《How I Survived (Zombie Story)》Chapter Thirty Six

"Her mother saved me."

The world spun, my head ached, someone was attacking my shoulder. The person spun me towards them. The green eyes quickly told me who it was. Kyle.

He wrapped his muscular arms around me, and I could barely hug him back.

I was still confused, shocked, and any other feeling that fit into the category. Here Kyle was, dressed like a doctor, wearing gloves, and nearly lifting me off the floor just to hug me.

Joe and Luis had been standing there like dummies, and the audience was the group of people decomposing dead bodies, the people stood there with their eyes wide and some were whispering.

Beverley managed to push past the group, and so did Sammy. I broke from Kyle's arms and wrapped my arms around Sammy. A soft squeak left her mouth and she just stood there while I broke into tears.

Even though my sister didn't know who I was, and didn't remember.. she was still my sister at the end of the day.

I had forgotten the whole reason we had come to the warehouse of death. Oh yea, to find Hunter, who was hugging his sister, his eyes wide in disbelief.

"Back to work!!" A man shouted, slamming the door open. "If there are anymore hold-ups, I'm moving some people down the line!"

Everyone scrambled. "I-I have to go now!" Sammy whispered, and ran off behind Beverley.

"Sam-" she was gone, and now Kyle was walking away too. "Kyle!" I whisper. He quickly turns, "It's not the last time you'll see us again." I tell him. His lip twitches and he turns his back to me. I didn't call aft him. He hadn't said a word to me, he had just hugged me but hadn't said anything.

Joe and Luis were leading us out the doors, more confused than anyone else was probably. It was almost hard to leave, knowing my friends were in there. Half of my friends. Where were the others? Ricko, Lucy.... And Todd? Were they dead too? Or had they escaped?

Hunter was walking with us, his sister by his side. I caught up with Hunter, and I immediately remembered the girl's haunting words.

"Your mother saved my life."

"What's your sister's name?" I ask.

"Her name is Emily," Hunter tells me. The girl was staring at the dark ground as we walked towards our small camp. "You know sign language?" I ask.

"I never had a chance to really tell you... but yea.," Hunter says, staring at me.

"What did Emily mean when she said my mother saved her?" I ask Hunter. Hunter pauses and looks at Emily. "I'll have to ask her for you." He tells me.

The only thing I can do is nod and bite back the thoughts of my mother sacrificing herself. It wasn't bad to save others.. just knowing she was dead... is... sad.

I felt a pit form in the bottom of my stomach and as soon as we got back to the camp, I lied down, my shoulders slumping, and I tried to sleep, overhearing Hunter telling Miranda how to do sign language and Emily saying random things and waiting for them to respond back silently with hand signals.

My side began to ache with a strange pain when I realized I had been digging my nails into my side.

I lied with my back facing them, Jone was sitting in a folding chair behind me, and I didn't feel like talking to him. I felt like talking to no one, so I just stared into the darkness and closed my eyes, viewing the dark void behind my eyelids.

"Lara."

I sat up quickly, panting, and sweating. I was breathing harshly, my eyes scanning the dark area around me.

"Hello?" I whisper. Everyone was asleep, even the other people in different camps. My eyes were huge, and then a fire glowed from a makeshift torch.

"It's me." The raspy voice says. The fire highlighted the sides of Luis's face. Luis was standing over me, peering into at my terrified face with curiosity.

"What do you want?" I ask, fighting back a yawn.

"Checking up on the groups..." he says awkwardly. "And...?" I ask, annoyed with his strange behavior.

"I was told to give you a blanket." He says, with that monotone voice he always keeps, he pulled a blanket from his arm, tossing me the red blanket.

I catch the blanket and slam it on the ground. "I'm sweating and the first thing you give me is blanket," I grumble, I fold the blanket up and use it as a pillow for my head.

He sighs, "I'll cut to chase." He says, folding his arms.

"Follow me." He says.

"Why should I?" I blurt. "Fine then." He mumbled and stalked away. He was so weird. He wasn't being mean, why? I wondered. I stood anyway, my legs crying out for to sit back down.

I peered at my sleeping group. Miranda had gotten all creative with her sleeping position and had elevated her feet on a folding chair. Jone was slipping in a folding chair, I don't know how he managed to do it. Hunter was sleeping beside me, his sister curled up near his legs.

I followed Luis who was walking fast on purpose. Neither of us said anything, as we approached the same building me and Miranda was reunited in. He opens the door and I follow him in.

We walk down long hallways, taking different turns, making my legs scream for me to sit down. "Where are you going?!" I whisper, my fist curling as I crept beside him.

He pushes a door open, hands me a key, and pushes me in. "Lock the door."

"Why?" I shout.

I hear his muffled voice on the other side.

"Someone else might try to claim it. You got five minutes." He quickly says.

I turn around and my eyes observe everything. A bathroom. It was a more like a prison bathroom. I locked the door and scrambled to the cabinets. Searching for keys, keys, keys, hidden doors, files, anything.

But no, just shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and other bathroom stuff.

I was already annoyed as it was, did he think I smelled horrible? I cringed, and before I even thought of taking a shower, I got on my hands and knees to look under the door to see if the shadow of his feet were still there.

But it wasn't. I threw my clothes off, and just for safety, I took the chair in the bathroom and propped it against the door, I turned the shower valves to steaming hot and quickly jumped into the shower after searching every wall of the bathroom for cameras, but there were none.

The shower felt like I was dying peacefully. The warm water hit my skin and I nearly passed out. How long had it been since I'd taken a shower? It was like a memory brought back. I washed my hair, and washed my whole body a thousand times, and jumped out of the shower, dried, and glanced into the foggy mirror.

There I was again. My hair had grown past its limits, it already past my shoulders. I slipped the necklace that Hunter had given me, back around my neck. I grabbed the scissors I spotted in a blue container and soon a pool of my reddish brown hair circled around my bare feet. My hair was cut back to where it hovered just above my shoulders.

I slipped the clothes on, and then the shoes and I sat on the floor and closed my eyes as practiced inhaling and exhaling and then a soft knock made me jump.

"Anyone in here?" A female voice asks.

I turn deadly quiet, gripping the scissors in my hand with caution, my eye went straight to the chair, which stood its ground against the door... "Hello...?" The voice says. The knock gets louder and forces myself against the shower wall, my eyes searching frantically.

"I've been waiting all night to take a shower and someone forgets to leave the door unlocked after using the shower?!" The girl complains. She slams a fist on the door and I jump. I hear her marching footsteps down the hall.

When the coast is clear, I think, I stumble out into the hallway.

I nearly scream when a hand catches my shoulder. It was just Luis. I replaced the scream with an eye roll. He was staring at me differently his brown eyes scanning my face frantically, I stared back at him, and since it was awkward I started counting the freckles on his face to myself instead of making eye contact with him, he quickly let go of my shoulder as if I had burned him.

"Let's go." And he was already down the hall with me struggling to keep up. He leads me back out of the building and back to my camp, quietly.

I lie down, my back facing him as he stood there for 4 seconds and began to walk away. "Thank you." I force myself to say, my voice nearly cracking. I hear his steps stop. I fight the urge to say something else, instead, I turn on my side to see if he was still there.

He was standing there, staring at me from the corner of his eye, his head tilted so he could see me.

I blinked once and waited for a "you're welcome" in his stupid monotone voice, but no.

No response still, just silence, he wasn't there anymore, just the night air whistling through my senses.
