《Counting To Fifteen [Grey's Anatomy]》chapter thirty six - a runaway bride

and Calypso were well settled in on Saturday with Naomi when Mark left for the wedding, leaving adequate money to order pizza.

Of course, there had been a disastrous argument over pizza toppings between the two sisters, ultimately leading to a meltdown as Daisy explained to Calypso that the pepperoni she so loved led to the death of millions of baby piglets.

"I'm a murderer." Calypso sobbed loudly into Mark's shoulder, dampening the man's expensive suit jacket.

"You're not a murderer, Caly." Mark sighed, trying his best to comfort the girl as he looked up at Daisy from where we was knelt, the teenager looking all too amused with the situation. "Why would you tell her that?"

"I'm kidding, Cal." Daisy grinned. "We can get pepperoni."

But of course Caly was too wound up to come down.

This happened quite often, actually, with both girls, and Mark always had to play peace-maker.

Mark always had to reassure Calypso that Daisy was just picking on her because that was the role all older siblings played, and she loved her little sister very much.

Daisy tended to get quite upset when Calypso lashed out too, and Mark always had to reassure Daisy that despite Calypso's annoyance that she sometimes turned into insults towards her sister, she actually really admired her big sister.

It was truly bizarre, their relationship. Both girls were always there for each other in the toughest moments, no judgment present as they comforted each other.

But when everything was fine? It was like their love language was arguing and picking fights with each other.

"See? All good. The baby piglets are okay." Mark explained as he patted Calypso's back. "The piglets are gonna live, uh...happy, happy piglet lives."

Daisy took in the suit Mark was wearing, tilting her head. "Why are you dressed like a funeral director?"

Calypso pulled away from the hug out of curiosity, her teary eyes scanning his outfit. "Yeah. You're...you're kinda dressed like an old man."

Mark decided right then that this was the reason he had wanted to become a parent. Not for the responsibility, or the feeling of fulfillment, getting to take care of kids in need. It instead was for the never-ending brutality from his children. They had no problem keeping Mark humble.

Mark was half-tempted to tell Calypso she had killed all the baby piglets by ordering a pepperoni pizza.

But alas he was already running way behind, and he was quickly on his way to the venue.

Mark still hadn't received an invite to April's wedding. The only reason Mark was going was because he was able to mooch off of Caroline's plus one.

Which...Mark found offensive. Caroline had only worked at the hospital for a mere three months, and even she had gotten an invite?

Mark wasn't sure why, but he was getting the impression that Kepner didn't like him.

"I sort of pictured horses and haybales when April said she was getting married in a barn." Caroline spoke in awe, looking at the detailed flowers that littered the inside of the opened barn. "This is legit."

Mark had to admit it was an insanely pretty venue. There were small bulb lights strung about, shedding light on the exposed wood and giving the place a rustic sort of feel. Behind the altar, a wall opened up, revealing a perfectly green meadow and the enormously large snow-capped Mount Rainier in the distance. It was a perfect spring day, small flowers in bloom all over.

Callie waved the pair over to where she was sitting, looking as happy as ever as Caroline sat beside the woman.

Mark found it funny that Callie had befriended Caroline so quickly considering how strongly she'd disliked the woman a couple months prior. But it seemed Callie only viewed Caroline as a threat when the latter was single.

"Owen is my wedding date." Callie stated happily, looping her arm around Owen's as the man beside her looked slightly uncomfortable. "I mean, not technically, because of course Emma is here. But they're letting me sit here because my missus is in the wedding party. Isn't that fun!"

"Oh! Are you dating again?" Caroline smiled, Callie returning the smile.

"Of course not. Arizona is the maid of honor."

Mark cocked his head at that. "You two are together again?"

"Mhm."

"Is...that a good idea?"

Mark loved his friends, and in a perfect world, they would stay married and grow old together and have seventeen children.

But the world was far from perfect, and Callie and Arizona's relationship had become so strained, Mark didn't know how they could possibly mend things.

"It's the best idea I've ever had." Callie decided, a smile on her face as she tried to chat up a conversation with Owen.

Mark hoped it was the best idea she'd ever had, and he hoped it stuck. Callie had gone through so many bottles of wine and store-bought cakes after the first separation, Mark didn't think the woman would survive it a second time.

Jackson walked in a moment later with Stephanie on his arm, the pair taking a seat in front of Mark as Stephanie sat beside Jo, Jackson stuck on the end by the aisle.

"Aw," Mark grinned, taking in the sight of Alex and Jo seated beside Stephanie and Jackson. "Two kids and their attendings."

The joke had been intended for Jackson, Mark just trying to tease the boy a little bit.

But Alex turned around, not looking even slightly impressed.

"Lexie was what, half your age?"

Mark immediately frowned, not finding the situation humorous anymore.

"Who's Lexie?" Caroline asked curiously, Mark not able to find an answer. Alex had that stupid smugness stuck on his face, looking like a school bully as he turned around contentedly in his seat.

It was quiet for a moment, silence encompassing the group of people as thoughts turned in heads.

"They did this place up nice." Jackson spoke up to clear some of the silence, looking around at the lights. "I never really pictured April getting married in a setting like this. It's nice. Pretty."

Mark noticed that Stephanie was engaged in a conversation with Jo, and he took that moment to lean forward a bit. "Are you sure this isn't awkward for you?"

"Awkward? No, God no. I mean...she," Jackson nodded to the woman sat beside him. "Is the best. I'm happier. And I'm really glad April's happy. She deserves it. Matthew's a really great guy, and he, uh...I mean, speak of the devil."

Mark turned, noticing Matthew had begun to walk towards the altar, smiling at the people in the crowd that he knew.

He joined his groomsmen, taking his place beside his friend. Matthew didn't have a best man, but rather a best woman, the lady named Nicole adorned in a long gray dress to match the groomsmen as she nudged her friend.

A few light notes began to trickle from a hidden piano. The doors opened a bit, and Cristina was the first to walk in wearing a pink gown. Her hair was down, her makeup was done, and she glanced over at Owen and his wedding date as she held a bouquet of small flowers to her chest. She looked a little nervous, as if dressing up and being a bridesmaid was not her forte.

Meredith trailed in not far behind, her hair pinned up as she looked a bit more confident walking down the aisle.

Arizona walked in last, looking the happiest to be there. She joined the other two women up at the front, all three of them wearing the same pink color.

Everybody looked happy. It felt like something from a fairytale, with the lights shining and the flowers in the meadow blowing lightly in the wind.

And then there was the matter of April, of course.

The music on the piano grew a bit louder, and the priest asked everybody to stand up as the huge double barn doors opened all the way, revealing the bride standing beside her father.

The two began to walk down the aisle, April scanning faces and smiling so widely, her pearly white smile making the white wedding dress look like a joke.

Her red hair was pulled into a braided updo, a long lace veil tucked in her hair as it trailed behind her.

Jackson smiled as April passed him. He was so happy to see her happy. She was his soulmate.

Platonically, of course. She was his platonic soulmate, despite whatever history the two might've shared.

Matthew looked like he couldn't quite breathe as his bride approached him, a sort of indescribable fondness could be seen in his eyes.

The two looked like giddy teenagers as they held each other's gaze. Mr. Kepner gave his daughter a kiss on the cheek as he moved to sit in the front pew beside his wife, April handing her large bouquet off to Arizona.

April reached to grab her fiancé's hand, the priest telling everybody they could sit as he began the ceremony, asking everybody to join in prayer.

A majority of the doctors in the room weren't particularly religious, but nobody had a problem with bowing their heads for April.

Of course, as soon as everybody lowered their heads and a moment of silence ensued, Derek's cell phone rang out loudly, Meredith glaring over at her husband.

The man excused himself, walking off to the back of the barn and answering his phone as the priest shook the interruption off, beginning a prayer for the two people in front of him.

"Give them the strength to commit their love to one another."

Arizona felt tears build up in her eyes as she looked over at Callie. Her wife gave her a small smile, but the guilt intensified in Arizona's gut. She had cheated on Callie. Arizona wanted to fix their marriage, but Callie just wanted to fix Arizona. Arizona didn't want to be fixed, she didn't know what to do.

"Unshakeable through any storm. Unbreakable in the face of any stress."

Cristina felt uneasy still, glancing over at Owen sat right beside Emma Marling.

Owen and Cristina weren't good together, they weren't good for each other. Cristina knew that. But it felt so wrong, watching him sit there beside another woman. It felt so wrong to Owen watching Cristina up there in that dress.

"A promise we simply refuse to break."

Derek tried to take his seat as discreetly as possible, trying his best to process the phone call he had just received from the President of the United States.

Meredith glanced over at him, and the two held some sort of silent communication as Derek merely blinked.

The prayer ended, the couple looking incredibly bliss as the priest continued on with his talking.

"April and Matthew's closest friends and family are here to bear witness to their union." The priest spoke, the entire wedding party shifting to face the people sat in the rows of seats.

Jackson smiled as he watched April turn, the smile on her face so encompassing. The white dress she adorned looked like it was made for her. April was beautiful, April was so beautiful.

Something felt wrong, though, and Jackson sort of regretted not eating anything before he came.

"Will you promise to love and support their marriage, in all the days to come? If so, please respond, 'we will'."

Something felt wrong, though, and Jackson didn't think it had anything to do with the lack of food in his stomach.

His smile melted so slowly off his face as uneasiness came over him. Regret came over him. April was everything, and he was watching her pledge her life to somebody else.

"We will." Every voice in the room recited—with the exception of Jackson.

His eyes were stuck on April, and he had made the biggest mistake of his life.

Stephanie's head tilted slightly as she surveyed her boyfriend's face, noticing the troubled look he was wearing and noticing that he hadn't chosen to speak aloud his support for the couple like everybody else in the room.

Jackson turned his head slightly, meeting eyes with easily the nicest girl he had ever met. Stephanie was so incredible, but Stephanie wasn't April.

"I, uh..."

Stephanie raised her eyebrows slightly, her voice coming out in the softest tone. "What?"

Jackson furrowed his eyebrows so slightly, speaking in a quiet tone. "I'm sorry."

Stephanie's eyebrows knit together, the woman not sure what Jackson was apologizing for. She didn't have time to inquire what her boyfriend had meant, either, because he stood up from his seat.

The bride and groom didn't seem to notice the action at first. It wasn't until the priest's speech faltered and he looked past the couple that everybody's attention was drawn to Jackson.

It was quiet for a moment, April and Matthew looking back in confusion.

Nobody knew what Jackson was doing. Jackson didn't know what Jackson was doing, and that became the problem as the question circulated his brain.

This was not the time, nor the place. Jackson had his shot with April, and it didn't work out. He had his chance.

Jackson realized what he was doing, and he immediately sat back down in his seat, deciding he was just confused.

Stephanie was confused as she set her sight straight forward, not sure what Jackson was doing.

The bridesmaids all looked at each other before ultimately turning their attention back to the front.

Bailey looked back at Jackson, giving him a look that said glue your ass to that seat without actually saying a word.

Jackson's heart was racing as everybody pretty well slowly turned and decided to ignore Jackson and pretend whatever happened hadn't just happened.

April and Matthew glanced at each other, turning back to the priest who nervously began to chuckle.

"April and Matthew." He began, doing what everybody else was doing and ignoring what had happened.

Jackson decided he was confused. Jackson decided he was so confused about what was happening, about what he was doing. Jackson decided he was confused about what he was feeling.

Jackson wasn't confused though, and that was the problem. He loved April, and he had never been so sure of something in his entire life. He had never been so sure that April loved him back too. He had never been so sure that the woman at the altar was marrying the wrong man.

If you love someone, you tell them.

This was entirely Mark's fault, Jackson decided. If April rejected him in front of everybody, or if Matthew hired a hitman to kill Jackson for stealing his bride, this was entirely Mark's fault.

People said crazy things on their death beds, sure, but Mark was right. And Jackson would rather die than pretend he wasn't in love with April.

He tilted his head slightly as he listened to the priest speak, trying his best to hold it in until he just couldn't anymore.

"I have known the two of you for quite some time, and I'm happy to be here today-"

"I love you, April."

All attention shifted back to the man standing in the middle of the aisle.

April looked baffled, raising her eyebrows up as she watched Jackson speak.

"I always have. I love everything about you." Jackson tried to hide the smile that was threatening to come through.

Matthew slowly turned as he clenched his jaw, looking at Jackson and not seeming to believe the audacity of the hot-shot doctor trying to take his fiancé.

"Even the things I don't like...I love. And I want you with me."

Bailey looked ready to have a stroke as she looked at the poor woman in the wedding dress that was being put on the spot.

The three bridesmaids looked more baffled than anybody, Arizona and Meredith looking up at April, as if wanting to ask if she would seriously consider ditching her fiancé for a past relationship that hadn't worked out.

"I love you, and I think that you love me too."

April's eyes got wide as the confusion on her face turned deeper. The gaze Jackson had her held in brought her back to so many things. April felt flustered as the man she held so much love for spoke.

Jackson tilted his head slightly, waiting for an answer. "Do you?"

• • • •

She did, apparently, because the barn doors opened up, and Jackson and April ran off like they were in some movie.

"God, this is..." Caroline shook her head. "How could she do that to Matthew?"

"I loved it. I thought it was great." Mark shrugged, feeling especially proud of his boy.

Caroline didn't seem happy with that response, and Mark knew what she meant. He did feel bad, truthfully.

Stephanie had walked out briskly as tears threatened to spill from her eyes, and Mark hadn't been able to tell if Stephanie was sad or angry.

Matthew was emotionless as he left, not showing any sign of feeling anything as Mrs. Kepner stood up in front of everybody and frantically explained that there was an open bar near the back and then everybody had to leave.

The two had decided they would leave. Just standing around sipping on drinks at a failed wedding felt a tad bit inappropriate.

Arizona didn't look alright as she stood in the corner, though, and Mark decided to check in with his friend before leaving.

"You alright, Robbins?"

Arizona popped her head up, beaming as she saw the two.

"Hi!" Arizona wrapped Mark in a hug that took him off guard. "Hi! Oh my god, it's so nice to see you!"

The way Arizona spoke made it seem like her and Mark were distant relatives as opposed to best friends that lived down the hall from each other.

"Are...you okay?"

"I'm great." Arizona smiled, pulling away from hugging Mark and instead holding his face in her hands. "God, you are so wonderful. You're my best friend. You know, if I wasn't gay, you and I would absolutely be together."

"I really truly doubt that." Mark disagreed as Arizona let out a loud laugh.

Caroline let a small smile take over her lips, looking slightly concerned for the blonde's sake. "Have you been drinking, Arizona?"

"Have I been drinking? She's so funny, I love her." Arizona spoke to Mark before turning to Caroline and repeating the same thing. "You're so funny, I love you."

"Oh, uh...I love you too, are you-"

Arizona held Caroline's face in her hands as she had done with Mark, personal boundaries out the window at this point. "You are so pretty. I wish you were into women."

"I...I am into women."

"Oh." Arizona frowned, letting her hands fall from Caroline's face. "Why aren't we together, then?"

"You really don't know boundaries, do you?" Caroline let out a nervous sort of laugh, to which Arizona began laughing too.

Mark glanced at the glass of whiskey on the bar top beside Arizona, reaching over to pour the liquid out into the trashcan.

"Hey! I wasn't done with that!"

"No, I...I think you are." Mark spoke, narrowing his eyes as he scanned the barn. "Where's Callie?"

"I don't know." Arizona answered, not seeming to actually hear what Mark had said as her focus was on Caroline. She leaned in super close, like she was telling a secret. "I'm trying to get as drunk as possible for this speech I have to give at the reception because I hate public speaking and alcohol really loosens me up and-"

"There isn't going to be a reception." Caroline reminded gently. "The bride ran off, remember?"

"Oh...yay!" Arizona beamed. "That's incredible!"

"Come on." Mark placed a hand on Arizona's back, steering her out of the barn. "I'll drive you back home."
