《Expectations》Chapter 13

When Shay is done getting the flour out of Alex's hair, she quickly styles it and applies some light makeup to his face. Once she's satisfied with his look, she lets us go and we walk down the hall to a room where all of the press and interviews are going to be held.

One by one, throughout the morning and afternoon, I let interviewers into a room to speak with Alex for their allotted time, as written on my schedule. It's amusing to sit in on the interviews and listen some of them ask the most ridiculous questions. Some interviewers even got him to play quirky games during their time. Regardless, it's a long process watching interview after interview that consists of similar questions go on for about three hours.

When the last interviewer leaves the room I give her a small smile before walking over to Alex who is leaning back in his chair and letting out a relieved sigh.

"Thank God, the worst part is over," he says, running his hands over his face. "I'm sorry, but if one more person asks me how excited I am for the show tonight or how this tour is going to be different from the others I'm going to explode."

I can't help but let out a small giggle and shoot him a sympathetic smile. Nearly every interviewer did ask him that question, and there were only a number of ways he could change up his answer to not be so repetitive and robotic. I have to admit, even I was getting a little bored of that question.

"Let's go to lunch, I'm starving." He stands up and rubs a hand over his stomach.

We walk down the hall to where catering is set up and grab our lunch, sitting down at an empty table. Most of the tables are empty, only a few people are throughout the room considering it's 2:00 p.m. and most of the crew got to eat around noon.

Alex lets out a sigh and grabs his sandwich, taking a few bites. Now that I'm sitting right next to him and able to see him up close, I can see his eyes hold a slight dullness to them and they're laced with a bit of hardness, an utter contrast to this morning. I also detect some agitation as his leg bounces up and down under the table and he has his eyes are cast down, not looking at anything in particular.

"Hey." I gently touch his forearm, gaining his attention as he stops mid chew to look at me. "Are you good?"

He lets out a breath through his nose, finishing up chewing and setting his sandwich down before wiping his hands over his jeans. "Yeah, I just didn't get much sleep last night." He runs a hand through his hair, tugging at the ends and sitting up straighter. "Then having to do interviews for over three hours doesn't really help. I guess I'm just still really nervous about tonight."

I nod and purse my lips in understanding. I can see he's hitting a wall and needs some comfort and reassurance to troop forward.

"You're going to do great tonight. I've seen the show and how hard you've been working. Everything will go just fine," I try to reassure him. "Heck, I'm sure most of these girls would even pay a hundred dollars and give you a standing ovation just to watch you stand there and breath," I try to joke, and my heart swells a bit when a genuine smile tugs at his lips.

"How about this," I continue. "After you're done eating, why don't we go back to your dressing room and I'll let you sneak in a twenty minute nap? How does that sound?"

"That sounds perfect," he breaths out with a lazy smile. "Thanks, Joslyn."

"No problem." I give him a reassuring smile.

After we're done eating we go to his dressing room which is thankfully empty. I softly close the door and he plops down on the couch, laying his body across it and snuggling his face into the arm rest.

I take a seat in the chair diagonal to the couch and pull out my phone to occupy myself. For the first few minutes I feel his eyes on me, but when I look over at him five minutes later his eyes are finally closed and I can see his chest move in slow, even breaths. His facial features have softened and smoothed over, and I have to admit, he looks pretty cute and cozy all snuggled up, peacefully sleeping on the couch. However, after twenty minutes I decide it's time to wake him up in order to freshen up and get to his meet and greet on time.

"Alex," I softly call out in attempt to stir him from his nap, but it's no use. "Alex," I try again, reaching over to rub his shoulder.

He begins to stir, but quickly snuggles his face further into the arm rest.

"No." I quietly giggle at his cute attempt to ignore me. "Come on." I shake his shoulder again. "Your meet and greet starts in fifteen minutes and I'm pretty sure I'll be fired on the spot if you're not there on time and looking your best for a photo of some peoples life time," I tease. "Plus, who knows if your next assistant will let you take naps."

He slowly flutters his blue eyes open and playfully glares at me before sitting up and stretching, some of his bones making small cracking noises. He lets out a sigh and smiles. "I guess we can't let that happen."

"Good choice," I tease. "Now, let's get that pretty face perked up and picture perfect so these girls get their money's worth."

He rolls his eyes and rubs his hands repetitively over his face in attempt to wake himself up. "Better?" he asks, flashing me a smile, the same one he'll use in the photos.

"Better," I confirm. "But," I stand up and quickly run my hands through his soft, chocolaty locks in attempt to tame them after he's slept on them. "There, perfect," I say once I'm satisfied with my work.

"Thanks." He runs his hands over the top of his jeans and stands up. "Ready?" he asks, heading towards the door.

"Isn't it my job to lead you?" I quirk an eyebrow at him.

"Yeah, but you're not doing too great of a job at it," he teases, and I dramatically gasp, playfully shoving his shoulder as we walk out the door.

We make our way into the room where the meet and greet will be held. The room is small with a backdrop set up in the middle that has his name on it to pose in front of. There's a man in the room messing with a camera that I've spotted around a few times, taking pictures of Alex all throughout rehearsals. I remember Chris introducing him to me on the first day, and I'm almost positive his name is Sam. Also, standing in the corner of the room is Milo.

"Hey, guys," Sam greets us. "Alex, let's get some test shots in before we actually start."

Alex goes to stand in front of the backdrop and poses, smile on his face, as Sam snaps a few photos, reviewing them to make sure the lighting and everything is perfect.

"Great," Sam praises Alex. "Hey," he gestures to me. "Do you mind stepping in for a test shot?"

"Oh, um, sure," I hesitantly comply, walking over to Alex who wraps his arm around my shoulder and I place mine around his waist, both of us flashing smiles. Sam snaps a couple more pictures and decides that everything is ready to go.

At exactly 3:00 p.m. I open the door that holds back the fans to the room, hearing them instantly squeal as the door opens. One by one, I usher them in to get their picture with Alex while Milo keeps a watchful eye and makes sure everyone moves along. No one is able to linger around to talk to Alex, that's what the Q&A is for.

Its entertaining to watch all the fans come and go. Some cry while others are speechless, and then there are the ones that sport the biggest smiles while telling him how much they love him. I feel like I've seen almost every emotion within the past thirty minutes. But I've decided that the little kids are my favorite. They're all so cute, running up to him to give him a hug. He always responds with a big bear hug and makes sure to make their experiences a little more special.

Once everyone gets their picture, we move to the stage where Alex sings a few acoustic songs and answers some fan questions. Again, its entertaining to hear some of the questions they come up with.

When that's complete I have to take Alex backstage to do a quick interview with some reps of the stadium and the local news station. By the time all of that is complete it's 6:30 p.m., Alex due on stage at 9:00 after the opening acts.

We quickly grab dinner and chill out in his dressing room for a bit, him doing some vocal warm ups to pass the time. Then at 8:00 Shay comes in, ready to work her magic.

"Let's do this! Day one is a go," she says excitedly, sitting Alex down in front of her vanity. "Joslyn, you're too far away. I want to get to know you better. Sit," she says, tapping on the counter of the vanity, signaling for me to sit there instead of on the couch.

I comply, walking over and lifting myself up onto the corner of the counter, leaning my back against the wall with the mirror, sitting crisscross, diagonally facing Alex in his chair.

"Joslyn, tell me about yourself," she says, starting to mess with Alex's hair.

I inwardly groan, still hating that question. Out of the corner of my eye I see Alex trying to bite back a laugh, already knowing what's going on in my head. I shoot him a glare and turn my attention back to Shay.

"Well," I begin uneasy, still not knowing what to say. "I'm 20, from Nashville, and for the past few years I've been on the road with my brother's band. My dad's been a tour manager for years for different bands until settling on my brother's. I've been on the road with them ever since as their personal assistant and whatever they need, but I'm trying to work my way up, wanting to be a manger myself one day."

"That's really awesome. I hope it all works out for you," she praises and I thank her. "What's your brother's band?"

"The band's name is called Capture This. They're pretty small though, but they've been getting bigger over the years. They're going on their third run of a pretty popular touring summer festival soon and they tend to have a pretty decent crowd during their sets, so hopefully this year it gets even bigger."

"Wait, your brother is in Capture This?" she asks, eyes going wide. "I actually love their music! I saw them last year on tour and loved them!"

"No way," I say in disbelief. "I can't believe you actually know who they are!"

"Oh yeah! I've been listening to them since I saw them last year because I thought they were good. Funny how small the world is." She smiles and shakes her head.

While she finishes up Alex's hair, makeup, and wardrobe, we have an in depth conversation about some of our favorite bands, as well as our lives. I learn that she's from Main and engaged to her high school sweetheart, set to marry at the end of the year. During our conversation I decide that I really like her, her boldness and humor shining through. She's right, she is a strong personality.

When Alex is finished getting dressed, a knock comes from his door and in walks Chris and Milo, as well as his parents, bringing an instant tension to the room, to which I'm not sure why.

"All ready?" Chris asks, eyes shifting to everyone in the room, eventually landing on Alex.

"Ready as I'll ever be," Alex says, anxiously straightening out his shirt.

"Great, let's do this," Chris says with a smile, trying to lighten the mood as we all make our way down the hall and to the back of the stage.

"Good luck sweetie." Alex's mom hugs him into her side, kissing his cheek as we walk down the hall. She leaves a small lipstick stain on his cheek and I can see Shay's face contort into one of anger and she quickly wipes it off.

"Go kill it." His is dad claps him on the back.

When we get to the back of the stage, Alex turns to face us all, letting out a breath of air and giving everyone a nervous smile.

"Good luck." Chris steps up to give him a quick bro hug.

"Go kill it rock star." Shay steps up next to give him a hug.

All that's left is me and Milo, who I know won't do anything. Alex's looks at me expectantly and I step up, wrapping my arms around his neck and he tightly pulls me into a hug by the waist.

"You've got this," I reassure him before pulling away and he looks at me with a smile, giving me a small nod.

"Ok, I guess I'll see you guys in a bit," he says, bidding us all goodbye before climbing up the stairs to the stage.

The rest of us, except for Milo, all make our way out into the crowd to sit behind the sound booth to watch the show. A couple of fans spot Alex's parents and are quick to point and let out a squeal. Throughout the show, it's awkward to see his parents hardly interact with each other, but they're quickly forgotten about when the show starts and Shay makes sure I sing and dance along with her.

The show went on without a hitch, leaving everyone in awe over the whole production. When the show is over we all go backstage to Alex's dressing room where everyone is sure to congratulate him and chit chat for a bit.

"Alright, we've got to get going in order to pack everything up and head to the next city. Everyone say goodbye so Alex can take a shower. Joslyn, be sure to pack up all of his things and we'll all meet back on the bus," Chris announces and everyone says their goodbyes, leaving just Alex, Shay and I in the room.

Alex quickly goes to take a shower while Shay packs up her products and I make sure Alex's things, as well as mine, are packed and stacked near the door.

"Alright, I've got everything. See you on the bus!" Shay calls out to me before carrying her stuff out and onto the bus.

I patiently wait for Alex to finish showering and he comes out soon enough in just a towel wrapped lowly around his hips, running another towel thorough his hair. "Switch?" he asks, referring to the both of us. "You can get the stuff in the bathroom while I get dressed?"

"Sure," I say, walking into the bathroom and shutting the door behind me to give him some privacy. I quickly gather all of his things, towel drying his shampoo and soap bottles that got wet in the shower, and place them in gallon plastic bags. Once I'm done packing all of his things, I knock on the inside of the bathroom door to his dressing room to make sure he's dressed.

"Come in," he calls out and I walk in to see him slipping a shirt over his head, already dressed in some basketball shorts and tennis shoes.

I place all of his things in his suit case, closing it up and standing it up right before slinging on my backpack and grabbing the suitcase handle, as well as his guitar case. "Ready?" I ask.

"Yeah. Here, I can take these." He rushes up to me and grabs his suit case and guitar from my hands, his fingers brushing mine in the process.

"You sure? Cause I can carry—"

"Joslyn, I got it." He smiles and we go to the bus. "So, what did you think? Did everything go ok?" he nervously asks, biting at the corner of his lip.

"Ok? Alex, that was insane! The show was so good and it went on flawlessly."

"Scouts honor?" He smiles.

"Scouts honor." I smile, holding up three fingers as we step onto the bus which is being shared by me, Alex, Chris, Shay, Milo, and Sam.

The rest of the night is spent sitting in the back of the bus excitedly chatting for an hour, trying to wind down from the first night of events. Then, after a while, I finally get to peacefully fall asleep in my surprisingly comfortable bunk.

Yep, I can get used to this.
