《Blood to Love | 3rd year》3- Silence

I awoke to Pansy Parkinson and Daphne Greengrass giggling in the corner of the dorm while putting on makeup in front of their vanity's. I sat up and they ignored me and continued talking about boys, obviously. What else did I expect of them?

I threw the covers off of my leg and hopped off my bed. I then rushed over to my small closet, grabbed my Slytherin robes and headed for the bathroom, still going altogether unnoticed by the two Slytherin girls.

In the bathroom, I changed into my school attire, brushed my teeth, brushed out my hair, and put on some makeup. I stared at myself in the mirror, frowned, and then walked out to my dorm. Pansy and Daphne were already gone. Quickly, I checked the time and groaned aloud.

Great, I missed half of breakfast.

I grabbed my bag and threw on some black flats and hurried all the way to the Great Hall. Blaise was sitting at the Slytherin table alone and so I joined him in the seat across.

Rapidly, I crammed a pancake down my throat until Blaise stood up and motioned that breakfast was over. Blaise scolded me when I grabbed a handful of grapes before following him out into the hallway.

"Y/n, how are you late on your first day?"

"Shut up, Blaise," I said, my voice muffled by my mouthful of fruit.

He grinned and handed me my schedule that he retrieved for me during breakfast. It looked as though today we both had divination first. I was lucky to have a friend, especially since I had no idea what to expect from this class.

We headed to the steps and quickly walked up, trying our best not to be late for our first lesson. A crowded group of Slytherin students were ahead of us in the hallway and we followed them, climbing up swirling steps. We all looked around confused until one student started climbing a ladder that was connected to an odd classroom. We followed the students, climbing up the ladder, Blaise behind me to block anyone else from looking up my skirt.

We finished climbing the ladder and entered a warm, crystal-filled room. There was an overbearing smell of burning wood and the tables were cracked and burnt in a few different spots. Blaise and I hesitantly walked further into the room and sat at one of the circle tables consisting of random objects messily laid upon the surface.

A woman with large, round glasses strolled in a few minutes after the class got settled into their chairs. Her eyes looked immensely big and her hair was curly and fluffy, almost as big as Hermione Granger's. She talked very fast and most of it was complete nonsense that had everyone zoned out within a few seconds.

Blaise looked over at Pansy sitting across the room messing with the glass tea cup in front of her. I waved my hand in front of Blaise's face causing him to snap back into reality. He shot an apologetic at me and I sighed. It was a terrible idea for him to get involved with Pansy, but who was I to stop him? Only his best friend.

For the rest of class Blaise made jokes and I attempted — but failed miserably — to stifle my laughter. The things Professor Trewlaney were stating were useless. The first day was always the worst. We learned nothing and heard life stories from all of our professors.

When the bell finally rang for class to end, we packed up quickly and practically sprinted out of the door, quickly climbing down the ladder.

We then went back to the common room, as we had a free hour for the time being. In the common room, we kicked off our shoes and finished our small divination homework ("What are the main courses you are taking this year in divination?").

Since we didn't pay attention in class, we looked in our divination textbook and wrote down all the courses listed in the table of contents. It was one of the most purposeless assignments I had ever completed. I just hoped assignments were this easy in the future. Each year my motivation decreased, and difficult assignments wouldn't help cure that issue.

When Blaise finished up, we played Wizards Chess for the remainder of the class period and until the bell rang once again. We placed the shoes that we kicked off back on and walked outside excitedly.

Hagrid, our care of magical creatures teacher, was leaning against a tree, welcoming the students who were congregating outside. We had this period with the Gryffindor's and Draco; our two biggest rivals.

Hagrid treated us Slytherins the way Snape treats Gryffindors — mostly evilly.

During this lesson, Hagrid mostly talked about the main subjects we will be taking within the magical creatures unit, as did almost all the teachers. He said something about a "buckbeak" and that's when I officially zoned out. The amount of times he became sidetracked easily bored me.

After what felt like multiple hours had past, Hagrid dismissed us. We headed inside and scrambled to lunch. Blaise and I sat down and grabbed mountains of food for our plates. We sat there and ate in a comfortable silence as we chewed and grabbed more food. People would randomly shoot us odd glances but we kept to ourselves and devoured our lunch.

I looked around and noticed Malfoy and Pansy sitting at the other end of the table. Pansy was leaning into Draco, though he kept sliding slightly further from her when she would look away.

I glanced over at Blaise's expression and he seemed upset. I mean he was practically in love with Pansy and she was clearly attempting to gain someone else's attention. That must've been hard to watch. However, instead of saying anything about it, I decided to change the subject.

"What's our next class?" I asked, truly wondering.

His eyes traveled to his schedule and then peered curiously at mine.

"I have History of Magic and you have Muggle Studies." He frowned.

"Blaise, its fine. We have to go without each other at some point in our lives," I said and laughed on the outside, but I was still slightly upset deep down. We weren't ones to venture off and find other friends. We didn't need to because we had each other. It just wasn't enough this time.

He forced a smile and continued shoving food in his mouth. I finished eating and peered around the Great Hall. Proffesor Snape was slurping up some soup and chatting with the small Proffesor Flitwick while Proffesor McGonagall shook her head at whatever was escaping their lips. She never was one to tolerate inappropriate behavior.

I then turned my gaze back to the students and noticed Harry, Hermione, and Ron all engaged in a tense conversation. I was interested in what they were saying but the bell rang and I pushed all my intruding thoughts aside, focusing on finding my next class.

I walked down the hall, split up with Blaise and entered the Muggle Studies classroom. I sat in the back and a variety of students approached the classroom, wearing Slytherin and Hufflepuff robes. Hufflepuff's were ordinarily kind — this class should go well.

After sitting down, I picked at my nails and waited for the class to get started while a Hufflepuff named Ernie Macmillan sat next to me. Sleep soon took over me and I jumped when the bell rang signaling the end of class.

While packing up, Ernie informed me that we didn't have homework. I thanked him and left the room with my bag and a pile messy hair atop my head.

My last class of the day was Transfiguration and Blaise's was Potions. I headed off to Professor McGonagall's class and took a seat in the back once again. There was another empty seat next to me, much to my own delight. I flipped my textbook open, as we were instructed and started reading page 2. I was actually very interested in transfiguration so it was vital to pay attention in this class if I want to actually learn something.

The door opened to the classroom and my head whipped around to meet eye contact with a certain blonde git. I scoffed at his dramatic, late entrance and my eyes and went back to the textbook. That was, until he took the seat right next to me.

"Why are you sitting here?" I whispered, clearly annoyed.

"You think I want to sit here? There are no other seats, you prick."

I looked around and he was right. There was now no seats available for any other possible late stragglers. His eyes stared directly into mine as I looked around and he sighed dramatically.

"If you just stay quiet then we will get through this class," Draco assured.

I looked at him in disbelief and said, "I wasn't even talking Malfoy, you are so full of yourself. You have a problem with everyone else, but have you ever thought that you are the only problem?"

"Yes," he mumbled so quietly that I could've imagined it.

I didn't push any other conversations on him and I went back to reading. He looked over at me and I could sense him staring, again.

"Malfoy, do you want to say something or do you just find my side profile fascinating?"

"What are we doing?"

"Isn't it obvious? Read your textbook."

He nudged me in the side and I slapped his arm, very annoyed at him laying even his elbow on me. He grabbed his now red arm and his jaw dropped to the floor due to the shock. The sound of the slap had caused a ruckus and McGonagall walked over while whispers filled the room.

"Miss L/n, that was wildly inappropriate! Detention tomorrow at eight in the evening right in this room. Are we clear?"

"Professor, he hit me as well," I stated innocently.

"Very well. Malfoy you'll earn detention here as well, same time. Don't waltz in late again."

As soon as she turned her back to walk to her desk I whipped my head to the side and had an unnecessary whisper argument with Draco going a little like this:

"Malfoy! Of course you gave me detention!"

"Me? How did I do that? You slapped me!"

"Yes, but you hit me first!"

"Just be quiet and read L/n."

"Do not tell me what to do or I will aim for your face next time."

"Whatever."

After class, I raced out of there like my life depended on it and met with Blaise in the center of the hallway. We were walking to the common room while I told him the whole story about what happened over the last hour in class. He looked shocked but got distracted by Pansy and Draco in the hall. I was so irritated by looking at Draco and Pansy that I took Blaise by the arm and shoved him into a broom closet.

"What are you doing Y/n? Are you going mad?"

"Probably, but to get Pansy you must make her jealous."

"How is shoving me in a closet making her jealous?"

"Blaise, use your thick head! They obviously think we're snogging in here. Sometimes I can't believe you haven't failed a year."

He looked at me in annoyance but I sent an innocent smile.

After a little longer we left the broom closet and entered the empty hallway. I puffed up my hair to look messy and walked into the common room. Draco and Pansy caught our eyes and Pansy scoffed and flirtatiously grabbed Draco's hand in an attempt to make Blaise jealous. Draco moved her hand off of his, wearing a blank, unreadable expression on his face as we passed through.

Blaise and I laughed together and walked towards my dorm. He sat on my bed while I changed into sweatpants and a t-shirt. He ranted on and on about Pansy and I listened closely, but decided reply with anything rude.

Just smile and nod. That was my motto.

When he was done, we were off to dinner. It was the usual: eating, talking, and Blaise watching Pansy's every move. I, on the other hand, began to dread the detention set in place for tomorrow.

After the dullest dinner I've ever endured, we headed back to our common room. While in the room, Blaise and I talked, played games, and caught up on our easy first day homework. It was a relaxing evening that we felt we deserved.

After quite some time, I told Blaise goodnight and headed up to my dorm. I sat there thinking about my last first day of third year and attempted to fall asleep.

Despite my many attempts, I couldn't sleep. My energized mind and overthinking fought a winning battle, and so I went down to the common room which was peacefully quiet. I sat on the couch and watched the firewood slowly become smaller and smaller while the flames sparked a bright orange.

I started thinking about classes and my future until I heard footsteps coming down. I decided not to look, inferring that they were passing by. I was wrong.

The person started walking slowly towards the couch and sat down without looking at me. We both stared at the fire for a moment until I looked over and saw Draco Malfoy. He looked at me and I immediately turned my head back to the fire to avoid long eye contact.

"We don't have to talk," Draco stated bluntly.

"You just did," I whispered.

He smiled and — to both of our surprise — I did too. Who knew that we could be comfortable in silence? Certainly not me.
