Emily's P.O.V
50 missed calls. All from my dad. I haven't gone home for days. I know that 50 wouldn't seem like a lot but it is still weird. I just don't want to go home. I don't need him to hurt me again.
*Flashback*
I was 15. Dad has been weird lately. His friends are always at our house, they're always drunk.
I walk through the front door, the smell of whiskey fills my senses as always.
"Hey your bitch is back" His friend shouts.
"Emily, do you have any idea what time it is!?
"7 O Clock"
"Where the hell were you?" Every night was like this but it always got worse. Always.
"I was at the library studying for my French final"
"Shut the fuck up! Your voice annoys me"
I start to go upstairs before a bottle was thrown at me but missed by only a few centimeters. Glass shattered all over me. My dad was always an angry drunk. "Did I dismiss you?"
"Dammit I missed" He and his friends say laughing. I quickly run upstairs, blood rushing down my arm and pieces of glass stuck in my arm and shoulders.
I should've left long ago. He always treats me like shit.
*Flashback over*
I stand in front of Garrets mirror, just staring at myself. I can still see the faint scars on my arm. Even during the summer I like to wear sweatshirts so no one sees. Some people would take it the wring way. Some people accused me of cutting but I'm not like that.
Garret comes out of his bathroom in nothing but a towel. His eyes find mine through the mirror. I quickly shield the scars.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing"
"Emily don't lie to me"
"I-I'm not lying"
"Yes you are. Emily if I could read your mind I would now just tell me whats wrong" He says sternly.

"I don't want to talk about it" I say sternly. He can't know everything. My memories reach way farther. He raises his hands up in defense. His eyes rack down my body. He notices me holding my arm lightly. He slowly stalks over to me removing my hand from covering my arm.
He releases a small growl. His eyes changing color.
"Why would you do that to yourself?"
What he asked shocked me.
"Answer me" He demands.
"I didn't do this to myself" I whisper. His eyes fill with sorrow
"Who?" That one word held so much sadness.
"M-My dad" I stutter. I haven't seen him in over 2 weeks. I've mostly been borrowing Garrets clothes but he didn't mind. He said that I looked "Sexy" In his clothing.
"And don't you dare say you're sorry because I didn't even live in your state" A small tear rolls down his eye buy I am quick to wipe it away.
"Stop" I say but he just shakes his head and pick me up, putting my legs around his waist, walking over to our bed.
"How?"
"He threw a whiskey bottle at my head but missed. He was always an angry drunk" I say not going into detail. His body was shaking with anger.
"I don't want to move things too fast or force anything on you but I have to do it. You're moving in with me, I don't care how young we are, I need you away from him. I couldn't live with myself if anything happened to you."
"I need to go back and get my stuff"
"No. As alpha I have a lot of money. I will buy you new clothes, you don't need to go back."
"No, you don't understand. There are pictures of my mom at that house, and all of the things she got me, I can't just not have those. Plus, I know it sounds kind of embarrassing but she gave me this teddy bear that I still sleep with."

"It's not weird, but now you'll have two teddy bears." He says referring to himself.
"So are you gonna let me go back and get some of my stuff?"
"Well getting your stuff means that you're agreeing to stay here at my house, than yes. But we have to make sure that your dad isn't there."
I quickly hug him, but he moves his arms around mine keeping me still, trapped against him.
"Dammit Garret I'm not going through this again, Let me go!"
"Nope"

Flashback: Siren Song
The year is 1969. Yancy Lazarus—bluesman, gambler, future world-class mage and fix-it man—is just a dumb, unlucky kid serving with the 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines in Vietnam. With just a few weeks left to go until Yancy gets shipped back to the States, he’s just trying to keep his head down and avoid a body bag—no mean feat in Nam. But when his squad is tasked with conducting a routine patrol deep in enemy territory, everything goes to nine kinds of hell, and he quickly sees his chances at survival slipping away. When the radio operators start to pick up some funky, dirty ol’ blues all the way out in the backcountry, it’s a nice change of pace. At least until the men in Yancy’s squad start losing their minds, turning on each other with murderous intent as the music works its deadly power within them. Convinced it’s some kind of new psychological warfare initiative, the squad leader forces the men to push deeper and deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, obsessed with locating the music’s source. What they find, however, isn’t some new technology, but an ancient spirit awoken by the terrible war. Even worse, the music is changing Yancy too, awakening something buried inside of him. Only one thing is certain, nothing is ever going to be the same.See how it all began … *** PRAISE FOR SIREN SONG:Hunter's writing is as low-down, gritty, and insidious as the blues Yancy Lazarus loves. Just like the mysterious music drifting through the jungle toward Yancy's squad, Siren Song will get under your skin and sink its hooks into your mind. —eden Hudson, Author of Halo Bound (the Redneck Apocalypse series) *** Hey everyone, this is James Hunter. This story isn't a full length novel--its a novella length work (25K words), and is part of my Yancy Lazarus series. Its already free on Amazon, so I thought I'd post chapters here for the good folks of Royal Road. If you don't want to wait for updates or would prefer to read it on Kindle, you can pick it up for free here: https://www.royalroad.com/amazon/B01066TLC0
