Part 3: Fight Through
——————————
Footsteps thudded against the dust and earth. Not too far behind was another pair of feet, barreling towards the first pair. It was Floyd chasing after Jamil.
"Ehehe~ I'll tell you one thing: I may not be interested in the harp, and I don't give a damn who's winning this fight. And I especially don't give a shit about the rules, so let's have fun til one of us drops dead~!" Floyd cackled as he nearly caught Jamil, the latter of which had dodged by the skin on his teeth.
"...Gh! How'd end up being the one tailed??" Jamil mutters to himself, keeping a sharp eye over his shoulder to watch for Floyd's movements.
"Run for your life~! Bwahahahahaha!!!!"
——————————
-the day before-
Once the lunch hour had hit, and all the students had gone to the cafeteria, the teachers and faculty gathered in the headmaster's office to discuss the upcoming event.
Trein sighed as he hands over a list on a clipboard, "Vargas, here's the group list for the Beans Day event from a few of the second and third year classes."
"Thanks for that, Trein!" Vargas nods and adds the list to his own clipboard. He skims over the list of who was on which team and smirked, "I see! Well, this should be interesting..."
"Let me see." Crowley looks from the side and reads over the list as well. "Ah, they're some on different teams this time around."
"From what I gathered from the other classes, the farmers have the obvious advantage in this battle." Vargas comments. "But I guess things have shifted!"
"Well, who knows which team will come out victorious? Tomorrow will be a spectacle!"
Trein rubbed the bridge of his nose in annoyance, seeing the headmaster and coach squeal like obsessed fans. "Ugh, This is such nonsense. You've turned something traditional into a pointless dog eat dog fight....and you call this school 'prestigious'....As if. And it proves this further when the faculty doesn't take this seriously, either. What nonesuch..."
Crowley snaps out of it when he felt Trein's icy glare hit him more than Vargas. "Ahem! That's NOT true in the slightest. This matter is being taken VERY seriously! Right, Vargas?"
Vargas caught on fast and coughed into his hand, looking away from Trein's judging gaze and nods, "T-That's correct. These students are able to grow more muscle when fighting one another!"
"But if anything, it's that your mindset's very old school, Trein." A new voice interrupted. All eyes look back to see a familiar black and white coat swinging from the shoulders of a certain teacher.
Trein's eyes narrowed even further upon Crewel's arrival. "What was that?"
"The event each year's changed as the new generations come and go. Why should we bother with the same old thing with traditional standards?" Crewel chuckled. "Maybe that's why you're stuck in the past~?..."
Trein felt his hand clench in frustration and anger, but he held himself back from lashing out at the young teacher. He growled between clenched teeth, " 'Change'? Don't make me laugh. Need I remind you that were the one who started this mess in the first place? What became tradition is now a blood bath because of recklessness. I still visibly remember what you did when you were but a meager student here, Crewel."

Crowley saw Crewel's shit-eating smile still up, but the teacher's eyes darkened a tad, so he decided to step in and ease the tension, "Uh, speaking of! Hasn't it been fifteen years since the Beans Day event became a part of Campus life?"
"Yes....But unlike before, "Crewel countered, "The students are forbidden from using their magic now. It's better this way."
"I second that!" Vargas smiled. "We can't allow anybody to get hurt while training! 'Specially when it comes to his place full of kids like these! Hahaha!"
"This is no laughing matter." Trein bites back. "Need I remind you that Miss Luchessi, though the only woman on these grounds, is the only one who can keep them in check? I wouldn't underestimate her if I were any of you."
"He's right, for once." Crewel nods. "Luchessi is an extremely strong-willed student, one whom I can see myself in. She still trudges on, even when the odds are against her. And she will not let anyone on her side be left behind. It shows how sacrificial and mentally powerful she is. She may have an open heart, but this pup will bite back if anyone doubts her skills." A silence engulfed the room as they let the information about the lone NRC female sink into their heads. Each have seen how Charlie was much, much different than all the boys in this school combined. This was what made her someone to be admired and feared altogether. "...But anyways, I didn't come here to reminisce about the past." Crewel broke the silence. "Vargas, the list for 1-A." he hands over the crisp white paper.
"Thanks." Vargas takes it and analyzes it carefully, his eyebrows raised a bit once done. "Well, I'll be damned...."
"Things just got even more intense than I believed...." Crowley, who had seen the list as well, murmurs.
"Well, that's how our campus is! Tomorrow can't get here soon enough!"
——————————
Night had fallen over the dorms and the campus as everyone stayed inside due to curfew. In Heartslabyul's lounge, everyone was happily feasting.
"Rule of her majesty, the Queen of Heart no. 529, a cat must eat steak during a full moon while playing the violin." Riddle summarized as he sipped his tea carefully. "I'm glad we have one cat-beast in the dorm... lest we go against rules."
"Yea, uh..." Cater raised a finger to say something as he looked at Trey warily. The two third years were sitting on either side of Riddle, pausing to place their comments. "All I heard were squeaks from the strings and bow..." Cater even winced as he could still hear them reverberate in his head.
"Well, he's not the most experienced...but there's no rule against that." Trey shrugged lightly.
"Oh yea, speaking of," Ace and Deuce walked over to where the three were joining them to talk. "What's up with the dinner tonight? It's looks outdone! Ribeye steak, fried oysters and a liver pie slice to top it off!"
"Tomorrow's the Bean's Day event! We'll need out stomach full to keep up the energy!" Cater reminds.
"Oh yea...thanks for the reminder." Deuce nods after drinking some water. "I'm sure to cover lots of running ground!"
"If I remember...you two are on the farmer's team?" Trey perked up.
"That's right! And so are Charlie and Grim!" Deuce grins, happy to have his cheerleader on his side and not Ace's.
"And Lil' Acey is on the rebel team~" Cater cooed.

"Yea, the monster's team..." Ace shoved a piece of fried oyster meat into his mouth. "But I'm glad with goose-chasing others than the other way around!" he spoke, trying not to talk with a full mouth.
"We're on the same team, so no screw up." Trey ordered lightly.
"You got it!" Ace quickly finished the oyster meat in his mouth and swallowed before speaking again, "So, uh, question: is the dorm leader on the same team as we are?"
"No. The Primary leader and the Vice have to be on separate teams." Trey answered as he cut into the last piece of his steak.
"So, Riddle's on the same team as we are...now I really CAN'T screw up!" Deuce shook a bit.
"Exactly!" Cater slaps him on the back. "So have some caution, kay?"
"Now, there's no need for THAT right now." Trey snickered a bit.
"What's wrong with stayin' alert? Especially when it comes to guys like you~?"
"I agree, for once." Riddle answered, glaring playfully at his childhood friend.
"Riddle, you too? Man, I can't get a break...."
"We're gonna pulverize that red munchkin and all the others as much as we want tomorrow~!" Ace grinned wickedly.
"Ace, you're starting to scare me...." Cater whined. "But at least your scary's much different than Charlie's....now THAT'LL give me nightmares....Deucey, Riddle! Let's give our all!"
"But of course. 'I'm not one to back down from a fight' as Charlotte puts it." Riddle memorized by heart.
"My stamina's a 4.5 out of 5 star rate!" Deuce grinned.
"You may run like the wind, but you're as good as dead meat if you go on autopilot without your brain~." Ace mocks.
"Hmph! Don't get cocky with me, Ace!" Deuce spat.
"Okay, you two. Save the fist fighting for tomorrow." Trey laughed, stopping the two from starting something. "We need to get shuteye. But don't get too excited or you'll hurt yourself."
"Hold on! A photo to celebrate!" Cater held up his phine at a wide angle as he pulls Deuce and Riddle into the group photo, typing in the hashtags and posting the pic online in ten seconds flat. "It's online, so please like it!"
Riddle looks around the area as several students began to clean up the dirty dishes and tables, looking overhead at the clock on the wall. "It's getting late. All of you get back to your rooms. And If I see anyone with the lights still on, have fun sleeping with your head offed." After the replies back, Riddle nods and leaves for his room as he left some of the seniors to clean before bed.
——————————
Over at Savanaclaw, a few students had dotted the lounge talking in their own groups, but two in particular were not so happy with their results.
"Damn, I wanted the monster's team so badly this year...." one griped. But the second had smirked at his misfortune.
"Even if you were in the monster team, you can't chase opponents for shit since you're slow as a turtle."
"The fuck was that?! Why don't you say that again and I'll maul your ass!!" the guy was about to lunge towards the second guy until a furious roar make them halt and look over at-
"Your shouting's hurting my eardrums. Get lost or I'll roast your asses over an open fire!" Leona growled menacingly. The two students shook and whimpering, scattered. Leona clisk his tongue before lying back where he had rested and threw an arm over his eyes, trying to go back to sleep, but now can't due to the fight that occurred. Further away, Ruggie and Jack, who had been making the rounds round the dorm had just come back in and had witnessed Leona's snapping. Jack leans over to Ruggie and whispered, confused, "Leona's been pretty pissed for the whole day...why's that?"
"Eh, he got told he's required to be in the event tomorrow..." Ruggie put it short. "The Beans' Day thing is one of the 'compulsory' sport subjects. And due to Leona skippin' out on lessons so much, he got forced into this thing and he had no say in the matter..."
This made Jack raise an eyebrow. "Huh? But he's good at sports! Why's he acting like it's the end of the world??"
"....Lemme put it this way, Jack...." Ruggie cracked his knuckles. "There's a handful of people who are good at something they hate....and well, because of this, I'm getting my meals paid for me for the next three days~. You and I may be on the monster team, but Leona's flying solo with the farmers... and by ruling, the predator shall become the prey for this one glorious day. Kinda give you chills....not!"
Leona whipped his head over at the two whom were talking about him and spat, "That ain't happenin' anytime soon, not even in your wildest dreams!"
"Oh! Sorry, did you hear all that~?" Ruggie teases.
"To repeat what you said, the farmers will get stalked by the monsters. But prior to the original lore, farmers can turn tables on the monsters as well. So if I were you I'd watch your back unless you want a mouthful of beans." Leona challenged.
"Then, the lyre will be guarded, I promise." Jack vowed, mainly to himself. "This thing's all about raw power, and as part of this dorm whom will rely on it, I'm putting in everything I can. Not one farmer will be safe from me!"
"Huh, making a vow so early? Well, points to you on tenacity...but enough with the antics and hit the sack." Leona nudged his head towards the rooms.
"You got it." Jack nods and runs off.
"Ugh, he's so damn hyper...like a dog you unleash at the ball park only to run in circles...." Leona grumbled as the last few students fled to their rooms for the night. He trudged towards his own quarter, Ruggie following.
"Leave it to me to make sure he's drawn far away so you don't get targeted~." Ruggie snickered, already formulating attack plans.
"And do that properly or you can kiss your three-day lunches goodbye." Leona threatened.
"Yea, I know!"

The last few customers had left the Lounge as several students began to clean the place from busting tables to sweeping the floors. Azul stretches his arms, sighing tiredly.
"Well, that's the end of our shifts for the day. Let's retire to our rooms. Tomorrow will be a long day so get as much rest." After receiving a few replies and silent nods from the cleanup crew, Azul walks around as Jade kept pace with him.
"This year is different teams."
That one comment made Azul think back... "First year, I got snatched by someone on the Monster's Team not long when the war began...and as a result, I had one-on-one lessons with Vargas....I won't let that go!!!" he snapped. "All the humiliation and pain in my body I endured!....I was careless that time, but now's the year to be cautious. And my results prove it further~...."
"And as your adversary, I look forward to our battle." Jade agreed.
Azul chuckled darkly, "Enjoy your ease while it lasts, bu- hold on, where's Floyd?" Azul had noticed just now the disappearance of the second twin and looked around the Lounge to find him.
"He's on one of the sofas." Jade answered, pointing out the obvious pair of gangly legs dangling off one of the armrests. Floyd laid in the center of the couch, hat off his head as he looked up at the ceiling in exasperation.
"Ugh, this is bullshit....I'm just gonna sit out the thing tomorrow...." he moaned.
"You seemed happy for this event a few days ago....sometimes, I don't understand you...." Azul sighed in confusion.
"I'm just jealous of you two." Foyd sits up on his elbows to look at them properly. "You got different sides this year! I got the same one like last time....I was looking forward to being a chaser, not a chasee!"
"Ah, so THAT is why your mood turned sour." Jade nods. Floyd nods back, continuing,
"I tried to get someone on that team to trade spots with me, but I got caught and my ass handed to me." Floyd griped only to flop back down on the couch in defeat. "To hell with it, I'm sleepin' in..."
"......Well, that's unfortunate.' Jade already had a plan in mind. "I, for once, looked forward to being on the team with you this year around."
"Well, we're always together!" Floyd turns his head to the side to face his brother, who kneeled beside him. "Don't see the difference here!"
"Ugh, if only Floyd would go back to normal when tomorrow gets here...." Azul mutters to himself. He spoke up with, "You're going to get points deducted if you get caught slacking, and go through what I did with Vargas."
"Eh??? That makes me more irked!!" Floyd scoffed, unbothered.
"Well, at least show up for attendance and then go off and be on your lonesomeness." Azul offered. Floyd hummed to himself indecisively, but Jade backed up his boss.
"He's right. There's no rules in the fight. Why not hide in an area of the woods you're less likely to be spotted in? That's what a moray eel is good at, no?" Floyd was still indecisive, leaving Azul walking off with a slouch.
"Well, that's that. He can't escape the hell of one-on-one with the monstrosity that is Vargas."
"Well, we've one last choice and that's to leave him be. Who knows? Maybe he'll be back to normal soon!"

Kalim skips around the courtyard to make sure everyone was in their rooms for the night before heading there himself. But was stopped seeing a familiar face.
"Jamil! You're not in bed yet?"
"Funny. I was about to ask the same thing." he nods.
"I'm aware, but I'm too giddy for tomorrow!....Huh? What's cooking?" Kalim stops to sniff the air. "Is that for tomorrow?" He points to the case in Jamil's hands.
"Yes. Suitable for something outdoors. Try and share with the others if you can."
"No problem! Can't wait to see what it is!"
"I'm not gonna be able to take it with me, so don't forget it tomorrow." Jamil places it in the center of the table with a sticky note with Kalim's name on it.
"Oh, by the way, different teams, right? Haven't played tag in such a long time! This is gonna be awesome!"
"I second that." However, when Kalim's back was turned, Jamil's smile darkened a bit, knowing his one-time plan would be a hit.

"Stretches before bed can help loosen any stiff muscles and increase blood circulation." Vil instructs as he led a few students in yoga in the lounge. "It will also activate the parasympathetic nervous system so you can obtain better rest." he goes around to check each student. "You'll need plenty of energy for tomorrow, so make good use of sleep, okay?"
"Understood!"
"Now for the lower body, sit on the floor, press your feet together and bend." the students do as told.
"Agh! V-Vil! I can't do this!" Epel wasn't even past the halfway point in the stretch when he wanted to throw in the towel.
"That's because your position is awkward. Loosen the hip flexor."
"Even if you tell me, I can't just- Hey!!! That hurts!" Epel screamed as he felt Vil push on his back with one hand.
"Monsieus Hime Ringo, you always run into trouble...." Rook sighs. "Fre not! Follow these guidelines and you'll reah tremendous results! Like so!"
"....whoa, Rook! you got your torso to the ground!"
"You see? Don't doubt your superiors! Especially Milady! Her leadership is one to be desired!"
"Rook, care to answer something? Why are your legs bulkier?" Vil approached.
"Oui! I've increased intensity for monthly training before the event!"
"HUH?! You pushed your training just for this one day?!" Epel's jaw dropped.
"Vil's on the opposing team, but I've looked forward to it. I will fight him with all that I am!" Rook boasted.
"Well, you always say preparation is key when it comes to hunting." Vil recalled.
"But of course! With moi on the monster's team and you two with the farmers...I can still picture that moment whence you both fall at my hand! I don't think I will ever sleep!"
"You don't know that yet~. But good luck on the chase for me~." Vil challenged a swooning Rook. "You may even come to regret it...."

8 183Fallen
Hundreds of years ago, the servant god Elsyn declared that they would destroy humanity entirely, explaining it as their duty as humanity’s peacekeeper. When the gods saw it fit to send someone to oppose the fallen servant, Iztris—the gods’ own servant and follower—visits Cheryn. Iztris requests the aid of Alyson and Jacob, the oldest two heirs of Cheryn and the only ones given the gods’ offer of the ‘assurance of victory,’ and the heirs agree. There will come a time when humanity does fall—but none of them would allow that to happen by the hands of a being just as flawed as mortals. I recommend reading the story by volume, instead of by the order the chapters were posted. This story was beta read by Mad Sadie. Many thanks! Please note that some characters use different pronouns depending on the chapter’s view and the speaker. Iztris, for example, is referred to with neutral pronouns by Elsyn (in most cases) and themself, and after being introduced as such they are referred to with male pronouns by Alyson and Jacob.
