《Forbidden | Carol Danvers》Chapter 18: Never Be The Same

After my tears had finally stopped, it was time to talk to Yon-Rogg again. With all this new information we had found, it was time to confront him and see if he knew anything or not.

Vers had seen a phone in the hallway, pressed in a little corner, so she pulled out the equipment from the phone at the Blockbuster and plugged it in. After a little wiggling and messing with the cords, the phone connected. I would have to ask her how she knew how to do that, programming the phone so it reached galaxies lightyears away, but that was something for later.

Holding the thing to her ear, she didn't even say hello when Yon was contacted. Just got whatever she wanted to say off her chest immediately, no beating around the bush. 'I know Lawson was Kree. She was here on C-53 and died in a plane crash. Do you know anything about this?'

Man, I wish I could see his face right now. I would know immediately if he were lying.

'I just discovered a mission report sent from C-53.' Sure, he just discovered it. What a big coincedence. 'There is only so much I am cleared to tell you, Vers, but-' There was some rustling, like he was deciding whether to tell us anything. 'Lawson was an undercover Kree operative named Mar-Vell. She was working on a unique energy core. Experimenting with tech that apparently could help us win the war.' Always that damn war. It was everything the Kree cared about, even now. Even when one of their own apparently died fighting for the cause.

Vers had tears in her eyes ever since she heard his voice. She tried to hide it well, but the shock of finding out she had a life here and had lost the person she admired most in her life at the same time, was really hard on her. So taking her free hand in my own, I gave it a little squeeze.

'Does it say anything about me?' Her eyes looked into my own as she talked to Yon, maybe to find support in them, I don't know.

'Anything about you?', the man on the other side of the line asked confused. 'No of course not. Why would it?' The words came out a little too fast for my liking and my gut feeling told me he was lying. But without seeing his face, there was no way to be certain.

'I found evidence that I had a life here.' The words came out slowly, as if she had to concentrate on making them sound normal and not broken. But even though her voice may sound normal to Yon, her whole body told me something different. She had no idea about anything anymore.

'On C-53?' I rolled my eyes when he said that. No on Mars, on C-53 where else? He was stalling, deciding what to say.

'Mar-Vell is who I see when I visit the Supreme Intelligence. I knew her. And I knew her as Lawson.' Her voice started out vulnerable, but became harder at the end of her sentence, as if she was angry that he didn't believe her. She blinked furiously, trying to keep the tears from falling out.

'This sounds like Skrull simulation Vers', Yon tried to reason with her. If he knew the truth about her past, it would be logical to try to get her to change her mind so she wouldn't find out the truth. His words sounded like he wanted them to push them in her head, forcing her to believe them.

But Vers knew when she was being manipulated and got even more angry that he didn't listen to her. 'No it's not! Because I remember, I was here.' She sounded so sure and her words were really steady now, any sign of sadness lost.

'Stop! Remember your training. Know your enemy. It could be you. Do not let your emotions override your judgment.' Now it seemed he finally got through to her, because she closed her eyes, took in a deep breath and nodded her head, trying to calm herself down. Even if she had every right to be mad, Yon was right. We couldn't let our emotions override our objective view on this. We had to look at this calmly.

'We're nearing the jump-point. Leave your beacon on so I can find you. We'll get to the bottom of this Vers. Together.' Yon finally sounded calm again, clearly pleased he got through to her and put extra emphasis on the last word. He wanted to do this together so he could control what she saw en heard.

But the woman in front of me didn't seem impressed. I don't know if she thought he lied or she just didn't trust him, but her answer didn't sound convincing and neither looked her face. 'Okay.'

Hanging the phone back in its holder, she ended the call. Thinking for a second, she turned her eyes to mine. 'He is hiding something.'

'Absolutely. And we are going to find out what it is. Together.' I used the same words as Yon, but these had a totally different meaning to them. Yon wanted Vers to wait for him so she wouldn't find anything he didn't want her to find. But my word meant a promise to her, that I would be with her every step along the way.

She smiled at me thankfully and her eyes said more than her words could ever express. I didn't need her to say anything, I knew she was thankful I was here.

'Let's get out of here, shall we?' I offered. This place had brought us nothing but misery, so I would feel better if we were out of here.

I walked past the elevator to the stairs, expecting a little jab about it, but Vers was too lost in her thoughts to even notice. We went down, hoping to find a way out there somewhere, but were just one stair down when suddenly voices sounded from above.

'Fury's colluding with the targets.' Targets? Probably me and Vers. Looking over to where she had stopped next to me, a pissed and confused expression was on her face. Fury hadn't been paging with his mom, but with SHIELD. The people above us were SHIELD Agents.

'Then why did he call us in?' I knew that voice, it was the short suit-guy from the Blockbuster, Fury's colleague.

'All I know is that we take him in too. Dead or alive', his partner answered. Dead or alive? That is a little overdone. Fury was a good guy and now because he had been helping us, he might end up dead? Vers' eyes showed the same emotion and I knew her too well to know she wouldn't just walk away now.

'Dead or alive?' Suit-guy asked indignantly. It was obvious he liked his partner and didn't want him to end up dead. They walked through the doors, going to the sublevel we just left, where Fury probably still was.

Like I expected, Vers sighed, let out a little annoyed grunt and turned around, back up the stairs. There was that amazing personality again. Even though Fury had screwed us over, she couldn't let him die.

Running around the fifth sublevel, we hoped he would still be here. If he wasn't, our chances of keeping him out of SHIELD hands were getting a lot smaller. Luckily, we were guided by the sound of grunts, people crashing into things and just overall fighting. Turning the corner to the records room we had just come out of, my gaze fell on Fury who lay on his back on the ground, a tall man towering over him, about to deliver the final blow.

Before I could react, Vers had already blasted him away from Fury, making him fly away at least thirty feet. Fury turned his head backwards slowly, the blood on his forehead dripping down. I helped him up quickly, the man wouldn't be down for long, while Vers blasted a hole in the ceiling we could climb through.

'You called them in?!', she yelled at Fury while we were running away, trying to find a way out.

'My bad.' The man puffed and groaned with every step he took, injured from the fight and not in good shape in general. I guess sitting behind a desk for six years did that to your stamina.

Taking to the stairs again, this time we made our way up, back to the car we came in. But what we didn't expect was to run into suit-guy standing there with his gun held up. Vers stopped running so abruptly that I almost ran into her and lit up her fist, holding it in a threatening way. I knew she wouldn't hesitate to blast him if it came to it, but also knew she didn't like hurting people if she didn't have to.

The man with the gun looked at Fury. He seemed to be in a conflict with himself, not knowing whether he should be loyal to SHIELD or to his trusted colleague.

After a long wait, he dropped his gun slowly and Vers extinguished her fist, making the orange glow disappear. I was still mesmerized by it, no matter how often I had seen it and knew how much they could hurt.

She had lost control a couple of times the first few weeks I had trained her and again sometimes when our make-out sessions got a little heated. Literally.

'Coulson, you have eyes on them?', a female shouted from further up the stairs. So the man's name was Coulson. Odd name, but I'll take it.

'They're not down here. Let's try up there.' His eyes still locked with Fury's when he talked.

I was already through the door, so I couldn't see Fury's face, but had a feeling he was making a proud face at his friend.

Traveling further through the building, we busted through a double door, Fury closing it quickly behind us. Vers grabbed a pipe and bended it around the handles, making it a little harder for whoever came after us to break through. I would have welded it close with some fire, but Fury was still standing in front of it, peeking through the gap between the doors.

Vers held her hand up, but he was too distracted to see it, so I slapped his arm once to alert him. Turning around to me, I gestured with my head to Vers' hand. 'What?!'

'Your communicator. You obviously can't be trusted with it.'

He didn't even look when he slapped his pager in her hand, both of them ignoring the pounding of agents against the door.

Like I had expected, the pipe didn't hold long and five agents came running out, followed by the man that almost killed Fury a minute ago.

I peeked away from behind the crate we were all hiding behind and in the corner of my eye, Vers looked around the hanger, trying to find a way out. Suddenly, she tabbed mine and Fury's shoulder to grab our attention. A big plane stood a few feet away, its ramp door open. It was an easy escape, if we could figure out how to fly it. The agents were closing in fast and we were running out of options.

Running towards it, Vers jumped in the pilot seat immediately. I guessed it made sense. She was the real pilot here, I just knew how to fly space ships.

Sitting next to her, Fury made himself comfortable in the chair behind me, leaning forward to ask Vers if she even knew how to fly this thing.

'Uh... we'll see.' She looked around at the controls and all the buttons and switches, trying to jog her memory.

'That's a yes or no question.' Fury said to her with big eyes. I chuckled despite the fact we were dead if she couldn't get it to work. But I had a feeling she could.

Flipping switches left and right and even above her head, the plane came to life. The engines powering up and lights flashing in the cockpit. 'Yes', she answered Fury's question and I gave her a big smile, proud of her.

'That's what I am talking about!', he yelled when she pushed a lever and the plane got up from the ground. It shook a little, but what did you expect for her first flight in six years.

We ducked when agents started shooting at the front window, the bullets damaging the glass, but not going through it. It was bulletproof. Vers flew the plane away rapidly, out of the mountain.

The G-forces pushed us all back in our seats when the plane climbed speedily into the sky. Suddenly, a little meow came from behind us and Vers looked at me confused. Turning around, the ginger cat we had met earlier had somehow snuck on the plane and was pressed against a crate by the force.

I laughed when I saw him. He was cute, I had to admit. 'We got a stowaway', I said to the woman next to me.

'Hang on, Goose.' The little creature fell down on his four paws when she leveled the plane above the clouds and it came running for her, jumping on her lap.

I pouted when the little cat chose her instead of me and she laughed when she saw my face. 'You jealous?', she teased me.

'Yes, that's my spot', I said jealously, referring to her lap. She blushed a little but laughed anyway.

'Don't worry, it still is', she winked at me. But I still stole Goose from her, putting him down on my own lap and stroking his fur.

'Who's a good kitty huh? Yes, that's right. You're a good kitty.' The cat purred when I talked to him and ran my hand through his hairs. Vers stared at me weirdly. 'What?', I chuckled, not caring about my theatrics.

'Now I'm jealous', she said honestly.

'Why?' Trying to hide a smile and looking innocent as possible.

'He gets more attention than me.' She had the same pout on her face I had before and it looked adorable.

'Don't worry', I echoed her own words back to her, 'You will get my full attention later.' Wiggeling my eyebrows in a suggestive manner. She blushed furiously and hid her face behind her hair, only making me chuckle harder.

A little groan came from behind and to be honest, I had forgotten we were not alone in the plane. 'You guys are the worst', Fury said with a disgusted look on his face. He had heard way more than he wanted.

'Thank you', I said back casually, turning back around to the front window, staring into the blue sky and stroking Goose absentmindedly.

After a while, Vers' face had turned thoughtful again and I knew she had slipped back into the serious tone from the mission at hand. Pulling the photo out she had stolen from the files at Pegasus, she handed it to Fury. He didn't know about our little discovery yet, but he had to know if he wanted to be of any help. 'See anyone you know?'

He saw immediately what she meant, his eyebrows creasing when he saw the woman in the picture.

'Funny story... I arrived on Hala, near dead, no memory... That was six years ago', she told him.

Fury looked up from the image to Vers. 'So you think you're the pilot that went down with Dr Lawson?' He was a smart man and his brain had gotten what she meant immediately.

'I'm saying that the last person to see them alive can probably tell us.' Maria Rambeau. I had a feeling she and Vers were close and hoped she could tell us more.

'Maria Rambeau', Fury also concluded.

A little agreeing sound followed. 'Mmhmm. So how do we get to Louisiana?', a little smirk grew on her face, clearly enjoying flying the plane.

'Due East. Hang a right at Memphis.' Memphis probably being a city. 'Did you know about this?', Fury suddenly asked holding up the photo in front of me and bending around my chair so he could see me better.

I stared at the picture as I answered. 'No. I have been trying to figure out for two years where she came from before she arrived on Hala, but everything was a dead end. The Kree are very good at keeping secrets. When they don't want you to find anything, you never will.'

I was mad at myself that I never found out, that I didn't dig deep enough, didn't look hard enough. Vers' happiness was the most important thing in the galaxy to me and I couldn't do my part in increasing that. I felt like I had failed her, but I knew she didn't feel that way.

She appreciated everything I did for her, even if it lead to nothing. I had already helped her with so much, her powers, her fighting, making her feel at home. But I couldn't push down the feeling that I had failed her anyway.

Vers obviously saw it and took one hand of the controls, taking mine and holding it tightly. 'You did everything you could, Yala. This is not your fault', she whispered softly.

'They why does it feel like it?' There were those damn tears again. I didn't want to cry. I had cried too much already today.

'Because you couldn't tell me what had happened to me and you think that that somehow made me feel disappointed in you. I am sad that I never knew before today, but I know how hard you tried and did all you can to make me happy. Nobody has ever done that for me and I can never express to you how thankful I am for that.' Her low voice made me feel all kinds of emotions but mostly just admiration and disbelief that she was mine and mine alone.

'You don't have to. I know. Sometimes I just forget.' I whispered, trying to keep Fury from hearing our conversation.

'And I will always be here to remind you.' Her promise made my heart grow ten times in size and I wished we were alone right now so I could kiss her, but I was too aware of Fury listening and watching, even though he did his best to give us some privacy.

So I went for the three little words that held the most meaning in the world. 'I love you', I muttered.

'I love you too, idiot', she teased me with a smile on her face.

I fell asleep not long after that, curled up in the chair and listening to the quiet conversation she and Fury had.

Sweet little moment at the end :)

Little longer again, but I got where I wanted so...

Maria is up next, I love her.
