《Summer of 62》Chapter 8

I swung the door open and put on my best smile.
"Come in Mr and Mrs. Phillips!" I said motioning them inside.
"Thank you." They both said glancing at my shoes before making their way to the kitchen.
Phillips was about to walk in but I quickly pushed him back outside and closed the door behind me.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" He asked annoyed.
I turned back towards the door and stood on my tip toes to look inside. My mother was getting them seated.
"Look Phillips, if my mother asked we were at the carnival last night. I got sick, threw up, and like the gentleman you are you asked to walk me home but ended up not doing it because I didn't want to get you sick. Understood?" I asked turning to head back inside.
"Hey now wait a second what do I get?" He asked grabbing my wrist.
"You get to tell our parents you and I went on a date?" I said yanking my arm back with a hopeful smile.
"And, you get to come to my baseball game tomorrow." He said crossing his arms.
"No way!" I said putting my hands on my hips.
"Fine, I guess the carnival never happened then." He said reaching last me for the doorknob.
"Okay fine! What time?" I said sighing annoyed. The guys were going to hate me.
"3. Great. Oh, and you're lucky I was out at a friends till about 11 last night. This wouldn't work otherwise."He said with a smirk as I opened the door to see my mother.
"Oh there you two are!" She said sounding delighted.
I felt Phillips nudge me inside. I walked to my seat and he followed.
I took a seat and tired to have good manners. It had been a long time since I sat down for a nice dinner.

"So how was the carnival you two?" My mother asked taking a bite of her food.
Phillips and I exchanged a look.
"Oh that's where you were!" Phillips mother said smiling at me.
"It was good, up until Nancy didn't feel good." He said giving me a smile.
I tried to smile back but ended up looking down at my food instead.
"You walked her home right?" His father asked giving him a slight glare.
"Well not exactly. He offered, but I didn't want to get him sick. I knew he had a game coming up, and baseball's really important to him, so I couldn't let him get sick." I said smiling at his now beaming parents.
"Well it sound like you two had a great time!" My mother said.
The rest of the dinner it was mostly the adults that talked. Thy sometimes asked us questions like "are you ready for school" and "what's your favorite subject."
The parents were just talking now and I felt something touch my foot. It was Phillips. This was not the time to play footsie.
I jumped and accidentally hit the table when he did it and he had to hide a smirk. All the adults looked at me.
"I, uh, dropped my napkin." I said smiling and going under. I really had so that was the good part.
I climbed back and sat down again.
"Could we go for a walk?" Phillips asked our parents. I started to say no and everyone looked at me.
"Could we?" I asked holding my breath. I looked right into my mothers eyes. I was hoping she would see that I was trying to beg her.
"Of course." She said with a grin. I closed my eyes for a second before following Phillips lead.

Phillips stood up fast and I followed along. We walked o the front door and once I had it shut I stopped.
"What do you want now?" I asked him crossing my arms. I was getting mad at him for making me look like a fool, twice.
"A walk?" He said as if it was the dumbest question anyone could ask.
"Come on its fine." He said looking at my face expression.
I sighed and rolled my eyes. But I followed him anyways.
"Why are you such an ass?" I asked as we walked down the sidewalk.
He laughed like I was joking. I shook my head. "You've got such a big head." I said clenching my teeth, in annoyance, and to hide the chattering. I should have brought a coat.
I tried to hide it from him, but it didn't work.
He smirked and I shook my head trying to say no but he shrugged off his baseball jacket and handed it to me.
I shrugged it on as we walked. I had to hide a sigh in relief. It was a comfy jacket.
"Why do you hang out with those guys? You could hang out with girls that are popular and pretty and you could hang out with me." He said stopping at the end of the street.
"I don't want to hang out with you. My friends are real. Your friends are probably all fake." I spat at him stopping as well.
"You don't even know my friends." He said glaring at me.
"And you don't know mine." I said starting to walk back to my house.
I felt him following behind in silence. We just got to my door when it was flung open and his parents walked out. I felt Phillips quickly grab my hand and I tried my hardest not to yank away.
"Hey there sport! Nancy." Said his dad smiling at us. We were now side by side.
His dad looked at the jacket and I opened my mouth to explain but his dad winked at me.
"Ready to go?" Asked his mom smiling at us as well, especially the jacket.
"Yep." He said letting my hand go.
"See ya tomorrow Nanc." Phillips said smirking at me as he got into his car. I hated when he used that name. It sounded weird coming from him, and not Benny or the others.
"Wait! Your jacket!" I called back starting to take it off.
"Keep it." He called back with a smirk.
I rolled my eyes at him but thankfully only he saw. I crossed my arms and I felt my mother put her hands on my shoulders.
"You and William sure are cute." She said giggling a little bit. I sighed to myself quietly and shook her away after their car was gone.
"So have you guys kissed yet?" She asked following me into the house.
"Jesus mom!" I said shaking my head and making my way to my room.
"Sorry, I'm just glad you're hanging out with him." She said sighing and smiling at me.
"Yeah mom." I said rolling my eyes and shutting my door. I didn't even take off my shoes, or the jacket. I just laid in my bed and went to sleep. Instead of looking forward to tomorrow, I was dreading it.
