《How I Survived (Zombie Story)》Chapter Thirty Five

The rest of the day was filled with angered people. We had been finally assigned to a small camp where I and Miranda sat. Hunter and Jone were approaching us, once they made it to the tent, Hunter sighed and wiped sweat from his forehead and Jone stared blankly at the ground.

Suddenly our attention was gathered to the inner gates opening. A truck was rolling in, and everyone was now. The truck opened and a man got out, another from the other seat. They walked to the back of the truck and pulled a stretcher out with a girl lying unconscious on the stretcher. Then they pulled a boy out.

The girl looked our age, the boy looked 13. "Who are they?" Miranda asks. I shrug, standing to get a better look. "More survivors I guess."

There were no attacks that day. The rest of the day we were in the eating room, sitting at a cafeteria table, eating the food we were provided, repeating the daily schedule.

Then we were back at our camp, sitting around, listening to the zombies snarling and growling dumbly at the fence that was not budging not one bit. It was already getting dark, the same dark it was one the whole entire camp was ambushed.

People went around and gave the people they trusted, a gun, and told them curfew was soon unless they were taking guard stands.

Only Jone and Hunter were given a guard schedule, so they were guided away from us to be placed where they were told to guard. I tried my best to see where they were going but it was already so dark I couldn't tell where they were taken to take guard. It was just me and Miranda.

She was laying on a sleeping mat, her head resting on the pillow and her eyes wide and staring blankly.

I didn't have anything to say, so I just sat there, as if waiting to hear gunshots go off. But nothing happened as we waited for the curfew to be called. They had set some tall sticks with cloth wrapped around the top everywhere, burning with fire for light.

Flies bothered me, so I kept swatting every direction. I never slept outside before, never slept outside near a fence with human eaters behind it. The thought horrified me and I wanted to sleep in the room I had slept in the first few nights I was here. The same room me and Miranda were reunited in.

Suddenly Joe and Luis were standing in front of our small camp area. Joe's leg was wrapped in a gauze and he had a bruise on his cheek. Luis also wore a gauze on his arm from where he had been shot during the night on a supply run.

Then a girl stepped from behind them. She had black hair, huge blue cloudy eyes, small facial features, her hair was tied into a messy bun, her face was covered with small groups of freckles. The fire from the pole highlighted the determined, frustrated look on her face.

She was short and wore baggy green military pants, she wore a black leather jacket with fur covering the ends of the hoodie and sleeve. She had the strangest eyes I ever saw, they kept squinting at me, as if trying to burn lasers through me by just staring. Her eyes were huge.

"She wants to know where her brother is," Luis tells me, staring at me with an unknown look on his face. "Who's her brother?" I ask, confused with the new person. I watch as the girl looks to Luis as if searching for an answer.

Luis turns to the girl and does strange hand signals. Then I realize the girl can't hear, the girl looks at Luis with hard concentrated eyes, "Hunter." She speaks, trying to keep her voice loud enough for us to hear. It must've been hard not knowing what your voice sounded like.

"Hunter....? Hunter is your brother?" I ask, surprised. Miranda had been sleeping so she had no idea what was happening when she sat up.

Luis makes more hand signals to the girl and she nods, quickly, her soft eyes searching mines as if saying "please... thank you..."

"He took guard." I tell Luis, "I think I saw him go that way." I point to my right at the building where dead bodies were taken.

"Come with us." Luis quickly says. I force a quick nod and Miranda is up in less than a second, scrambling to stand up beside me.

We walked across the dark field, Hunter's sister staring wide-eyed at me. "Hello." She whispers while we walk. I force a small wave, remembering she was either deaf or couldn't hear.

We approached the white brick building and the double doors opened and a strong smell attacked my nostrils. It was a putrid odor, it made my skin crawl and sent goosebumps down my skin.

Death.

It was all around us, carts everywhere with dead bodies covered in the same red bloody sheets. I felt a bad headache coming along as I watched the people working turn to stare at me.

I wondered if Beverly was here. If she still planned to bring the key. Suddenly Hunter was able to be seen, Jone by his side, near open double doors, staring off into the night with guns in their hands.

The girl broke into a run, her small voice crying "Hunter, Hunter!!"

Hunter turned and his eyes were huge. The girl jumped into a hug nearly killing Hunter. She hugged him tight, and I almost felt happy again.

Everyone was confused, even Jone was, he was standing there, his arm dangling by his side holding his gun, staring blankly at the deaf girl clinging to her lost brother. The girl stayed in his arms, crying his name and other names I didn't know.

"...Hunter... Alvin... Alvin is... Willis..."

I heard a name that only stood out to me more than anything. The girl said the name again and again and she broke into a cough. "She saved my life..." the girl said wide-eyed and pointed to me.

"Her mother saved my life."
