《A New Beginning - Warren Worthington III (REWRITING)》Chap.8 - First Training

By the time the fire died, you and Warren were both soundly asleep. You were wake up by the noise of the door opening. You yawned, tired and noticed your hand was still nested in Warren's hair. You removed it slowly, not wanting to wake him up. You heard someone call your name and raised your heard toward the sound. Professor X was on the doorstep, smiling. He moved his head toward the hallway, telling you to follow him. You removed the blanket that was on you and put it on Warren carefully. You got up, as silently as you could, and got out.
---
"Are you sure?" You stammered after hearing the Professor's proposition. "I don't think I'm ready for that."
The Professor was looking at you benevolently. He pushed his wheelchair toward you and put his hand on your arm, like your father did when you were younger.
"You are more than ready. Plus, it is the perfect place for you to master your powers." He paused, frowning. "Don't worry about that. You're not going to hurt them." He assured you, reading your mind.
He left, leaving you more worried than ever. When you got back to the living room, many minutes after you had left it, Warren was gone.
---
The night was as bad as you had expected it to be. Sleep was flying away from you, dodging every of your attempts with horrendous nightmares. Each one had been more horrible than the last. And each time you had seen your friends get injured or die because you could not control your damn powers.
You had not announced the news to the others yet. It was stupid because you knew they would cheer you up and encourage you. They had been talking about you coming to train with them for some time now and they would be thrilled to know it was finally happening.
Tired of rolling over in your bed, still sweaty because of your last nightmare, you decided to get out of bed and go watch some dumb television show in the living room. You sneak out of the room, trying to do as less noise as you could, even if you knew Ororo was a heavy sleeper.
On your way to the living room of the first floor, you glimpsed light coming from behind the door of one of the kitchen. You stopped hesitantly and decided to take a quick look inside, to see who could be awake at this time of the night. To your surprise, you recognized your silver haired friend. You opened the door entirely and asked him softly:
"Peter, what are you doing here?"
Peter jumped off his chair, startled. The Coke he was holding almost falling on the floor before he catch it up, so fast you did not even saw him do it.
"You're crazy! You scared the shit out of me!" He muttered, sitting back on his chair.
You walked toward him and took a seat next to him. From this distance, you could see that his hair was a mess, that his eyes were red and that his hands were shaking faintly.
"What's up with you?" You inquired, concerned. "You've been acting strange lately."
You had not seen him a lot during the week to be honest. You had assumed it was because he was feeling bad about telling everybody about Warren's secret during your game of Never Have I Ever, but you were not sure of that anymore.
He did not seem to hear you. You moved a little closer to him.

"It is about your-"You stopped, hesitant about the word you should use. "Peter, is it about Erik?"
Peter seemed to remember your presence when you pronounced Erik's name. He had told all of you about it a few weeks ago. At the time he had seemed rather confident, waiting for the right time to tell Erik about him being his son.
"Did you tell him?" You insisted.
"No, no. I don't even know if I should anymore." He whispered, sadness filling his eyes. "Maybe it's time for me to leave. Maybe I've been waiting too long."
"Don't say that, Pete. You can't leave without telling him. You know what: I won't let you leave until you tell him about it. You know I can be as much a pain in the ass as you."
He laughed faintly. "Yeah, you sure can."
"If you need me for it, just tell me okay! I'm here for you." You said, smiling kindly.
"Don't give me that look! I'm not a puppy." He shoved you lightly with his shoulders, smiling slightly.
You saw right through his smile though. Peter would probably struggle with this question a long time before he would do anything about it. You wanted to help him but he had the habit of hiding his feelings behind sarcasms and it was not easy to get him to lower his guard.
"Anyway, glad to see that you and Warren are getting along." He winked at you. "I saw you in the living room earlier."
"I'm not going to talk about that." You answered, still concerned about him.
"Just know that-"He was looking straight at you, searching for his words."You're good for him."
He smiled faintly, remembering something. He finished his Coke, smiled at you one last time and left the kitchen. You decided to make yourself a tea and then went back to sleep, hoping this time you would finally get some rest.
---
The last class was finally over and you sighed in relief. It had been a long day. You did not have much sleep the night before and with the stress you had felt during the entire day, you were starting to feel as if you were going to explode.
You had told Jean and Ororo about the training during your lunch break. They had been very excited about it, going as far as planning a party to celebrate it. You cut them off, saying you did not want anything, that it was not a big deal. You had felt their curious eyes on you but you did not add anything else. They had wanted to show you around before training but you told them you did not need to and that you would meet them in the locker room on the lower ground floor, next to the Danger room, a few minutes before training would start.
And it was finally time to go. You were sweating a little and your heart was starting to pound harder. When you arrived in front of the door of the locker room, you stopped. You knew Jean and Ororo had planned something, you could hear exciting chatter coming from behind the door. You put your hand on the door handle, anxious, and opened the door.
"SURPRISE!!"
Jean, Ororo, Scott, Peter, Kurt and Warren were in front of you, clapping their hands and shouting. A banner was hanged above their head saying: "Congratulations for your first (baby) training". Training was written badly under baby in what you recognized to be Scott's shaky handwriting. You were going to say something when confetti fell on your head. Kurt appeared in front of you in a cloud of black smoke, grinning. He was holding an empty bucket in his hand.

You shook your head slightly to get rid of the confetti. You were moved by their gesture but it also made you felt even more stressed out about disappointing them.
"Smile!" Ororo shouted, walking toward you to hug you. When she arrived in front of you, she whispered: "It's going to be okay, I know what you're thinking but you're not going to hurt us."
She hugged you for a few seconds and you smiled, feeling a little better. The others hugged you too, smiling and laughing. Their happiness was slightly contagious but you still felt too stressed out to fully relax. Warren was the last to come to you and took advantage of the others not paying attention to tell you:
"You should have told me." His voice, no louder than a whisper.
"I didn't want to talk about it, I'm not even sure I want to do it." You whispered back. You were feeling bad now that you were seeing how concerned he looked.
"I'm not sure I want you to do it either." He said, putting a strand of your hair back behind your ear in what felt like the most natural gesture in the world. "It's dangerous, you could get hurt."
He was worrying for your safety. You did not think he was going to be so concerned about it. You were going to reassure him, telling him you were more afraid of hurting him, when you noticed Mystique entering the room by a door to the other end of the locker room.
"Come on, suit up!" She clapped her hand together, like some commanding officer, and everybody left to get their suit on, even Warren. She came toward you: "Don't think about it too much, Charles is sure you can do it and so am I." She gave you a reassuring smile and you left to grab your suit too.
---
"You see those big metallic robots coming at us?" Yeah, you could definitively see them. "They're called Sentinels and we need to beat the hell out of them." Scott explained to you, smiling. You could tell he was already pumped with adrenaline as he was bouncing on his feet.
You moved your eyes back to the four sentinels coming at you in the gigantic Danger room and realized what Warren meant when he said you could get hurt. It was not some harmless game, it was an actual battlefield. Your hands shook slightly and you felt Warren get hold of one, squeezing it tenderly in his hand. He smiled at you briefly before letting go of your hand and leaving with Ororo toward the closest Sentinel. Scott followed them, before going after another one. Peter and Jean took the third one. There was only one left and it was yours. Kurt looked at you and smiled:
"Ready?"
You nodded. You were already focusing on your breathing like the Professor had told you. Kurt took your left hand in his and teleported you. You landed on the shoulder of the Sentinel, high above the ground. You clutched one of the metallic bars that were in the neck of the Sentinel and when you felt steady, you told Kurt to leave. He disappeared, leaving you alone and breathless, 15 feet above the ground.
You focused on the metallic bar in your hands, fighting hard to prevent yourself from looking down. If you did, you would never be able to fight. You tried to ignore your shaky legs and laid your hand on the hard metallic neck of the Sentinel. You closed your eyes and felt electricity running underneath your hand, allowing the Sentinel to move. It did not take you long to take full control of it. Once you were controlling the Sentinel, you compelled it to attack the sentinel Peter and Jean were fighting. You sent Jean a warning in your mind, knowing she would be tune on everybody's thoughts. She heard you and warned Peter. They both got away from their Sentinel, enough for you to make yours send a huge electrical blast at it. You were going to see by yourself the damage you had done when you felt yourself losing ground in the Sentinel. You frowned: you didn't know how but you were slowly kicked out of its system.
It was something you had never experienced before and you fought for a few seconds to try to remain in control. Unfortunately, every time, you always seemed to be a losing more ground. You were going to drop it when you thought about the generator of the school. You were going to blow this thing up. You gathered all the electricity you could get from it and release it all at once in the Sentinel. You felt drained for a few seconds before taking back some electricity for yourself, fueling you up.
You heard a frightening sound: a buzzing, rattling, and opened your eyes. Spark of electricity were exploding out of the Sentinel everywhere around you. A second after, the Sentinel stopped moving completely and shut down. You were so excited about your success you did not notice you were falling down with it. You gripped the metallic bar again and called Kurt.
You heard a loud noise behind you and felt two hands touching your shoulders. You heard Kurt's voice telling you to let go of the bar which you did and in an instant you were back again on the ground, far away from the crashing Sentinel.
Your legs were shaking so much you had to lean on Kurt to stay on your feet. Jean called him and he left, making sure first you were fine. You stayed still for a few minutes, relying on the adrenaline of the fight to keep you up. Once your limbs stopped shaking, you raised your head and looked around you. Ororo was standing on another dead Sentinel, triumphant. You noticed metallic feathers coming out of its head and realized you had not seen Warren since he had squeezed your hand. You had not even seen him fly. You searched for him around the room: Jean was finishing off her Sentinel and Scott was not far away from killing his too but no Warren in sight. You were starting to get anxious; maybe he had been hurt during his fight. You were stopped in your thought by a voice behind you:
"You were amazing."
Warren appeared in front of you before you could turn over. His eyes were filled with admiration and amazement and you felt yourself blush.
"The way you made it attack another one, it was fantastic!"
You were going to answer when something exploded behind him. Warren pulled you toward his chest and made a shield out of his wings. You heard a loud noise and felt Warren struggling to stand still. When the last debris fell on the floor he let go of you. When you meet his eyes again, you realized he was looking at you as if you were the most beautiful person he had ever seen in his life.
You vaguely heard something above your head, like a loud blast, before getting knocked over by something hard and heavy. You heard yourself scream in pain, your legs collapsing under you. Strong arms caught hold of you and put you back on your feet. Your head was hurting like hell. When you put your hand on the spot where you had been hit, somewhere above your forehead, something sticky was getting out of it. You took a deep breath, trying to numb the pain. You realized you had closed your eyes, and you opened them. Everything was blurry and it made you feel terribly dizzy. You heard Warren saying your name, he sounded terrified. You wanted to say something to reassure him but you could not seem to find the strength to talk. With difficulty, you moved the hand that was on your head slowly before your eyes and saw only red. You felt your breath getting stuck in your throat, the pain still hitting you hard.
Close your eyes and breathe, you told yourself.
You felt a hand on your cheek and heard Warren's voice telling you to open your eyes. You leaned on his chest, breathing heavily. You just needed to focus. Already, you were starting to feel the pain go away. You breathed, again and again, slower every time. You were calming yourself, focusing on healing. The blood stopped flowing, the wound was closing itself.
Once the pain was entirely gone, you opened your eyes. The brightness took you by surprise and you blink a few times before being able to see correctly. You moved your hand back to your head and felt no trace of wound. You sighed, relieved.
"You heal?" Warren's voice was barely audible but you could hear the shock in his voice.
You raised your head toward him and looked deep into his eyes. You saw a mixture of relief, astonishment and wonder.
"The perks of electrokinesis." You whispered, smiling faintly.
You felt his thumb moving back and forth your cheek and you closed your eyes, soothed by his touch. You sighed and with the hand he had on your back, he pulled you closer to him.
"You scared the hell out of me!" He murmured, his forehead almost touching yours. His breath was tickling your lips and you realized how close to each other you were.
You opened your eyes again and looked at your hand, resting on his chest. You could not help but wonder what it would fell like to touch it, feeling his skin against yours, without the thick protection of the suit between you. His hand moved tenderly under your chin and raised your head a little, making you meet his eyes. You felt your heart racing in your chest again: he was devouring you with his eyes.
"That's so cool!"
Scott's voice got you out of our daze. You turned your head toward him. He was walking toward you, followed closely by Kurt. Behind them were Jean, Peter and Ororo. They were standing and talking further. Jean called Scott, telling him to come back but he only smiled at her. She gave you an apologetic look, and you understood that while Ororo, Peter and her were staying away to give Warren and you some privacy, Scott and Kurt were totally oblivious of what was going on between the two of you. Kurt and Scott stopped next to you and Kurt asked in his thick German accent:
"And can you heal people too?"
He seemed so excited and innocent you could not tell him to leave you alone. You looked back at Warren who was still looking at you. He did not seem to care about their presence. He moved the hand that was on your chin to rest on the small of your back, holding you close. You shifted your attention back to Kurt, trying to give him a good answer but you were distracted by Warren's hand on your back. You could feel it moving faintly against your suit, and you were starting to think he was doing it on purpose, to prevent you from focusing on Kurt. You did not see his face but you were sure he was smirking.
"I guess so, I never tried. I'll be too scared to hurt the person instead." You replied with difficulty.
"We so need to try this!" Scott roared, grinning.
From the corner of your eyes, you saw Jean coming toward you and you focused back on Warren. He was not smirking; he still had the same expression of adoration in his face. You heard Jean dragging Scott and Kurt away which made you move your head instinctively closer to Warren's. One last move from one of you and you would kiss. You did not even had the time to expect anything because you heard your name be called loudly, making you turn your head toward the sound. Professor McCoy was running toward you followed by Mystique. They both stopped next to you and McCoy started to examine your head.
"That's truly amazing! Incredible! There's nothing! Look!"
Mystique leaned forward to look at your head before smirking, her gaze shifting between Warren and you.
You blushed. Snuggling into somebody's chest in front of your friends was already something weird but in front of your teachers, it was definitely making you feel uncomfortable. Warren must have felt the same because he let go of you.
"Still," McCoy continued, "we need to do an x-ray to make sure you don't have any brain damage."
You did not protest, it was probably a good idea. You had healed before but never for such bad injury. You did not know if your body healed only on the outside. You followed the teachers out of the Danger room, looking one last time at Warren. You wanted so badly to stay with him but you also knew it would not take long before you could get back to him, and maybe this time you would not be interrupted. When you crossed the locker room, Peter was smirking and Jean was smiling knowingly.
---
As expected, nothing appeared on the x-ray: you were perfectly healed. When you left the infirmary, the professor McCoy was still looking at your scan, marveled. You went back to your room to take a shower and changed and soon after you heard knocking on your door. Warren was on the doorstep, slightly concerned.
"So?"
"All good." You smiled, finding solace in his deep blue eyes. "And you? Something hit your wings while you were protecting me."
He smirked. "You need to stop worrying about me." He had leant forward while saying that and you noticed his hands twitching. He looked away quickly and shoved his hands into his pants pockets as if forcing himself to stay put.
You frowned slightly but your interrogation was quickly replaced by a sudden fatigue. You yawned, making Warren's gaze fall back on you.
