《Expectations》Chapter 34

Joslyn stands in front of the vanity, holding a black dress up to her body. She turns at different angles to examine herself, scowling. Letting out a huff, she throws the dress over the back of the styling chair and walks over to the couch, flopping down next to Shay.

"What's wrong?" Shay asks.

"I don't know what to wear," Joslyn whines.

"What are you talking about? That dress is perfect." Shay points to the dress Joslyn was looking at in the mirror seconds ago.

"But is it too... much?"

"No. You're going to a fancy restaurant opening. It's perfect."

"I guess." Joslyn sighs, letting her head fall back on the top of the couch.

"What time is your date?" Shay asks, looking at her watch.

Date.

The word makes my blood boil. Is that what they're calling it?

I can't believe she's actually going out with this Darren guy. Who is he anyway? He practically oppressed her into the date, not taking no for an answer. So I don't know if you can call it a date. It's more of a hostage situation. I know she's talked with the guy a handful of times, but she's never seemed interested.

But what if she does like him?

"In an hour or so," Joslyn grumbles.

At least she doesn't sound happy about it.

"You better start getting ready. Beauty takes time," Shay says.

Joslyn glares at her. "Well, lucky for me, I'm not trying to impress anybody."

Thank God.

"You should. He's cute."

Joslyn gives her a look before chuckling. "I don't think your fiancée would appreciate you calling other men cute."

"What? I'm still allowed to think other men are cute." Shay defends herself. "Just not as cute, and quit stalling! Go get ready!"

Joslyn groans as she stands up from the couch, walking over to grab the dress, making her way to the bathroom.

"And as for you," Shay says, standing up and pointing at me. "Beauty and time make exceptions for no one. Let's get you in the chair."

By the time I'm finished getting ready for the show, Joslyn steps out of the bathroom, making my jaw drop. She's in that little black dress that's fairly modest but hugs her body perfectly. Her hair is curled and there's minimal makeup on her face.

"What do you guys think?" Joslyn timidly asks, holding her arms out and giving a little twirl.

"You look beautiful," I breathe, the words falling out of my mouth like word vomit.

"Thank you," Joslyn says nervously, tucking a strand of her dark brown hair behind her ear.

Shay wolf whistles, grinning afterwards. "Damn girl, you know how to clean up."

"Shut up." Joslyn laughs, shaking her head as she walks over to her suitcase to slip on some black heels.

Is she trying to kill me?

"But there's something missing," Shay says, tapping her chin in thought. "Come here." She grabs Joslyn's wrist, dragging her to the styling chair to apply some dark, smoky eyeshadow that makes her hazel eyes pop. "There, perfect." Shay smiles at her work.

"Wow, you look stunning," someone says from the doorway. It's Darren.

Understandably, his eyes are wide and twinkling as he stares at Joslyn.

"Oh, hey, Derek," Joslyn says, shooting out of the chair.

Derek. That's right.

"You ready to go?" He smiles, leaning against the doorframe, trying to act all cool and casual in his black dress pants and white button up shirt with the sleeves rolled up.

"Yeah, just let me grab my bag," Joslyn says, walking over to the coffee table to grab the small black handbag Shay let her borrow. "Ready," she announces, meeting him in the doorway. "I'll see you guys later," she calls out over her shoulder to me and Shay before following Derek down the hall.

"Bye."

After the show, I quickly run off the stage and back to my dressing room in hopes that Joslyn's back already. To my luck, the room is empty.

Sighing, I walk into the bathroom to take a shower, hoping she'll be back soon. By the time I'm done, the only person in the room is Shay, packing up all of my stuff. Joslyn's job.

"She's not back yet?" I ask, disappointed.

"Nope."

On the bus, I can't help but pace back and forth, intently gazing out the window every now and then.

"Will you stop?" Shay asks, mildly annoyed.

"Sorry," I mumble, taking a seat next to the window.

"What are you so antsy for?" she asks, looking up at me from her magazine.

"I'm just... I'm worried about her," I admit.

"Joslyn's a big girl. She know how to handle herself."

"I know." I sigh, resting my head against the cool glass of the window.

"I just don't get it," Shay mumbles to herself, shaking her head.

"Get what?"

"You care so much about her, but then..." she trails off.

"Then what?"

"Nothing," she says quickly, picking up her magazine.

I'm about to question her further, but I spot Joslyn and Derek walking towards the bus. They stop near the door and I can't help but press my nose against the glass to see them better. Thank God the widows are tinted on the outside.

They exchange a few words and Joslyn smiles, fiddling with her fingers, but I can tell it's not a real smile. It doesn't meet her eyes.

Derek leans in and I find myself biting the inside of my cheek so hard it nearly draws blood.

He's going to kiss her.

My stomach knots and I suddenly feel sick.

Joslyn, no! Don't kiss that tool bag, I pray.

When his lips are centimeters away from hers, Joslyn turns her head at the last second, leaving him to kiss the corner of her mouth.

It takes everything inside me not to stand on my feet and cheer out loud.

When Derek pulls away he looks muddled, awkwardly scratching the back of his head. They exchange goodbyes and he walks away like a dog with its tail between its legs.

That's right, D-bag.

When the bus door opens, I immediately turn around in my seat, casually pretending to look at something on my phone.

"Hey," Joslyn greets us as she enters the front lounge.

"Hey. How was it?" I find myself asking.

"It was ok," she says nonchalantly, taking off her heels.

"Just ok?" Shay asks.

"Yeah,." Joslyn shrugs, making me happier than ever. I was afraid she might come back here all giddy like a love sick teenager. "I think I'm going to go shower and head to bed. Night, guys," she says, heading towards the back of the bus.

For the next week and a half, Joslyn spends most of her time with Derek. I won't lie and say that I'm not jealous, because I am.

I miss her. I miss having breakfast with her, joking around with her, watching Friends with her, talking with her, and just spending the day with her. I miss her smile, her laugh, her voice. I just miss her.

"See you later," Joslyn's voice breaks me from my thoughts.

Looking up from the dressing room couch, Joslyn and Derek are standing in the doorway after going out to lunch together.

Derek bends down and places a kiss to Joslyn's lips, and I swear I can just die right here. He pulls away with a smug smile on his face, telling her goodbye before vanishing down the hall.

"Um, what was that?" Shay excitedly squeals.

"Nothing," Joslyn mumbles, cheeks turning a bright shade of red.

"Nothing my ass!" Shay exclaims. "How long has that been going on?"

Joslyn just rolls her eyes. "Alex, meet and greet starts in ten minutes," she says, ignoring Shay's question and gesturing for me to follow her.

"So... you and Derek, huh?" I can't help but ask as we walk down the hall.

"I don't know. Sort of," she confesses, anxiously starting to play with her fingers.

I just nod, an awkward silence falling between us.

"How's Bri?" Joslyn asks, voice small.

"Um, good, I guess," I say confused. "I haven't talked to her since she came to the show."

"Oh."

"Why?"

"Just wondering."

After getting ready for the show, Chris, Milo, Shay, Joslyn, Derek, one of Derek's friends, and I all walk down the hallway to the back of the stage. Joslyn is walking in front of me, Derek's hand resting on her back as he talks to his friend.

As we walk further down the hallway, Derek's hand seems to drop lower and lower until it's resting on her butt. She quickly grabs his wrist, guiding his hand to the middle of her back, but he doesn't get the hint. His hand drops lower again, and she's sure to guide it back up. Again, the asshole doesn't get the hint and he lowers his hand straight to her butt. This time she harshly grabs his wrist, shoving his arm back to his side and she storms off down a nearby hall.

Derek frowns but doesn't go after her, only continuing to talk to his friend.

As much as I want to knock all of his teeth out, my initial instinct is to go after Joslyn to make sure she's ok.

Going to turn down the hall, someone grabs my arm, pulling me back. I look behind me to see Chris gripping my arm, shaking his head.

"You have a show to do," he says firmly.

"I just want to make sure she's ok," I say, jerking my arm out of his tight grip.

"Alex!" Chris yells after me.

"Hey," Shay says, running in front of me and placing a hand on my chest to stop me. "I'll take care of her. Go do the show."

"But—"

Shay shakes her head, gently pushing me in the direction of the stage. "I got it. You can't keep thousands of people waiting."

I let out a sigh, knowing she's right. As much as I want to run after Joslyn, I can't delay the show.

Reluctantly turning on my heel, I head for the stage, not wanting to do the show at all.
