Part II: The Real Fun begins!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Man I'm starting to like this game! It's much like capture the flag paintball back in my hometown! Where's a paintball gun when you need one?!" Charlie ranted while she walked with the others.
"Paintball? Sounds fun!" Cater chimes. "We're you good at it?"
"Oh, I was more than good! I was an assassin on the field! I'd take out ten opponents in under five seconds, and they never see it coming! Hell, on the high school paintball team, they called me 'Eagle Eye Luchessi'! Not to brag or anything...!" She blushed embarrassed.
"Well I hope that one of these days we may get to see you out there." Jade commented. "By the way, we Farmers team are supposed to retrieve the harp in the coliseum, but I need to get a bean shooter too to survive."
"Are you saying you're going to steal our bean shooter!? I won't give you them!" Grim ran up to protect the only shooter they had.
"Oh, please. Of course not."
"But, there's a high chance of enemy's ambushes around the supply box points." Cater reminded. "There's no guarantee we'll get what we want too. We need to make a proper plan to go to the supply point."
"You're right. For that, I have an idea.... no, more like a guess. There's this person called 'Smith'....maybe he'll spare us a Bean Shooter.
" 'Smith'? Were there any students named Smith?" Cater turned to Charlie, who shrugged in response.
"I have information about his location from a certain person, so I'll guide you." Jade leads the way.
"Hmm, well if it's Octavinelle Dorm's vice leader, the informant, saying so, then I'll trust you." Cater agreed. "We're not enemies, for now anyway."
"Thank you very much. Now, before we go to that location, can we please stop by the Botanical Garden? There's something I want to get there before a Bean Shooter."
"If we go to the Botanical Garden, we can maybe get some emergency foods! Okay, let's depart!" Grim hops.
"Grim, how hungry are you?" Cater frets.
——————————
"We arrived at the Botanical Garden! But...." Cater sniffed the air a few times. "Don't you smell something strange?"
"It's like oriental, and spicy more than strange, it's a smell that kicks your appetite....yes?" Jade followed.
I smelt the air too. It smells like barbecue almost...
"I don't know, but it's a smell that makes me salivate!" Grim smiles. "The smell is coming from that way! Let's go and see!" He hopped out of Charlie's arms and started to run.
"Grim, be more in alert! It's maybe the monsters team's trap!"
"Get back, you stupido gatto!" Charlie runs right behind him, aiming to catch him, Jade and Cater following behind.
——————————
Charlie, Cater and Jade slowed down as they saw grim halt in the TEMPERATE ZONE place. "The smell is coming from around here!" Once he turned the corner-
"Oh, what's up guys? Did you come here because of the smell?" Kalim was by a set up grill, with a serene smile. Jade and Cater were taken back by what they ended up following.
"What in the...?!" Charlie was starting to question ALOT of things. The two beside her were about to Throw hands, but Kalim stopped them.
"Whoa! W-wait a second before you throw those beans! I'm in the farmers team too!" He showed his orange badge as proof.
"You're right. I see that you're wearing an orange patch." Jade confirmed.
"Are you alone Kalim? W-wait...So the smell that has been drifting around here is because....?"
"Smell? Ah, this is a Shawarma!" He nodded to The grill he was at.
"Shawarma?" Charlie asked.
"A dish from the Land of Hot Sands where you mix lamb and chicken meat then stick it to a iron skewer and roast it, right? Other countries call it 'Kebab'."
"Oh, right, you call it that in your lands!"
"But why Right in the middle of a battlefield!?" Charlie asked.
Kalim paid no attention to her question. "You roast the meat around, then add some vegetables and pickles then you'll eat it wrapped in bread. It's delicious! You guys go eat too."
Cater looked around the area to see a small group gathered eating the food Scarabia's lead prepared. "...now that I look around, there are many guys from farmers team that's sitting while eating kebab around!"
"We can't fight on an empty stomach, right?"
"Damn! Kebab is the best!"
"You see? Jamil made this as a packed lunch this morning!"
Cater's eyes popped out of his head. "Isn't it too much to be a packed lunch!?"
Jade shook his head in disbelief. "To even prepare a infrared stove to roast the meat.... as expected."
"You think so? It's normal in my house, though〜" Kalim shrugged.
"Whoo—!! It looks so good! Let me have a bite!" Grim requested.
"Okay, wait a moment. I'll roast it for you now."
Charlie tried to resist the mouth watering scent.
"Jade, isn't this-"
"Indeed. It's better if we finish our business here quickly. I'll be going somewhere for while. Please wait a moment." He turned and sped off in a second.
~~
Ruggie and another monster team player were in the Courtyard looking for the farmers.
"Hmm, look like there's no farmers team hiding around here. Let's search other places." Ruggie spoke over his shoulder.
"Good. Let's head to the Hall of Mirrors. I'll catch, and catch, and catch all of you! Hyahaha!" The student ran off.
Ruggie sighed as soon as he was out of sight. "Leona, I know you're there. There's no monster team besides me now."
Leona emerged from the tree he was hiding up in, leaping out expertly. "Damn it, why is this school has this kind of tradition? Like I'd play a game of tag in this age."
"Didn't you become in that age because you repeated class?" Ruggie shades silently.
Leona turned to eye him suspiciously. "You said something?"
"No, nothing." The hyena brushed off.
"Moreover, I'll get a deduction on my physical strength grades if I skip, it's the worst." Leona continued.
"Physical Strength grade is a required grade, so getting a deduction would be quite painful. Isn't that why I have to imitate a spy and make you, a farmers team member, to not be eliminated?" Ruggie retorts. "As a Savanaclaw Student too, I wouldn't like if our dorm leader gets eliminated right after the game starts." He smiled at the end.
"Tch....such an ungrateful brat. I'll give you the cafetaria's Special Lunch for a week if you'll cooperate." Leona bargained.
Ruggie smiled at that. "Hehe, thank you as always!"
"That's enough of the back trade. This prey's a big one, Jack!" Azul shouts.
"I said don't order me around! Senpai....you guys never learns. Even if we're in the same dorm, I won't give you mercy! Prepare yourself, dorm leader!" In a flash, jack activated the device. Ruggie was caught in a large purple-clear hand.
"What!?" Leona stepped back, scared.
"Ugh, that bug hand is, a capture Arm! Run away, Leona!"
But Azul was fast to use his equipment to snag Leona in a bind.
"Ah.....they got you." Ruggie's head dropped.
"Damn it! Jack, you, to think that you'll bare your fangs to me again after that Magift Competition. Moreover, after being the red prince's underling, now the stinky octopus's? You traitor!" Leona raged at the underclassman.
"I-It's not like that....! And, today's match doesn't have anything to do with dorms anyway!" Jack defends.
"Hmph. Barks of a defeated lion is something painful to see, Leona.This battle is my victory." Azul stuck is his nose up and away from the third year.
"Ugh..... my week's part of Special Lunch...." Ruggie sighed, knowing the deal soon went out the window as he and Leona were both captured.
" 'Happy Beans Day': the students that claims victory will gain points for physical strength grades. This is a chance to up my physical strength scores without using physical abilities!
It's a chance that I can't afford to lose!"
"Ah...your athletic abilities looked so bad after all." Leona snarks.
"Azul's flying lessons are something not to look at at all." Ruggie nods in agreement.
"I see.... so that's why you were so desperate." Jack looks at the second year.
"Shut up. Now, Ruggie. If you don't want me to tell Vargas about your fraud, you'll have to cooperate with me."
"Ugh. I feel like I'll be used more than by Leona." Ruggie whined.
"Now, let's capture more of them!" With that, the two leave.
——————————
After a few minutes, Kalim was done cooking a kebab for Grim.
"There, I've roasted the meat. Add the vegetables and pickles for topping as you like, then eat it wrapped in bread!"
"Thank you for the meal!" He dove into the savory treat. "Tasty! There's this juiciness of the spicy, yet sweet meat that leaves its aftertaste that it's so good!"
Kalim smiles. "I'll make Cater and Charlie's too! I'll roast the meat so wait just a bit."
"That actually does a pretty good...." Charlie starts wavering.
"Ah〜, no, I'll pass." Cater declines nicely.
"Don't hold back! There's still a lot of meat anyway."
"Uhmm.....please come back quickly, Jade..."
"What is it? You don't have to hurry that much."
"It's not like that....it's because the smell of the roasted meat is drifting around the building that's-"
But the sound of rustling leaves with heard too soon.
"Found you, it's a bunch of farmers team!" Jamil calls out and a swarm of monster players follow.
"They're all in here!"
"Get them—!!"
"Eh, Jamil!?"
"Funa!? Many guys from monster team suddenly appeared!" Grim drops his half eaten meal.
"You See?! I thought it would go this way! If you spread away such strong smell, it's like saying "I'm here" to them〜."
"Shawarma.... Kebab has a strong spicy smell of ingredients, once you roast it, the smell can be felt from afar." Jamil cautiously approached the group. "I intended to make Kalim a menu that makes fills the stomach, but.... I didn't think it'll go like this."
Charlie gaped. He planned it from the start?!
"It's cheating to make food as a trap!" Grim scowled.
"Anyway, let's run away!" Cater pulls them away. ()
"Like I'll let you! After them!" Jamil orders. A few of the players give chase, but Charlie was prepared. While Kalim, Grim and Cater were distracted earlier, she investigated the area for any monster players, and happen to find an untouched paintball gun lying by the wall against tool shed. And a canister of paintballs stood right next to it. Needless to say, her curiosity was piqued. She check to make sure that no one was around, then check the equipment to make sure it was properly functioning, and shot a few paintballs to make sure. She might have broken window along the way. But unless she kept it hidden in her jacket, The safety switch on, and the nozzle for shooting pointed down, until the right moment.
Which was now.
Whirling back around, she flipped the safety switch off and started to fire.
Grunts of pain were heard as the monster team fell one by one, splatters of (coincidentally) orange paint blossomed on their arms, legs or stomachs from where they were hit.
"Whoa! Charlie?!" Cater looked at her in amazement.
But Charlie paid him no mind. Right now she was focused on her targets. And just like she said, true to her name, One paintball per person. She never missed a target. And they fell at her feet.
Once the last person was down, One of them suddenly jumped up and ran, screaming for his life.
"SHES A MONSTER! RUN AWAY!!!" The other students followed suit crying and begging for mercy.
Charlie turned back to Cater with a cute smile. "Problem solved! Let's move!"
—————————
The trio made it to the front gates of the college without a scratch on them.
Cater panted out, "...it seems like we've gotten rid of the monsters team on the way for now. And Charlie! You were an assassin out there! Let's take a pic to commemorate surviving after a pinch!"
This time Charlie was prepared and posed with a paintball gun up in the air, and a victory smile on her face.
"#NRC #HappyBeansDay #It'sSoTiring #CharlieisaBeast!"
Grim was down however. "In the end, we got separated from Jade."
"Bet he'll do something by himself. Our beans are starting to run out...." Cater notices the supply of beans left in their team. "Let's head to the Coliseum and aim for supply boxes on the way."
Charlie bods and they pick up speed again.
——————————
Azul scanned the Coliseum from the stands. "Based on the information from the scanner, it seems like players from both teams have quite decreased. There should be some from farmers team that's heading to the Coliseum to steal the harp soon."
Jack smiles, "I'm getting used to this capture Arm. I'll capture any of the trespassers."
The Sea merchant smirked. "I thought that that capture Arm would be the best equipment for a physically capable you, and It seems like my eyes weren't wrong. You have captured more than 50 farmers on our way from the school grounds to the Coliseum. You're a monster of a monster."
"Hmph. What a blabber mouth. You won't get anything even after praising me like that." Jack brushed off the praise while turning away in embarrassment.
Azul just laughed. "And now the physical strength bonus grades are ours!"
——————————
"Phew, we finally got some beans. Glad that there's some left in the supply boxes." Cater smiles as they stopped on Main Street.
"By the way, we haven't met any monster team for a while now." Grim points out.
"It's been a while since the game started. The number of players of the farmers team and monsters team are dwindling down." Charlie mentioned, adjusting her goggles.
"But it feels like now is the real fight, you know? The one survived = high level guys, don't you think?" Cater asked.
"Hmm! There's nothing to be scared about for us who have many beans."
"Please stop saying jinxes like that〜, Grim!"
Charlie heard rustling behind her. Im fact they all did. Grim and Cater froze. Charlie whipped out the paintball gun and was ready to fire in a moments notice.
"Oh, sorry. Did we jinxed you too fast?" Trey smiles as he and another vice lead were unveiled from the shadows.
"Hello, Monsieur Magicam, Monsieur Fluffball. Also, Milady de les etoiles." Rook smiles and bowed.
"Ugh! Trey and Rook ! Two vice dorm leaders....!?"
"Things just suddenly got interesting, and NOT in a good way..." Charlie winced, but didn't lose her hold on the paintball gun.
"Too bad, but it's the end of your destiny. Go and be defeated by us: me, who loves hunting and Trey Clover, The Rose's Knight."
Trey stopped him, "I've told you before but, can you stop calling me 'The Rose's Knight'?"
"Why? It's perfect for you, one from a rose."
"No, it's just that it's very embarrassing...Uh, Let's talk about this later."
"Qui. We have to capture the prey in front of us first." Suddenly the two started running.
"Here they come! Take cover, you two!"
As the thre ran for the lives, the two vice leads hot on their heels, Charlie tried firing the gun but due to not being in a still position, her aiming was off and she wasted paintball after paintball due to the rigorous running.
"Damnit! We need to find cover so I can take them out!" Charlie said.
Rook laughed behind them, "Monsieur Magicam. You run like an antelope! I have to get serious too."
"You won't last long if you're running while protecting Grim and Charlie." Trey three out.
"Don't shake me like that, Trey! You have such a bad personality!" Cater whined.
"We're done for!"
Suddenly, a bean was fired out of nowhere.
"What was that?!" Trey stopped abruptly.
"Trey, brace yourself and get behind the tree!" Rook calmly forced him. "We are targeted by a spy that is hiding his form!"
Then a storm of beans rained down.
Trey and Rook ducked for cover. "Ugh.....! From where are they targeting us?"
"They're in the direction of 2 o'clock. They're using a long-range Bean Shooter!"
Trey suddenly felt a sting on his cheek. "Ow! Oh. It seems like I got a bean thrown at me. You should run away, Rook."
"How could this be! The Rose's Knight〜〜〜〜〜〜!!!" He wailed dramatically.
"No, please, can you really stop that?" Trey tried to hide the fact that he wanted to hide somewhere where he wouldn't be embarrassed.
"I won't let your sacrifice.....be something meaningless. Adieu......" Rook slipped away.
"Phew! Now that was pretty dangerous!" Grim sighed in relief.
"But who saved us just now?" Charlie asked.
"Everyone, are you alright?"
"Jade!" Charlotte smiled as the second year walked up to them, weapon in hand.
"Like always: You saved us from a pinch twice! Let's take a pic to commemorate!"
"Sure. Let's do it."
"You too, Trey. You're a monster that Jade beat."
"Am I a fish on the fishing rod?...." Trey murmured as the pic was snapped.
"#NRC #HappyBeansDay #PotentialOfTheFarmersTeam #TooBadTrey!"
"Well, I'm eliminated so I'm going to go. There's no much time left, good luck on stealing the harp." Trey waved as he walked away.
"Jade, it's amazing that you always appear at a nice timing." Grim looked at him. "You're like a hero that appears at the last minute."
Jade smiles but digressed. "I'm not any hero. I was only checking Cater's MagicCam after all."
"Huh?"
"You have always uploaded a photo after something happened, so it's quite useful to know where your locations are."
"So that's how they knew where we were! You idiota!" Charlie scolded the ginger.
Cater's face flushed. "Oh shoot..... b-but, we we're saved because if that, weren't we?"
"Yes, you're right."
"By the way, Jade-kun. I see that you've gained a weapon."
Gateway
Now he has to come to terms with a significant loss of recent memory and his apparent death and rebirth, provided he can survive the rigors of the Tutorial on Gateway Station and whatever waits for him after the Tutorial. Updates. When I can... sorry. Author's Note. Gateway is a portal/isekai style GameLit novel, but it has two main lead characters and will eventually have a small cast of minor lead characters to support them. There will be small elements of base building / kingdom management added as well over time, but they will not be the focus. Gateway really is a slow burn that takes some time to get going unfortunately, but I hope you find it's worth the wait. Thank you! p.s. Book One is finally done (only needed one more chapter unfortunately...) but I'm off hiatus now and will be starting on Book Two right away!
Legacy: A wolf's tale
Follow Akascha as she goes from a beast of burden to a lovely (well more like a slightly belligerent) young woman! Note.This is a shory story (about 25.000 words) I wrote a while back in high school. Therefore, the range and depth of the story might be a bit lacking, but I wanted to share it with you anyway now that I discovered RR. Although I would love comments or constructive criticisme (as one can always learn), be aware that I have - at this point in time - no plans of rewriting this story. Thank you and I hope you enjoy! Oh and before I forget! The first chapter is rather short, but the rest of the chapters will make up for it.
