《How I Survived (Zombie Story)》Chapter Fifty Six- Miranda

Miranda POV
"How can I not be guilty?! Lara went off for medicine for my sake!" Kyle says and with a small push he was trying to stand, forcing himself off the gift shop floor, Kyle rose, his tall figure was more slumped than the usual high school athlete I had known all my high school life. "Easy.. be careful," Beverley says, placing a hand on his shoulder. Kyle winces and she pulls away.
Jone sighs, "We will find her." Is all he can say, his voice deep. Kyle is frowning and digging a hand into his hair.
I was sitting in the corner, holding Lara's bag. She had left it, all of her things. Would we see her again? My best friend? Was she still alive? "That man was a cannibal." I hear Luis say.
"C-cannibals?" Kyle shouts, staring at Jone. Jone nods and walks over to the gift shop window. "The man that knew she was alive... he was eating someone else..." Luis says, reloading his gun. "Disgusting." Kyle scowls, and he grabs the pistol off of the counter beside me. "I'm going after her." He says, his voice raspy and he shoves the gun in his waistband.
"No one is gonna take my side?" Kyle asks, looking at everyone in the gift shop. His eyes fly to mines, and he paused. "Are you?"
I stand, "I'm going too." I grab the other pistol, standing beside Kyle. "I'm tired of waiting around... while my friend.. not just my friend.. but my best friend is out there... probably being tortured!" I say I tie my hair into a ponytail with the scrunch from my wrist.
"Jone... Please go with us." I say. "Her sister is out there," I say, noticing Sammy had been standing beside Emily, eyes wide with confusion.
"We shouldn't waste time... each second.." Kyle says, he was stressing himself. "Each minute.. each hour.."
"Kyle," I say, and he stops talking, and I nod. "I'm ready." He says, adjusting the bandage on his shoulder. Jone hadn't said anything, instead, he stood in the front door, as if blocking the doorway. "We will go after her... I think we should wait. It's getting dark."

Dark... pitch black dark. I had already given up.. Dark time... it was the worst time to be walking around. "Kyle.. he's right," I whisper. Kyle sits back down, slumping against the counter... Poor Kyle. The group had gone back to walking around, the gift shop fell silent as Luis and Jone went back outside to take watch.
I plop down beside Kyle and sigh. He doesn't say anything, he just smiles and chuckles, his voice raspy. "What's so funny?" I ask. "I know she's alive... I just don't want her getting killed because she... she tried to get me medicine.." He says. "She's the closest thing left to what my sister was.. Lara is like my younger sister," Kyle said.
"Kylia?" I ask. He nods and crosses his arms. "She's gone..." he said. He didn't seem to be saying it directly to me... it was more like he was saying it to himself as a reminder.
"Hey... Lara.... she's okay." I say, patting Kylie's shoulder. He winces, and I laugh.
"I'm gonna go get a fire going... Beans and hotdogs like always tonight." I whisper, and I stand. Kyle simply nods and stares off into space. I step over to the aisle of papers we used to keep the fire going.
I felt a slight pat on my shoulder. I turn to see Emily, her eyes staring back at me. "Something isn't right." She says.
I do hand signals, mumbling the words "What is it." She stares at the gift shop door and then shakes her head slowly.
Maybe it was just her. That night, I slept near Sammy. I didn't sleep, but I laid there, staring at the gift shop walls. I could hear the bugs outside the gift shop. Before the apocalypse, it was probably cars I would hear. But no, just silence.
Then, the door was being kicked open. We all rose from our laying positions, and Jone quickly grabbed his gun and stalked towards the window.

The door flew open and Jone slammed the back of his gun up the person's head and they collapsed, but another man walked in, bullets flying everywhere.
We were being ambushed. Another man cleared in and began to fire. Luis did the same thing Joke had done and slammed the back of his gun into the man's head. Then a bullet flew into the last guy, and I turned my head to see Emily was holding her gun.
The men were down, one of them dead, the others knocked out.
We knew right away... it was time to leave.
•••••••
We were walking down the road, going back to the camp. "Obviously the mask group already left.. we should see if Hunter is even there." Is what Jone told us.
"You, Luis and Emily... you guys should check and see."
So we were on the move again now. I had to get used to walking now, it seemed that Luis had to also. Emily was walking fast.
We soon were walking through the woods on the same trail that leads to the camp.
The woods finally cleared out, and the camp was a wreck. The fence had been torn down and was barely standing.
The building had huge crater-like holes in some of the walls. I began to run, curious about whether our friend was still in there.
The other did too. But we all stopped when we heard a walker groan. A walker was laying on the ground, reaching for us.
"Seems the walker herd left," Luis says, stepping beside me.
I turn to him, "You might be right... Hopefully." Is all I can say.
We entered the same double doors, finding walker bodies littering the long wide hall. Maybe did they make it out alive.
I was hopeful. We turned the corner, Emily was walking faster than all of us. After kicking at the cafeteria doors, the door refused to open.
"Maybe they left through the back," Luis says again. "Do you know the way to the back door?" I ask. He nods.
We follow him, back out the building, Emily kills a walker and I kill the one that was behind her.
The exit door was surprisingly small, "How could a big group fit through that door.." I ask, even though I was talking to myself Luis spoke up. "Maybe they all didn't survive."
I frown and finally, Luis opens the door, and I'm surprised by what I'm greeted to.
The huge cafeteria was empty, except for the tables. I silently walk in, to see a row of bodies covered with white sheets.
I look at Luis who was beside me. And he squats down and removes the sheets from the first face. Unnoticeable. It wasn't Hunter.
The row wasn't Hunter, thankfully. Maybe our friend made it out alive.. not that I doubted him or anything.
I stepped through the rows of wooden cafeteria tables, my shoes clicking. The smell of the cafeteria was the worst, it smelt of death and the grub they used to serve. I saw the double doors, the huge crates and a couple of tables had been blocking the door.
"Look." I hear Luis say. I turn around to see him holding a note. I and Emily walk towards him, and he hands me the note.
I turn the note over in my hands and read the words.
We have survived, and the walker herd has seemed to past through us. I am taking the group of survivors to ArringTon. Please tell Lara I'm alive. ~Hunter
I turn my head to Luis, "He's alive."

The Ingress Estate
Jonathon Eucole. Soldier. Scholar. Now an Initiate, the dedication without dedication, he finds himself both prisoner and master of an arcane edifice, the Ingress Estate, which can neither be escaped, nor controlled; only diverted, maintained, and pacified. This is a gothic fantasy story, set in a world in which gods and the afterlife are not only real and known, but were both established in living memory of some of the inhabitants after millennia of arcane warfare with the being who constructed the mundane reality the humans occupy. But this isn't the story of those who colonized the afterlife at the cost of their own humanity, but a somewhat more ordinary man, in somewhat extraordinary circumstances. This is also a LitRPG-lite, which means there's a system of sorts, fragments of which can be observed through Jonathon's eyes. Don't expect level-up screens, or statistics, or indeed numbers much at all, beyond those the inhabitants of the world itself apply to understanding their own reality. It pretty much doesn't matter to the story, I mention it so those who don't want to read LitRPG at all can successfully avoid it here. I don't have any particular plan here, just some ideas inherent in the genre. This is a character concept I toyed with some years ago; an old man, bright of mind but weighed down into apathy, both by his past and his responsibilities for a terrible estate that cannot be left without stewardship. Don't expect any kind of overarching plot or story, because that's really not what this is about. Also don't expect much dialogue. Or character development. Or much of anything, really, because I've planned nothing in the way of an actual book, here. Other relevant information, if you've read this far for some reason: The MC isn't super-powerful to begin with, and probably never will be. He's a veteran with some useful skills, and the insight on how to use them, so can deal with the world's ordinary threats reasonably well, but not too much beyond that. --- Currently on hiatus, as currently the story has a rather poor ratio of effort-to-personal-payoff. I may return to this once I have a clear idea of how to get the stories where I want them. I've started a more standard LitRPG using the same system. But if you like intelligence characters who cleverly min-max their classes, it probably isn't the story for you; it's the story of a rather ordinary guy who winds up in a very similar universe.
