《How I Survived (Zombie Story)》Chapter Twenty Two

My eyes shot open when I heard the music. A radio? A radio of some sort? More people?! I sat up beside Hunter, who was driving. I hit my head on the seat so fast that Hunter hit the brakes.
Hunter raised a hand for me to be quiet.
"Please!" The voice said.
"My name is Lola Arringhall, and I'm with my group, we are trapped in the radio station, in Lakewood town! Please..." The female voice shouted.
I and Hunter looked at each other. The radio lost connection, and I quickly adjusted the knob.
"Please! If anyone is out there!" They say. The radio loses connection again. I look at Hunter. "We have to help them," I say.
••••••••••••••
"We can't save everybody," Jone says.
"Why are you like this?!" I ask.
"Listen." He says, cutting me off. "This is the last time we take anyone else in." He says, staring at me with dark brown eyes.
"Fine," I mumble.
We decided to make camp at a small gas station, the store was empty, however. I sat down on a small chair and opened the small bottle of water, that Hunter gave me not to long ago.
Beverly stumbles out of the van, Marvin behind her.
"We want to know where we are going." She says.
"So far, LakesWood," I say, as she stands in front of me, holding Marvin's arm. She raise an eyebrow, "Ghost town? Radio station hills? Why?" She asks.
"Someone there needs help," I said. She looks at Marvin. "Fine." She whispers annoyed at him.
"Could you please take us to the safe zone?" She asks.
"That's where we are headed, next," I mumble.
"We can't wait that long!" She shouts.

"Then walk." A voice says, and we turn to see Lucy standing there. Beverly shoots me an angry glare, and she walks back to the van.
Lucy tugged at her choker and snickered. Jone steps out of the gas station and walks to the van.
"Leaving in 3 min." He calls to the group.
We all pile back into the van. It was already getting dark. The van started down the empty highway, of cars that just sat there, motionless.
I was sitting on the small seat of the huge traveling van, looking out the blinded window. Everything was different. Kyle was sitting beside me, staring at his fingers, Ali was reading a book, Lucy was filing her black painted fingernails, Ricko was sleeping but holding his gun, Marvin, Todd, and Ali were all sitting on the other small seat just causally staring out the window.
Hunter and Jone decided to take the driver seats.
The van pulled to a stop, and Jone pulled the curtain back. "It's your turn." He says, waving me over. I stand, and we both trade spots.
"Stay awake." He reminds. I roll my eyes and nod. I sit in the driver seat and look over at Hunter, who was sleeping. It was already dark, the headlights cast over the fields. It was scary. Driving was easier than I thought it would be. The hardest part. Was driving while walkers walked around.
I sighed and sat up straight and began to drive.
After 15 minutes of driving, I checked the map and sighed. My eyes felt heavy. I tapped my fingers on the staring wheel, and saw the walkers on the side of the road, their attention drawn to the van. Too bad the van was too fast for the slow one to chase.

I closed my eyes but quickly opened them. Stay awake... I told myself.
"Hi."
I jumped and hit the brakes. Ali was standing behind the curtains. She sat on the van floor beside me, as I calmed myself, and kept driving.
"Why aren't you getting sleep...?" I ask, forcing a yawn down.
"I couldn't... I never sleep anymore.." She says. I looked in the mirror and saw her sad face.
"What do you remember?" I blurt. "Remember what?" She asks, looking up.
I drove past an abandoned police car, "Before the apocalypse started." I say.
"I don't remember anything. But just waking up. In a store that was boarded up." She whispers.
"And... I remember the walkers... And how Marvin saved us." She says.
I nod. "So.. That's all you remember..?" I ask, finally yawning.
"I think.." She whispers, looking down. I nod. She goes back behind the curtains.
"Lara." A deep voice says. Kyle was standing behind the curtains now. "It's my turn to drive."
"Ok."

Ghostified City
‘Ghostified City’ is a post-dystopian sci-fi tale, set in a fading world that might be a future version of ours, running out on autopilot into oblivion. Adaman Yimmand is a simple robofactory operator in The City who's working with robots and machines every day. He doesn’t even realise that he might not have met another actual human being in years. Everything begins when he breaks his routine for once and enters a bar where he meets Evelith. This pesky other person does not let him go after he has had his -rather terrible- beer, because according to her actual humans are much rarer than he’s aware of. And from then on ‘the genie is out of the bottle and won’t get back in’, to use her words: Adaman meets more people, and gradually he has no choice but to accept that the reality of The City is not what he always thought it was, and to face the darkness of a fading humanity on the brink of self-inflicted extinction. Is there any hope left for him, and for his species? I have selected 'sexual content' and 'traumatising content' to be on the safe side, because there is a stripclub-like venue in the background of the story, and an almost-extinct humanity that has institutionalised suicide which might be disturbing to some. Apart from that it's not really a heavy 'adult' story.('Ghostified City' is my first long story in English as opposed to my native language Dutch, and an earlier version was published on my fiction blog 'Oranderra' until I stopped updating. This is a slightly altered version of the first series.)

Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course. Where else is a kid from the gutters going to find that kind of freedom in the service of His Majesty? A [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] 2021. Warnings: Second person is used in this work. Semi-Polished draft: Posted chapters are subject to revision as needed as things progress. Mild Profanity on occasion.
