, making it wobble. She was a good pilot however, and could fly with one damaged wing if she needed to, but it still pissed me off.
Speeding up, I made sure to stay out of range this time and fired my own blasts at the woman. When this didn't do anything, I used my least favorite element to break the edges of the walls of the canyon we were racing through, aiming the chucks of rock at the pod.
This finally seemed to work, one big ball of stone-hard ground crushing the pod and sending her down to the ground. It turned over and over in the sky, it was nauseating to look at. Making sure she was really out of the game, I flew down, landing beside the wreckage.
I hated hurting people, even someone like Minn-Erva, but the Skrulls were important and I don't know if Carol would still look at me if I let something happen to her friend. I carefully searched through the wreckage, looking for any sign of life. But it was clear she was dead when I found her body. It was a horrible sight. Nobody deserves to die like this, not even lying, backstabbing Kree.
I don't know what I was aiming for when I fought her. Killing her or just bringing her down, but there was no way to go back in time, so I paid my respects to her and walked away. Even though she tried to kill us, she deserved a proper send-off.
Suddenly, I heard more shooting. My eyes followed the sound and landed on another pod tailing Maria. Yon-Rogg. I groaned, just when I thought I was done... I thought Carol was taking care of him? But just when I was ready to take off again, something flew up from the ground so fast it was almost a blur, and hit Yon's wing to pieces.
It became clear what, or rather who, it was when I heard a yell of excitement in my ear. I couldn't help but laugh. It was like a child on a rollercoaster, having the time of her life. 'You havin' fun?'
'Yes!', the excitement and joy shining through. What a weirdo.
Yon's pod hit ground, hard. Carol wanted to go after him, but another noise came from behind her, distracting her. The familiar sound of ships exiting a jump-point. My eyes widened when four huge Accusers' ships entered Earth's atmosphere. How the hell are we going to make them leave? There were just two of us, against a whole army of Kree and weapons.
'Oh, we are so screwed', I breathed. More to myself than the woman in the sky, but she heard me anyway.
Instead of a confirmation, I got a determined no. 'No, we're not.' Oh, no, she had another plan that probably involved her doing something stupid.
A dozen warheads fired from the ships, ready to bomb the planet. I felt powerless now. There was no way we could take all those out. But Carol didn't feel the same way, flying up to meet the bombs, very confident in her own strength.
For me, it was a horrible sight. One small woman who had just gained all her power, against a whole army of missiles able to destroy planets. I feared for her life and that shone through in my voice when I spoke worried. 'What are you doing?'
'Watch Yon-Rogg, I got this!' I tore my eyes away from the sky, knowing I couldn't convince her otherwise and took off myself, scanning the desert for the Kree man.
He had already gotten out, less hurt than I hoped he would be, and stared at the sky himself. Seeing a bright light speed towards the warhead and stopping it. A strained grunt sounded in my ear, momentarily distracting me. But with another yell, she turned the weapon around, throwing it back towards the ships. It collided with the other missiles, creating a chain-reaction of explosions, taking them all out. To say I was proud and impressed would be an understatement.
Knowing now she could handle herself, I turned back to the man below me, landing a few feet away. He wasn't going to go down without a fight and he was not easy to kill, but his pride got the best of him sometimes, so I wasn't without chances.
My mask retracted and just when I was about to say something, another joyful yell reached my ears. Even though we were fighting a war, she was having the time of her life with her new powers. A small smile came on my face, but Yon saw it anyway. Not that I cared anymore. I had never cared what he thought of me.
'I used to think the world of you, back when we were still friends, but now you have proven what I always suspected. A weak, useless Ateran that never belonged on Hala in the first place.' He could say whatever he wanted, but his words meant nothing to me. I already knew how he thought of me.
More crashes followed in my ear, letting me know that Carol's warpath was still working out okay. Yon could see I was concentrated on the sounds in my ear and his eyes widened when he looked up at the Accusers' ships. One was completely destroyed, curtesy of one powerful woman. My head shook in disbelief at the power she now held and the admiration shone in my eyes.
When I turned back to Yon, I crossed my arms over my chest and raised an eyebrow, silently asking what he was going to do now. But his smug face told me he had a plan and it was not going to be nice.
'This was all she ever meant to me, to us. Just a weapon for the Kree to use.' Oh, man, I knew he was going to play the girlfriend-card. He knew it was the only way he could get to me. My fists clenched in anger, as did my jaw. I was determined not to give him the reaction he was looking for, but if he kept going like this, I knew he would.
'It's a shame she never learned to control those powers, too emotional.'
I was trembling now. Not from fear, from anger. I had always suspected he thought of her like that, but hearing the words directly come out his mouth was another thing entirely.
'I was happy she came to my team, but she screwed up so many times that I honestly thought about getting rid of her. She is nothing but trouble.'
My feet walked towards him on their own. Getting up in his face, I whispered a warning, daring him to continue. 'Shut. up.'
He wasn't impressed and a knowing smile formed on his face. I had dropped my facade and let him know he had gotten through to me. 'Ah, did I hit a nerve? You know, you two fit together perfectly. Both naive outsiders, too blind to see the lies, taken from your homes by the Kree and only good as weapons. We should have just let you both die, would have spared me the trouble.'
It was quiet for a single breath before I lunged at him. He had seen it coming, but not to this extent. I think he just thought I would hit him or something, not try to kill him by squeezing his throat shut and cutting off his air supply.
He never stopped laughing however, too happy he had gotten me to finally break. His hands lay useless by his sides, not even trying to throw me off of him. 'Nobody speaks of her that way, especially you. You are a sick, egotistical liar! I hate you! I hate you!'
My brain somewhere acknowledged the gust of wind and the footsteps, but I was too focused on Yon's reddening face. He was laughing manically between coughs, trying to get some oxygen in his lungs.
Strong arms suddenly wrapped around my chest from behind, trying to pry me off him. I didn't register who it was, I only saw red, too occupied with killing the man below me. The arms stopped trying to lift me, when the person saw that it was no use. 'Yala, let him go. He is not worth it.' A whisper came from next to my ear, from the only person who could break through right now.
My hands loosened around the Kree's throat, but I didn't let go completely. 'Yala', the voice said again.
Now I did give in, releasing my grip on his neck and dropping my arms, Carol plucked me off him, putting me on my feet a little away from Yon, who started coughing furiously.
I was so tired. Tired of everything. Maybe that is why I started crying, the anger leaving me and being left with nothing but emptiness. 'I'm sorry. I'm sorry.' I didn't dare look up at her face, too afraid she was disappointed in me trying to kill him.
But I should have known this woman was uncapable of disappointment or anger towards me. 'It's okay, I get it', she said softly, 'But do you mind if I do the ass-kicking now? Maybe a little less violent?' Her voice turned teasing at the end, trying to make me feel better, which kind of worked, because a small smile came on my face.
I nodded, finally meeting her eyes which still shone for me. 'Alright. Just sit tight.' I nodded again and she released my hands from where she had held them, knowing it would calm me down.
Yon had watched our interaction with disgust on his face that didn't leave when Carol turned to him, ready to give him a piece of her own mind.

He is the hail mary or kitchen sink of the universe and it will be up to him to adapt to his new world and become strong enough to survive and to save the universe. ********* Author's Note ********* This is my first published book so feedback would be appreciated. A couple of caveats. First this story is about the details, if you don't enjoy reading and finding the easter eggs or just like to speed read through the chapters you will probably not enjoy it. Second for those that do not like the Harem tag I just want to state that this is going to be a matriarchal society and the women will outnumber the men 5-1. That being the case and because of the culture that I imagine would arise from this I felt it fair to put that tag out there. However, the main character isn't going to be picking up women left and right. This is not a typical harem story. Image was googled so I have no rights to it
