《Expectations》Chapter 14

The next few days of tour go by smoothly, everyone adjusting and figuring out a routine. Alex and I have seemed to get ours down pat. The second show was nothing like the first schedule wise. The following days and shows have been much more relaxed. We ended up having a lot more down time and later wake-up calls. Alex and I have been getting closer, enjoying each other's company. We even find ourselves hanging out during down time between shows.
I'm currently sitting at the small table at the front of the bus, watching the steam roll off my spoon full of oatmeal. This has become my routine. I typically get up at 9:30 a.m. and slowly get out of my bunk. Before taking a shower, I generally check any emails I've gotten throughout the night and reply. By 10:30 a.m. I'm showered and dressed, quietly making my way to the front of the bus to have my morning coffee and oatmeal.
Everyone on the bus is still asleep, they usually sleep until 11:00 or noon, aside from Chris. He generally gets up a little before me to shower and have breakfast. By the time I'm done he's always hidden away in the back lounge of the bus making phone calls, and probably doing other work related things. Not that I mind. I don't really know what I'd talk to him about anyway if he were to share the front lounge with me in the mornings.
As if on cue, Alex rolls out of his bunk and strolls into the front lounge a few minutes after 11:00 a.m.
"Hey." He shoots me a sleepy smile over his shoulder, reaching into one of the cabinets to grab his usual box of cereal before grabbing a bowl, spoon, and milk to go with it.
"Good morning." I smile back before placing the cooled off oatmeal in my mouth.
He slides into the bench across the table from me, and the table is so small that his knees brush up against mine as we sit and enjoy our breakfast.
"Anything exciting on the agenda today?" he asks after a spoonful of his cereal, raising his eyebrows.
"I don't think so." I hum, checking my planner sitting on the table next to me that I've been filling out. I skim my eyes over the page until they fall on today's date. "Nope. No meetings, radio interviews, or anything big. Just the normal handful of interviews after the meet and greet."
"Great."
He shovels more cereal into his mouth and finally runs his fingers through his unruly bed head, although it did little to help. Still, he somehow manages to look perfect. Shay would have a heart attack if his hair looked like that on any other occasion though.
An exasperated groan rings throughout the bus. Speaking of the devil, Shay stumbles into the front lounge, eyes barely open, and she's still in her silk baby pink pajamas. She throws herself down onto the couch with a huff before letting out a loud yawn.
"What time is it? It's way too early to be up," she says, feverishly trying to wipe the sleep from her eyes.
"Shay," Alex says pointedly and lets out a laugh. "It's nearly noon."
"Too early," she mumbles, curling her body into a ball, closing her eyes. Alex and I both humorously smile at each other and roll our eyes.
"Hey, we're here," I verbally point out, looking out the bus window. In the near distance is the beautiful Seattle skyline.

"Guess I better get dressed," Alex says, knees knocking against mine as he slides out of the booth. He picks up his empty cereal bowl and drops it into the sink on his way out.
"Shay?" I ask.
"Huh?" she sleepily grunts out, still curled up in a ball. I swear, this girl is not a 'morning' person. At all.
"Aren't you going to get ready?" I giggle. We should be pulling up to the venue any minute and she still needs to shower and paint her face with makeup, her preferred routine.
"Five more minutes," she groggily whines.
I just roll my eyes and let it slide, because Alex is probably in the bathroom getting dressed anyway.
Picking up my empty bowl and coffee cup, I walk over to the sink, filling it up with soap and water to clean all of the accumulated dishes. I hum lightly as I clean the dishes, making sure to rinse them thoroughly and stack them on the drying rack.
"I can help with those," Alex says, emerging back into the front lounge fully dressed in a simple white t-shirt and black jeans. He quickly picks up a dish towel and starts hand drying the dishes, placing them back into the cabinets when he's finished.
"Shay," I sing out, hoping she'll finally get up.
No response.
I walk over to her and flick some of the dish water from my fingers onto her and she shoots up.
"What the hell?" She squeals, unsure of what happened.
Alex is laughing behind me and I can't help but laugh at her reaction as well. "Now that you're fully awake, go get ready!" I tell her, pointing a stern finger in the direction of the bathroom.
"Fine, mom," she grumpily grumbles, finally standing and brushing past me to get to the bathroom. I really like the girl, I do, but she is a hot mess in the mornings.
I simply roll my eyes and go back to cleaning the dishes.
Handing the last dish to Alex, I see that there are bubbles stuck to my hands from the dish soap so I take it as an opportunity to blow them off in the direction of his face. Lightly blowing into the palm of my hand, the bubbles go flying through the air and pop as soon as they make contact with Alex's face. He slightly jumps, caught off guard.
He turns he gaze to me and a devilish smirk appears on his face when he realizes what happened. "Oh, so we're going to play this game?" he asks humorously, flinging the dish towel over his shoulder and folding his toned arms over his chest, staring me down.
I turn up one corner of my lips and shrug a shoulder, brushing past him in attempt to not face retaliation.
He grabs my wrist and spins me around before I can leave the room, blowing the bubbles he's cupped into his palm right in my face. I quickly squeeze my eyes shut to avoid any of them getting into my eyes.
"Alex!" I yell, opening my eyes to see him cockily smiling at me.
I quickly wipe away the bubbles with my free hand and open my mouth to give him a piece of my mind but I'm quickly interrupted.
"Children," Chris's voice is clipped with warning when he enters the front of the bus, glaring at me and Alex.
I feel my body go stiff from the scolding as well as Alex's, his hand slightly tightening around my wrist. It felts like we've been caught red handed with the tone he used.

We weren't doing anything wrong, but embarrassment rolls through my body when I realize how unprofessional this must look. Chris is a pretty uptight business guy, so I'm thoroughly embarrassed and ashamed of having him see me like this and being scolded by him.
I uncomfortably clear my throat and Alex lets go of my wrist. Chris seems to send us one final look of warning before informing us to come inside the venue soon, and he steps out of the bus that rolled up to the venue minutes ago.
"Uh, I guess we should get our stuff and go inside," I say, awkwardly playing with my fingers, still feeling embarrassed.
"Yeah." Alex scratches the back of his head, ushering me to go first down the narrow bus hallway, and we both go off to gather our things and go inside the venue.
I can tell Joslyn's been off since this morning. All throughout the rest of the morning, meet and greet, sound check, and interviews she's been somewhat quiet and standoffish. Even now, sitting at one of the tables in catering, eating dinner before the show, she's quiet, picking at her food.
"You ok?" I ask, pulling her from her thoughts.
"Hmm?" She snaps her eyes to mine, realizing she hasn't been so present.
"Are you ok? You've kinda been off all day."
She lets out a sigh and leans back in her chair. "Yeah, I guess. I'm just... a little embarrassed about this morning. You know... with Chris scolding us like we were children." Her head is hanging low and she peers up at me through her lashes. "I don't know, I guess I just don't want him to look down on me or think he made the wrong decision by hiring me." She nervously plays with her fingers as she speaks.
"Joslyn." I lightly chuckle, placing one of my hands over hers in attempt to stop her nervous habit. "Is that what you're so off about?"
My suspicion is confirmed when she shyly looks away and shrugs her shoulders.
"Hey," I gently squeeze both of her small hands in my large one. I find myself prying her fingers apart with my thumb to soothingly graze the ink etched into her middle finger. "Don't worry about it. I know Chris can seem like a hard ass sometimes, and be intimidating as hell, but I doubt he even remembers this morning."
"I know, but I just hate that he saw me like that. I don't want him to think I'm unprofessional or that I don't take this job seriously." She lowers her head again, looking down at our hands.
"I know, but I promise you he doesn't think that. Joslyn, you're the best assistant I've had in a long, long time. I know it's only been a little over a week, but you're doing great at this job. You have nothing to worry about. Ok?"
"Ok," she whispers, the corners of her mouth slightly twitching upwards.
We finish dinner and go back to my dressing room where Shay is unpacking all of her products. I take my seat in her chair and Joslyn hops up onto the corner of the vanity, her normal spot.
"Ready?" Shay asks and I nod.
While Shay is getting me ready for the show, the conversation her, Joslyn, and I are having is interrupted.
"Sellout!" some male voices yell out in unison, dragging out and emphasizing the word 'out'.
It startles everyone in the room, especially Milo who is now stood up in full defense mode from his seat in the corner of the room.
"No way," Joslyn breaths out, jumping down from the counter with a huge smile on her face. She quickly makes her way over to the guys, flinging her arms around them. "What are you doing here?" she excitedly asks, pulling away from them.
Milo relaxes as soon as he realizes she knows them.
Both of the guys are fairly tall with dark hair, but one has some facial hair while the other has long curly hair. They're both dressed in dark jeans and band t-shirts.
"Couldn't miss seeing my little sis at her fist fancy big girl job," the shorter one with curly hair says. He ruffles the hair on her head, which she doesn't appreciate, swatting his hand away and immediately fixing her hair.
"We may just have come to try and win you back, Princess," the taller one with the facial hair says, flinging his arm around her shoulders. She blushes and swats him in the chest, causing him to laugh.
Boyfriend?
"There's my girl," an older man who I remember seeing the first day says, coming into the room with Bob.
"Dad!" Joslyn excitedly yells, running over to fling her arms around the dark haired man and he reciprocates, lifting her off the ground for a moment.
"I can't believe this," she says, pulling away and flicking her eyes across the room to all three guys, smile growing impossibly wider. "Seriously, why are you here?"
"We have a few days before tour starts and we decided to make a pit stop to pay our favorite girl a visit. Andy and Travis say hi. They wanted to fly out too but someone had to get the van all the way to California and set up before hand," her dad informs her.
"You guys are crazy." She shakes her head, still smiling. "Oh, guys," she turns to Shay and I. "This is Joe, Zack, and my dad." She gestures to each of them. "And this is Alex and Shay," she informs them, introducing all of us and we all greet each other.
We all end up in a friendly conversation and Shay doesn't fail to mention that she's a fan of their band. They're in total shock, not believing she knows who they are.
Once the conversation dies down, the guy named Zack awkwardly clears his throat. "Hey, Joss, um... do you— do you care if I talk to you for a sec?" he shakily asks, wiping his palms over his jeans.
"Um, sure..." She seems as nervous, but confused. He takes her hand and leads her into the hallway where they have some privacy, but at the angle I'm sitting I can see them through the doorway.
"Twenty bucks says she hits him." Her brother Joe snickers while elbowing her dad. The first thing that runs through my mind is that this Zack guy is breaking up with her.
I turn my attention back to the two in the hallway and they both still look nervous about what's about to go down. Finally, Zack starts frantically talking, his hands moving as he does.
After a while, Joslyn's faces turns to one of shock before it contorts to one of anger. She starts talking back, shoving a finger into his chest threateningly, and he holds his hands up in defense. When she's done speaking, he frantically starts talking again, probably defending himself. While he talks her face starts to soften, but it's skeptical. Finally, in the end, she ends up smiling and even hugs him tightly.
What the hell did I just witness?
They come back into the room, both smiling.
"Did she hit you?" Joe excitedly asks.
"No." Zack laughs. "She was about to though. But I'm pretty sure she bruised me. Jabbed her finger into my chest pretty hard," he jokes, rubbing the spot on his sternum.
"What did you say?" Joslyn's dad cautiously asks her.
"Well at first I threatened to kill him for being so stupid and reckless. Then I told him he better be there for her and the baby or else, I swear, I'll kill him with my bare hands. But he assured me he's going to be there for them every step of the way and he's excited to be the best dad he can be. I finally came around and freaked out, in a good way." She laughs.
So, I'm guessing he's not her boyfriend.
"Thank God," Zack breaths out. "I really thought she was going to rip me a new one."
"Oh, I still might," she jokes.
The rest of the night before the show starts, we all hang out in my dressing room chatting. The guys and I even end up playing video games. I have to admit, they're all pretty great and to see the smile they bring to Joslyn's face is priceless. I'm glad they came and stayed around for the show.
