《Political Relations (Book I of the BWWM Political Series)》A Woman Scorned

Lucille had over 10 missed calls from Oliver. She was too busy to deal with whatever it was he needed. Him coming to her rescue all the time was getting to her. She didn't want to depend on him in that way. Not anymore. Her getting drunk made her vulnerable but it wouldn't happen again.

Her love for Oliver was affecting her decision-making when it came to doing the job she was hired to do.

Similarly, a call from Anne Katherine on a normal day was okay but a few days away from the election wasn't something she could deal with right now. Lucille didn't have time to sit and drink tea and talk about all the kissing and hugging and talking she does with Shane.

She pressed the reject button for the third time.

"I need 3 interns please", Lucille yelled into the ballroom better known as the call center.

People were literally knocking each other down trying to get to her first. All of them were still trying to prove themselves especially since Oliver was going to win. A job offer to work on the governor's staff after their hard work as interns would be nice.

Lucille turned around to see a crowd of people behind her. She hand-picked three people. An asian girl, a white guy, and a black guy. Everyone else trudged back to their other tasks.

She pulled out three envelopes.

"Get this to 3 different news stations. Good news stations that people actually watch. Don't disappoint me."

"Yes ma'am", they all said in unison, each taking an envelope before scurrying away.

Not taking a break, Lucille dialed up the caterers on her work phone. "Yes, I'm calling to triple check the dishes and amounts for the dinner this Tuesday."

"Lucille", an all-too-familiar voice called from behind her.

She muted the speaker on her phone. "Anne Katherine, what is it? I'm extremely busy right now."

All the blood flushed from Lucille's face as she realized what Anne Katherine was showing her on her iPhone. Anne Katherine started scrolling to two more photos. She ended the call with the caterers. Surely it could wait.

Lucille had a brisk flashback to the day those photos were taken.

Oliver was under the impression that she was asleep but she could hear every snap of his cell phone's camera. She recalled jokingly calling him a creep.

"We should talk in my office", Lucille offered.

"I should humiliate you here in front of everyone just like you've humiliated me", she rebutted. "I thought I could trust you."

"Let's just talk about this in my office."

The walk to the office was tense, awkward, and embarrassing for Lucille. But Anne Katherine was always one step ahead. She had an agenda. And Lucille wasn't a stranger to this fact.

Lucille took a seat at her desk. "Sit please", she asked of Anne Katherine.

"I'm not one of your clients, I'll stand."

Lucille nodded.

"I'm going to ask you some questions and I think you owe it to me to be blunt and honest."

Lucille nodded.

"So how long has it been going on?"

"Emotionally since I starting working here. Sexually only for a few months. And it's over now."

"How many times did you have sex?"

"Only a few times", Lucille answered.

"A number would be nice."

"4", Lucille lied.

"Did you kiss during?"

Lucille nodded steadily.

"Did he use protection?"

"Sometimes yes, sometimes no", Lucille answered, getting extremely uncomfortable as if getting even more uncomfortable was a possibility.

"Did he pull out?"

"Enough", Lucille raised her voice. "What is the purpose of this?"

"I asked Oliver these things and I wanted to know whether or not he lied to me.

"Well, I'm sorry but this is between you and Oliver."

"Actually, it became between me, Oliver, and you since you decided to spread your legs for a married man."

A lump had formed in Lucille's throat and she remained quiet.

Anne Katherine persisted.

"I just have one more question", she looked down and fidgeted a bit. "Do you love him?"

"No, it was never that serious", Lucille uttered. A deep feeling hit the pit of her stomach immediately. She was still madly in love with Oliver. No amount of hugs and kisses and talks with Shane would change that.

Tears formed in Anne Katherine's eyes. "Well he sure as hell loves you. A whole lot."

Lucille remained quiet.

"When I asked him, he said yes but I thought he was saying it to spite me. But then the way he talked about this affair, this fling. He loves you", she said her voice apparently cracking. "And he's not ashamed of it."

Lucille sat at her desk, physically hurting from what was unraveling before her.

"You've made him happier than I ever have", she admitted. She took a tissue off of Lucille's desk.

"Last night I threatened him by pulling the divorce card again. He wasn't even bothered."

Lucille just listened, unaware of what direction this conversation was headed in. A conversation is two-sided so more like a rant.

"A divorce is what he wants. A divorce would make him happy. And what would that do for me huh? I'd be left an old, bitter, divorcée."

Lucille interjected. "Anne Katherine, you're still young and you're beautiful and-"

"I'm still talking", she said cutting off Lucille. "I would have no life after Oliver. So I'm going to make a life with him. I'm going to milk this whole 'governor's wife' thing. I'm going to make things work."

Anne Katherine threw the tissue away in the trash bin.

"So, I'm sorry but you can't have my husband. Because he doesn't deserve to be happier than me. And neither do you."
