《Expectations》Chapter 42

A few hours after Hallie is born, I have to say goodbye to everyone and leave to catch a plane to South America. The second leg of the tour started there over a week ago and we only came back to the states for the award show. The original plan was for everyone to fly back together to South America after the award show, but I'm running a little late since I had to find a new flight back by myself.

When I finally land, it's already 11:00 a.m. so I go straight to the venue. Going into Alex's dressing room, no one is in there but the bathroom door is closed and I hear the shower turn on. Looking at my watch, I figure Alex must have just finished up a workout with his trainer and is in the shower now.

Running off zero hours of sleep after being up for over twenty four hours, I lay down on the couch only intending to close my eyes for a few minutes, but Alex's voice coming from the shower lulls me to sleep.

"Hey," a soft voice pulls me from my unconsciousness, and a gentle hand runs up and down my arm. I know its Alex by the familiar scent of shampoo wafting into my nose.

I slowly blink my tired eyes open to see him kneeling down in front of me, hair still damp from his shower and a smile on his lips.

"Hi," I rasp out, forcing myself to sit up on the couch despite my body feeling so heavy with sleep.

"When did you get here?" he asks, standing up and taking a seat next to me.

"Whenever you got in the shower." I yawn, closing my eyes again and resting my head on his shoulder.

"Have you slept at all?"

"No," I groggily admit. From getting ready for the award show yesterday to jetting between countries, I didn't sleep at all, my anxiety of flying preventing me from any rest.

He lets out a disheartened sigh, resting his hand on my thigh. "Get some sleep, Joss. We have a little over two hours before we have to go to interviews and everything."

"Hmm, I'm ok," I lie, trying to fight my sleep, but I can't even manage to open my eyes.

"It's ok, I got you. I'll wake you up when we have to go. Get some sleep," I hear him say before I slip back out of consciousness, and I feel him press a kiss to the top of my head.

The piercing screams in the arena help keep me awake when the show starts.

"You ok?" Shay yells over the crowd. "You should really get some sleep. It's ok if you miss one show, you know?"

I vigorously shake my head, trying to wake myself up. "I'm ok." I try to flash her a convincing smile.

She just rolls her eyes. "You're so stubborn."

I momentarily close my eyes until the song ends and more screams fill the air. When I open my eyes I spot a pair of blue ones staring back at me with concern. I send Alex a convincing smile, letting him know I'm ok.

He frowns and walks over to the side of the stage to whisper something into Milo's ear before starting up the next song.

Within a minute, Milo is standing in front of me with a stern expression on his face. "Let's go," he demands.

"What?"

"Alex told me you need to go back to the dressing and sleep, and I'm not to take no for an answer."

"That little..." I cut myself off and sigh. "Alright," I agree because I know if I don't I'll only be a distraction to Alex for the rest of the show.

Walking to the backstage area, I lock eyes with Alex and he flashes me a thankful smile to which I only stick my tongue out at him. He playfully sticks his tongue out back at me and the girls in front of me lose their minds thinking he's communicating with them and we both can't help but laugh.

Walking into the dressing room, I immediately flop down on the couch and fall asleep within seconds.

It feels like I've only been asleep for a few a few minutes before I hear a familiar voice calling my name.

"Joss," Alex whispers, rubbing the pad of his thumb over my cheek.

"Hmm," I hum out, managing to open my eyes. "Is the show over?"

"Yeah." He chuckles. "It's been over for over an hour. I already showered and packed everything up and took it to the bus."

"Alex," I whine, feeling bad that he did my job for me.

"Joslyn," he whines in a mocking manner, a teasing smirk on his face. "Come on, let's go to the bus," he says, and before I can even get up he's bending down and scooping me up in his arms.

"Alex, put me down!" I groggily mumble, still not fully coherent.

"No can do."

With a huff, I give in and let him carry me, even slowly drifting back to sleep on the walk to the bus.

Stepping onto the bus, Alex immediately tucks me into my bunk and lingers around to soothingly run his fingers through my hair to lull me to sleep.

Right as I'm about to fall asleep I hear Shay whispering to Alex. "You really love her, huh?"

"Yeah," Alex says fondly. "Yeah, I do." I hear the smile in his voice and it makes my stomach flutter. "Night, Joss." He kisses my forehead before drawing my bunk curtain closed and going to his own bunk.

When I wake up again, it's in the very early hours of the morning before the sun is even up, so I decide to turn on the small flip down TV in my bunk to try to drift back off to sleep. Flipping through the channels, I land on a late night channel playing my favorite TV show, and it just so happens to be my favorite episode: Phoebe's wedding.

Smiling, I lay back in my small bunk and try to force myself to stay awake to enjoy Friends.

I can't help but let out a small laugh when Phoebe hysterically yells at Monica for running her wedding and not letting her fiancée go to the bathroom anytime he wants. A few moments after my laugh, I hear someone's bunk curtain draw back, and I instantly feel bad for waking someone up.

"What's so funny?" Alex asks, peeking his head into my bunk and looking at the screen.

"No!" I whisper shout, covering his eyes and pushing him out of my bunk. "You're not this far in the series yet!"

He lets out an annoyed huff and removes my hand from his face. "I don't care, scoot over."

"What?" Instead of answering my question he jumps up into my bunk. "Alex!" I squeal out in surprise, and my face flushes when he hovers above me in the small space and covers my mouth with his hand.

"Shh," he warns since everyone else is asleep. "Now, scoot over," he says and I comply, letting him wedge himself between my body and the wall. "Why are you up?" he asks, shuffling around in my bunk to get comfortable. He eventually lays down on his back and pulls me in to lay on his chest.

"This is my favorite episode. It's the one where Phoebe gets married."

He hums in acknowledgement and we stay silent for a while, watching the episode play out.

"It's so beautiful," I say in awe, admiring the snow covered streets and decorations as Phoebe's wedding starts. "I hope my wedding turns out just like that."

"Yeah?" Alex asks.

"Mhm." I instinctively hug Alex tighter as Phoebe and Mike say their vows, willing myself not to tear up. "I want a beautiful winter wedding with snow covering the ground. Nothing to where it shuts down the streets, but just enough to give it some ambiance. I don't want anything too big or too small, and it doesn't even have to be perfect. All I want is a nice little church packed with the people I love."

"That does sound perfect. You'll get your dream wedding someday," he says, brushing some hair out of my face.

"I hope so," I say through a yawn, snuggling closer to his chest. I know I should make him get up and go back to his own bunk, but I'm too comfortable and too tired to fight him on it.

"You will, Joss. You will."
