《Expectations》Chapter 46

I watch as raindrops stick to the window, falling and catching the light of a nearby lamppost outside. It's like weather knows this is my last day with Alex.
"Hey," Alex says, lightly nudging my foot with his under the white cloth table to gain my attention.
I tear my gaze from the window to look at his face in the soft glow of the restaurant. He looks tanner, and I can see the reflection of the flame of the candle on the table dancing in his eyes.
God he's beautiful. I try to soak up every detail to burn it to my memory.
"You ok? You've been acting a little off all day." He reaches over to grab my hand, rubbing the pad of his thumb over the back of it.
"Yeah, I'm good. Really good." I smile. It's not an utter lie.
Today was one of the best days I've ever had. Alex and I have been talking about exploring Amsterdam ever since he got me my flower here for my birthday.
It was a beautiful day with perfect weather. We got up early to ride bikes around town, stopped for lunch at a cute little cafe, and walked along the river hand in hand afterwards. Today has been absolutely perfect despite the gnawing feeling in the pit of my stomach, knowing I have to leave tomorrow. For the most part, I've been able to push down those gut wrenching feelings to let myself enjoy the little time I have left with him.
There's no show tonight so Alex insisted on taking me out to a nice dinner. He even bought me flowers, dressed up, the whole nine yards.
"Today has been perfect," he murmurs, reading my thoughts. Just then, a waiter comes by with the check. "I'm going to get this and how about you go call us a car," he suggests.
"Ok," I stand up from the table to go to the front lobby. Before I can pass the table, Alex grabs my wrist, pulling me back to him. He's still seated, head tipped back to look up at me, an expectant look on his face.
With a smile, I bend down and place a kiss to his lips, lingering there for a while, but apparently not long enough. When I pull back Alex grins, chasing my lips with his.
"I'll see you in the lobby," I whisper against his lips, leaving him with one more soft peck.
"Ok." He lets out an adorable huff, and there's slight pout on his face.
I giggle and go to the front of the restaurant to call a car to come pick us up. While waiting for Alex, I stare out the window, watching the rain patter against the streets. Its then that it all hits me. That these are my last few hours with the boy I've fallen in love with. My heart hurts and I feel sheer sadness and guilt course through me.

What am I doing?
A familiar pair of hands grab my hips, pulling me back to rest against their warm, firm chest, and I will myself to relax.
"What's wrong?" Alex murmurs, his lips brushing my ear, and a shiver runs down my spine.
"Huh?" I ask, feeling my nerves start to kick in.
"I know you, Joss." He kisses the side of my head, and my heart clinches. "You only fidget with your fingers if something's wrong or you're anxious." He reaches around to lace my restless fingers with his, resting our hands on my stomach. I didn't even realize I was fidgeting with my fingers.
I know you, his voice rings inside my head, and I realize just how much I love this boy. How much he knows me and cares about me. How much I let him in since the first time I met him eight months ago.
I release my hands from his and turn in his hold to look up into those ocean blue eyes I never expected to fall in love with. Taking his face in my hands, I stand up on my toes to lock my lips with his, taking him a bit by surprise. Nevertheless, he responds, deepening the kiss and pulling my body closer to his.
"I love you," I murmur against his lips, trying to catch my breath for a second.
"I love you, too. So, so much," he says before sucking my bottom lip into his mouth, his tongue sweeping over it.
Slow and greedy kisses are exchanged until a car horn blares from outside causing us to pull apart with breathless giggles. I grab his hand and pull him outside to the car. Alex opens up the car door, and I expect him to let me slip in first like he usually does, but he stands in front of the door and sticks his head inside to talk to the driver.
"Hey, man. I appreciate you coming, but we won't need your services anymore." He smiles and hands the driver a tip anyway before closing the door. He turns back to me with a grin on his face.
"Um, how are we supposed to get back to the hotel?" I ask curiously with a giggle.
He holds out his hand, and I instinctively take it. "Dance with me." He starts walking backwards, out from under the awning and towards the rain, pulling me with him.
"What?" I laugh, planting my heeled clad feet on the ground. "Alex, are you crazy? It's raining out, and it's cold."
He causally shrugs a shoulder. "C'mon. Live a little." He tugs on my arm, and I find myself hesitantly following him.
"Alex," I say wearily.
A mischievous grin breaks out onto his face, and he keeps slowly inching backwards.
When he steps off the curb and out from under the awning, rain drops seep into his suit jacket and start wetting his hair. He doesn't even flinch from the cold water.

"Come on," he softly urges when I falter at the curb.
The gleam in his eye and the boyish grin on his face do me in. Screw it. I have to make these last moments count.
I hug my coat closer to my body and take the step off the curb and into the rain. My body instantly tenses from the cold water seeping into my clothes and hitting my exposed skin. Alex pulls me close to his body, providing me very little heat as we start to sway, him humming some random tune into my damp hair.
"Remember the first time we danced in the rain?" he asks after a while.
A smile tugs at my lips. "Yeah. That seems like forever ago."
He hums in agreement. "We've come a long way."
Without warning, he bends down to scoop me up in his arms, sweeping me off my feet.
"Alex!" I yelp out in surprise followed by a string of laughter as he spins us around a few times.
He stops and looks up at me, the smile on his face falling, his features turning serious. His eyes are filled with nothing but love and adoration. "You make me really happy," he says with all sincerity, causing my eyes to prick with tears.
"You make me really happy, too," I whisper, trying to keep my voice even.
To stop myself from crying, I lean down and capture his lips with mine, trying to express every emotion I can trough the kiss to let him know how I feel.
A large rumble of thunder causes us to break the kiss, both of our eyes going wide.
Alex puts me back on my feet. "Race you back to the hotel?"
I grab onto his broad shoulder to support myself as I toe off my heels. "You're on, buddy," I say, already taking off down the street towards the hotel.
The whole run back is full of laughs and playfully trying to trip each other up. When we make it back to the hotel, we're both breathless and soaking wet, earning us glares from the people behind the front desk.
We race up to the hotel room, laughing and shrieking, Alex sweeping me off my feet a time or two to get ahead.
When we reach the hotel room door, I dig into my purse to find the keycard. Alex is plastered to my back, his hands on my hips and lips on my neck, making it difficult to focus and put the keycard into the slot correctly. Finally, the little green light flashes and we anxiously go stumbling into the room.
Inside, Alex kicks the door closed behind us and spins me around to once again place his lips on mine in a searing kiss. He's quick to shrug off his suit jacket and lazily throw it to the floor. Then, he starts undoing the buttons at the top of his white dress shirt, not once removing his lips from mine.
When he's halfway done with the buttons, he grabs my hands and brings them up to his chest where I feel his heart beating rapidly under my palm. He glides my hands down his warm skin until I reach his shirt where he stopped with the buttons, silently urging me to undo the rest. Butterflies erupt in my stomach, and my trembling fingers somehow manage to undo the tiny little buttons blindly.
I run my fingers over his now exposed toned stomach, up his chest, and around his shoulders to help him get the shirt off, but its soaking wet and sticking to his skin.
He lets out a low growl of frustration, pulling his lips away from mine to struggle to get the shirt off.
I can't help but laugh at the whole situation, going behind him to literally rip the shirt off his body. He ends up letting out a laugh too and quickly reclaims my mouth with his.
His hands find the tie at the front of my coat, slowly pulling at it until it comes apart and my coat falls open. Just like his suit jacket and shirt, my coat ends up strewn on the floor.
Suddenly, the kiss grows tentative and the moment becomes that much more intimate.
With shaking fingers, Alex's hands brush my wet hair to the side and slide up my back to the zipper at the top of my dress, slowly pulling it down inch by inch. I shiver as the cold air hits the now exposed skin of my back and at the thought of what's going to happen next.
At an antagonizing slow speed, my dress eventually slips off my body and pools down at my feet causing my breath to catch in my throat.
Alex's lips wander from mine, going down my jaw, to my neck, and ghosting over my collar bones.
"Alex," I groan out as he starts to softly nip at my skin, and I reach up to thread my fingers through his hair.
He bends down and grabs the back of my thighs, lifting me up to wrap my legs around his torso as he starts to move towards the bed.
I know it's selfish and greedy of me to want him right now since I'll be leaving in the morning, but by his actions and his body language, I can tell he wants me too. While it may be cruel, I want the last few hours with him to be nothing but perfect. To show him how much I love him and truly care about him before I vanish into thin air.
Right before the back of his knees hit the bed, I murmur against his lips the words I want him to remember when I'm gone. "I love you, Alex."
"I love you, Joslyn."
The rest of the night consists of breathless giggles, intimate smiles, affectionate touches, adoring words, and so much love.
