《Summer of 62》Chapter 6

We got to their diamond a couple minutes late, just to piss them off more.
"The rejects are here!" Called out one of the boys from their team. I let out an angry sigh and crossed my arms as the other boys met up with us at home plate.
"Well well, you guys actually showed up! We thought you guys chickened out." Phillips said smirking at the boys and then giving me a wink.
I resisted the urge to gag, instead I just rolled my eyes.
"Come on Philips we ain't got all day!" Porter said making me chuckle.
"Fine, we bat first, our field." Phillips said as we walked away.
"So, who has dibs at hitting Phillips straight in the face with the ball." I asked as we took to the field. Everyone raised their hand making me laugh.
From where I stood at 2nd base I could hear Porter making fun of and annoying whoever was batting.
"Shut up Porter!" Phillips yelled finally getting annoyed of him. I laughed along with some of the other guys.
"Just making friendly conversation!" He said throwing the ball back to Kenny. He said something else too, but I was too far away and couldn't hear.
When we were up to bat, I, as usual, went first. I 99.9% of the time made it on base. So that way the rest of the guys could hit it far and I could get as far as I could.
I got up to the plate and got in my position.
"Shouldn't you be playing with dolls or something?" Asked the catcher as I got into my stance.
"Shouldn't you be better at baseball than a girl?" I asked as I hit the ball straight to third, as usual.
I sprinted my ass off and made it to base with little time to spare.
"Yeah way to go Three!" I heard Squints call along with the rest of the guys cheering.
Porter was next. He hit it out far so that left had to run backwards and get it.

I made it to third making the guys cheer again.
Kenny was up next. He hit it out just past short. The right fielder had to run up and get it. I sprinted home and slid into the plate.
I smiled and ran back to the dugout.
We ended up winning that game.
We were all laughing and cheering on the way home. I was walking with Yeah Yeah towards the back when someone said my name from inside one of the stores.
"Hey I'll catch up." I said to Yeah Yeah. He gave me a thumbs up and I made my way into the store.
I had my hair down now. My hat was still on and I was still covered in dirt. I saw who it was and tried to walk back out but was too late.
"Looks like I'll be getting my date after all Nancy." Phillips said smirking at me while tossing a ball back and fourth from on hand to the other.
"In your dreams." I said turning to leave.
"Actually, it's tomorrow night. My family is having dinner with yours." He said with a grin.
"Oh joy." I said rolling my eyes, trying not to sound surprised.
"Make sure to save me a seat next to you!" He called with a laugh as I turned and walked out. I held up my favorite finger as the door shut behind me.
I ran as fast as I could to catch up with the guys. When I got there I was basically dying.
"Where did you go?" Asked Benny who was by me now.
"Oh, I saw something cool, just looking. Way too expensive though." I said not wanting him to know who I was talking to.
"Hey you wanna come to the fair with the rest of us tonight?" He asked smiling as some of the guys broke away from us.
"Course I do." I said grinning back.
We continued walking and he suddenly asked an odd question.

"You don't, like, Phillips do you?" He asked stopping in the middle of the road.
"No!" I said horrified he would even think that.
"Okay good. Um see ya!" He said nervously running off. I shrugged and walked inside.
"Mom is it okay if I go to the fair tonight?" I asked my mother as I came in.
"With who?" She asked peeking around the wall that divides the kitchen and the living room to look at me. She looked at my dirty clothes and that's when I got the idea.
"Phi- I mean William." I said smiling innocently. She smiled in relief.
"Great! I'm so glad you're friends now!" She said going back to cooking.
I went to my room, picked out clothes, then hopped in the shower.
When I got out I dried my hair as much as I could then got dressed. I was wearing my nicest pair of skinnier jeans, my red converse, a plain white shirt, and my black hoodie.
I ran out of my room and almost made it out the house when my mom stopped me.
"You're wearing that out to the fair?" She asked with a mortified look on her face.
"Don't worry mom! Will isn't dressing up either! We decided we wanted to be comfortable." I said giving her the best smile I could.
"Oh that's so sweet." She said sighing to herself. I nodded awkwardly and ran out the door, hair flying behind me.
I ran down the street and started walking when I got far enough away from my house.
"We've been waiting for you." Benny said as we all walked into the carnival together.
"Yeah yeah you took about ten hours." Yeah Yeah said clearly annoyed.
"You should be grateful Yeah Yeah, I had to lie to my mom to get here." I said making him stick his tongue out.
"Nancy, why did you have to lie to your mom?" Smalls asked causing Benny to fall into step and tune in as well.
"My mom doesn't exactly approve of the way I'm living my life. Sorry guys, but I had to tell her I was coming here with Phillips." I said hanging my head low.
"You what?!" Porter said stopping abruptly.
"Nothing Ham. You heard out of context." Benny said rolling his eyes.
"Look I'm sorry but she wouldn't have let me out if I said I was with you guys!" I said whispering now.
"It's fine, forget it and let's have fun." Benny said with a smile. "Hey guys I'm buying tonight!" Benny said causing us all to cheer.
We all took our tickets from Benny and got in line for a ride when Porter called out from behind us.
"Oh my God! I almost forgot!" He yelled causing all of us to trip over each other to see what the big deal was.
"Big Chief!" He said showing us a bag of chew. I crinkled my nose and the rest of the guys cheered.
"What is it?" Smalls asked.
"You're killing me Smalls!" Porter said rolling his eyes.
"It's chew Smalls." I said hitting him on the shoulder.
All the guys passed it around. I shook my head and passed it around to Smalls.
"Come on Three don't wimp on us." Yeah Yeah said holding it out again
"I just don't think it's a good idea, especially if we're riding rides." I said shaking my head again.
"You only live once Nanc." Benny grinned, nudging me with his elbow.
"Oh my God I can't believe I'm listening to you morons." I said taking a little bit causing the guys to laugh .
Let's just say it was a disgusting night. We all ended up getting sick and throwing up on the first ride we went on.
