《Summer of 62》Chapter 9

I woke up to a knock on be front door.

I jumped awake and looked at the time. 10:00. My mom was at work.

"Oh shit." I said falling out of the bed. I quickly looked in the mirror. My pin had fallen out and my hair was super messy but I didn't really care. Being me I forgot about Phillips jacket.

I shot out of my room and stumbled to the door. I swung it open to see Benny and Smalls. They both looked me up and down.

"Whose is that?" Benny said at the same time Smalls said "Nancy?"

"Not important." I said quickly and crossing my arms.

"Hey. We were all worried when you didn't show up this morning." Benny said raising an eyebrow at me and the jacket.

"Oh. I just had an, interesting night." I said pausing for a second and looking down at the jacket.

"Are you gonna come out?" Smalls asked adjusting his hat.

"I don't think so. I don't feel very good." I said noticing that I actually didn't feel the best.

"Okay. See ya tomorrow." Smalls said starting to walk away.

"Can I talk to you for a second. In private?" Benny asked looking back at Smalls.

I nodded and stepped fully outside, closing the door behind me.

"I'll catch up Smalls!" Benny said. Smalls gave him a thumbs up and ran off down the street.

"What's going on with you?" Benny asked stepping closer so that I had to look up a little to look into his eyes.

"What do you mean?" I asked giving him an innocent smile. Benny knew me better though.

"You know damn well what I mean Nancy." He said making me step back and against the door.

"You've got what I'm guessing is Phillips jacket and want to skip out on ball today. What's happening with you?" He asked putting a hand on the door and leaning down so we were only inches apart.

"Nothing's wrong Benny." I said looking at everything but his eyes now.

"I know you're hiding something. Is it really that bad?" He asked watching me closely.

"Yes, it is that bad Benny." I snapped and looked back at him.

I sighed and spilled everything that happened the night before.

"I have to go to his baseball game at 3. After that I hope I never have to talk with him again." I said watching his eyes drain of some happiness.

"Why didn't you just tell me?" He asked clearly getting mad.

"I don't want to upset you." I said looking down, disappointed in myself.

"I just don't want him to hurt you." He said looking towards my lips.

"Um, I can take care of myself Benny, but thanks." I said, my voice getting high like it does when I get super nervous.

"I know you can. But it doesn't hurt to have back up." He said moving a piece of my snarly hair out of my face. Weird, my stomach freaked out and I started to feel really really weird.

"I better get inside." I said nervously reaching behind me for the door handle.

"Okay. Please just watch your back Nancy." He said before stepping away from me and walking towards Smalls down the street.

That's when things started to play out in my head. Did Benny like me? Did he know I liked him? I shook my head and cleared my mind.

I took a deep breath and slipped back into my house. I ran to my room and picked out a pair of jean shorts to about my mid thighs and a 3/4 sleeve shirt with a light blue sleeve and collar. I ran to the bathroom and showered quick before putting the clothes on.

It was about 12 by the time I was all done. I made myself some breakfast and sat in front of the tv like I'm not supposed to do.

I watched a couple episodes of some random tv show before figuring out it was 2:30.

I sighed and laced up my converse. I quickly grabbed my hat walked outside. I got my bike out of the garage and shoved Phillips jacket into the front basket.

I got to the field with about 10 minutes to spare.

Phillips was in the dugout and saw me right as I was walking over. I held the jacket in my hands, I was going to give it back after the game.

"Hey Nancy. Nice jacket." He said lacing his fingers through the fence. I gave him a small wave before sitting in he bleachers. I say in the far corner away from everyone else.

Across from me in the other corner was a bunch of the girls that Phillips was talking about before. The popular ones that could help me or whatever.

They were pointing and giggling at me.

I caught one of their eyes and flipped her off. She gasped and I heard a bunch of he boys in the dugout start laughing.

Finally the game started. It was sort of hard to watch. They weren't bad by any means, but my team was better. They were winning, but that didn't mean anything. Skill and teamwork was what really mattered.

At the very end of it I sighed and was finally glad it was over. I stood up and walked down the bleachers. I had almost gotten away before Philips caught sight of me.

"You weren't going to leave before saying goodbye, were you Nancy?" Phillips asked with a smirk. Two other teammates of his were with him.

"I kept my promise. Now I can leave, oh and here's your jacket." I said holding it out and glaring at him.

"I told you to keep it." He said pushing it back towards me. Fine. I rolled my eyes. I'll just shove it in his mailbox later or something.

"I'm surprised she didn't bring all of her team with her." Said one of his friends.

"They would waste their time on your poor excuse of a team." I snapped back making the kid that spoke look at me with wide eyes.

"What did you say girl?" He asked clenching his fists and getting ready to lunge.

"I said, my friends wouldn't waste their time on your stupid team." I said smirking myself.

"That's it! Let me at her!" The kid called jumping at me. I jumped back but Philips held the kid back.

"Cool it, Holmes. Another time." Phillips said smirking at me. I stuck my tongue out and started to walk away.

"I didn't say you could leave yet." Phillips said grabbing my wrist and spinning me to face him.

I scoffed and pulled my arm away.

"Since when are you the boss of me?" I asked narrowing my gaze on him.

He chuckled. "Calm down, those girls up there? They wanna hang out with you." He said pointing to the girls.

"How much did you pay them?" I asked looking up at them and making him laugh.

"Nothing, they just wanna hang out with you. How about it? Just for a couple of hours then you can go back to your lame friends if you like." Phillips said with a smirk.

I looked to the girls again and they all waved at me. I raised an eyebrow and turned my attention back to Phillips.

"Fine. But will you please leave me and the guys alone?" I asked sighing. Phillips smiled and put his hands on my shoulders.

"I guess so." He said, his grin turning slightly unsettling. I shook his arms off and started making my way over to the group of girls.

"The guys are gonna be sooo pissed." I whispered to myself on the way over.
