《His Sunshine | ✓》Chapter Forty-Five - Promise

"Happy birthday, baby girl! I miss you so, so much!" My mom tells me over the phone, and I can picture the wide smile on her face.
"Thanks, Mom. I miss you too. How is everything in New York?" I ask, slowly getting up from my bed. A call from my mom is the first thing I woke up to this morning. I can't believe I'm finally eighteen.
"Oh, everything's just fine over here. Have you got anything exciting planned for today?"
"Everyone's coming over later on to celebrate. It'll be pretty quiet though I think. I didn't want a big party or anything." I stifle a yawn as I walk over to my closet to decide what to wear today.
"That sounds lovely. And how are things with Reece?" She asks knowingly.
A grin automatically takes over my face just at the thought of him. We've been together for almost two months now and I have never felt happier. "Everything with him is perfect, Mom. He's amazing."
"So he's treating you right?"
"Of course. He couldn't treat me better if he tried."
And it's true. The past almost two months with Reece as my boyfriend have been nothing but bliss. He's everything I could have ever wanted. I love him.
"Good. Well, I better let you go then. Have an amazing birthday, sweetheart."
"I will, thanks, Mom. Bye." I hang up the call and set my phone down on my dresser. Deciding that I'll have breakfast before I get ready, I start heading downstairs dressed in some sleep shorts and one of Reece's shirts. He doesn't know I have this one.
"Good morning, birthday girl!" My dad greets me as soon as I enter the kitchen and I see that he is already cooking breakfast. Pancakes, my favourite.
"Morning, dad." I smile, giving him a quick hug before going into the fridge to get the orange juice. Mack comes trots over to me then and I bend down to give him a pat. "Morning to you too, Mack."
"I can't believe my eldest is eighteen," Dad shakes his head, "I must be getting old."
"That's nothing new, Dad." I reply with a cheeky grin, taking a sip of the drink I just poured for myself.
He only shakes his head at me, "You have two much sass for nine o'clock in the morning."
The sound of the front door opening and closing alerts me that someone is here, and I immediately know who it is. I quickly put my glass down on the counter before hurrying to the front door. As soon as I see him stopped by the door as he slips off his shoes, I launch myself at him. He expects it, catching me easily and holding me against him. I wrap my legs around his waist and his hands grip my thighs as he looks up at me.
"Hi," I greet him with a smile.
Reece grins, "Hey, Sunshine," He leans up, murmuring, "kiss?" and I quickly swoop down to kiss him greedily. He feels like home. He breaks away after a few seconds and gives me an adorable lop-sided smile. "Happy birthday, baby."

My heart flutters. He's started calling me that sometimes as well. I love it. But Sunshine is still my favourite. "Thank you. It's finally legal for you to date me now."
He smiles, "It's only the sex that's illegal, Sunshine."
A bright blush takes over my face as I whisper, "Whoops. We probably should have waited a couple weeks for it to be legal, huh?"
"It would have been worth the wait," He tilts his chin up to gently kiss me again, setting me back on my feet.
"Maybe we should go upstairs and not break the law this time." I tell him quietly, biting down on my bottom lip gently.
I see his eyes flash before he groans softly, bending down to bury his face in the crook of my neck. "What have I told you about insinuating that when you know we can't?"
"That I should stop," I giggle, running a hand through his hair, "but who said we can't right now?"
"Your dad and your sister are in the house, baby," He tells me lowly, his deep voice sending a shiver down my spine.
"I can be quiet." I whisper, slipping a hand under the back of his shirt to feel his warm skin against mine. He noticeably shivers at my touch.
"No you can't," He shoots back, hands going to my waist to squeeze it, "and I never want you to be." I feel his mouth open against my neck before he starts placing slow, wet kisses all over my skin. I let my head roll to the side to allow him more access, feeling my mouth drop open. When he places a kiss on a particularly sensitive spot, I can't help the quiet moan that I let out right next to his ear.
Reece immediately freezes. He groans softly again, pulling away from me gently. He huffs, pressing a quick kiss to my lips. "Soon, Sunshine."
I huff, "Fine. Come have breakfast then please." Taking his hand in mine, I lead him through to the kitchen where my dad is still busy cooking. Bella is now sitting at the dining table, on her phone.
She looks up when we walk in, smiling, "Happy birthday!"
"Thanks, babe," I ruffle her hair as I walk passed, sitting across from her at the table. Reece says hello to my dad and Bella before taking the seat beside mine. Him and Dad start talking about his boxing and school, while I turned to Bella.
"How are things between you and Max?" I ask.
She quickly looks up from her phone. "What do you mean?"
"I mean you've had a crush on him for years and you've been best friends for months now... How are you with that?"
"We're fine. I... I like spending time with him. We're only young, so I don't expect anything to happen. But, in a few years if he admits that he likes me, I'm not going to turn him down."
"And what if you only ever stay friends?"
She pauses before shrugging, "It's only a stupid crush. It will go away eventually."

"Sunshine," Reece gently cuts into the conversation to hand me my orange juice that I left on the counter. I smile up at him and kiss his cheek quickly to thank him.
Dad serves up our breakfast a moment later and we all tuck in. The rest of the morning passes by pretty quickly. Dad and Bella give me their presents which consists of some new headphones and some clothes among other things. Reece tells me he wants to give me my present later and I don't object. I'm left wondering what it will be for most of the day.
I insist on helping Bella make my birthday cake, much to everyone's protest. But I love making cakes, so they let it slide. Reece helps my dad prepare the other food and things for when my friends come over in the afternoon.
At around one o'clock, I head off to have a shower and get ready. That brings us to now, where I am sitting in my towel on the end of my bed, once again wondering what to wear.
My bedroom door opening has my eyes finally moving away from my open closet to see who walks in. Reece stops when he sees me sitting on my bed in nothing but a towel, eyebrows furrowing.
"Are you alright, Sunshine?" He asks, shutting the door behind him and walking closer.
I huff, staring back towards my clothes, "I don't know what to wear."
Reece chuckles, walking over to kiss my forehead. "You look beautiful in anything you wear, Sunshine. It doesn't matter."
"Maybe to you, but I want to look nice." I pout.
"Just put on a nice dress or something. You have like thirty of those little dresses."
"That's an exaggeration."
"Barely."
Huffing again, I stand up and hold my towel up around me as I walk over to my closet. Staring at the dresses I have in there, I finally pull out a little yellow dress. I turn to Reece, "I want to wear this, but I'll be too cold."
"You can wear my jacket over it if you like," Reece says, referring to the leather jacket that he's currently wearing.
"But you're wearing it."
"I have a hoodie on underneath. I'll be fine." He chuckles, gesturing with a finger for me to walk closer to him.
I smile, doing as he says and stopping right in front of where he now sits on my bed so that our knees touch. He reaches his hands out to gently grip the back of my thighs just above my knees. I am hyperaware of the fact that he could slide his hands up and be touching me completely bare right now, but I don't say anything.
"Thanks, Reecey," I bend down to kiss his lips quickly and when I pull back his dimples are on full display with his smile.
"You're welcome, Sunshine. Now get changed and I'll be right back. I'm just going to grab your present from my car." He stands up and kisses me quickly before leaving me alone in my room again.
While I wait for him to get back, I dry myself off and slip into the dress. For now, I clip my damp hair up so it doesn't drip all over the back of my dress. I then check my phone and reply to a few birthday messages that I have.
When Reece walks back into the room, he has his hands behind his back. I narrow my eyes and walk over to him sceptically. "What is it?"
"You'll find out in a second. Hold your hands out and close your eyes." He tells me softly, unable to keep the smile off his face.
I do as he says, shutting my eyes and holding both hands out to him. I feel him step closer to me and take my right hand in his. He gently lifts and places it around his neck and I bite back a grin, holding onto him. He then takes my left hand in his and it's quiet for a moment. Then, I feel him slipping something cool onto my left ring finger. My heart momentarily stops.
"Open," He whispers then and I do as he says. His bright turquoise eyes are the first things I see before I slowly look down to my hand. Sitting on my ring finger now is a simple yet beautiful ring. The thin metal is wound in such a way to rest in an infinity knot. I look back up at him.
"It's beautiful," I whisper, feeling like this moment needs to be quiet. I look back down at the ring to admire it.
"Not as beautiful as you," he replies and when I raise my eyebrows at him, he chuckles, "Sorry, I couldn't miss the opportunity." I shake my head as he continues, "It's a promise ring. This is my promise to you that I will always be faithful to you and love you, no matter what. It is my promise that one day, I will replace that ring with an engagement ring. I told you I want to spend the rest of my life with you, Sunshine. I mean that wholeheartedly. I love you."
I can feel the tears coming to my eyes as I look up at him. "I love you, Reece. And I love the ring, it's gorgeous. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I'll love you forever."
"And I will love you forever, Sunshine. I felt that the infinity knot was fitting for that exact reason. I didn't want it to be too cheesy and I didn't want it to look too much like an engagement ring. I'm glad you like it."
"I love it. It's perfect."
"Just like you, Sunshine. You really are perfect. To me you are. There's nothing in this world that I want more than to spend every second of the rest of my life with you."
"I'm going to love you forever, Reece. This means you're mine forever, right?" I look up at him through tear-filled eyes, just managing to make out his face. Gorgeous turquoise eyes, a straight nose, pink lips, slight stubble, dimples. He's everything I could have ever wanted.
Reece smiles. "This means that you'll always be my Sunshine."
