I sat on his bed while he worked on his little project thing. He touched the lever and the ball went through the course.

Right when it was about to end his mother came through the door and the ball flew right at her and smacked her in the middle of the forehead.

I almost laughed but I stopped myself by biting the inside of my cheek. Scotty, on the other hand, seemed somewhat concerned.

"Oh, I'm sorry mom!"

"Y-yeah, sorry Mrs. Smalls"

"It was an accident"

She sat on the bed next to me and Scotty slowly walked over towards us.

"Scotty, have you made any new friends yet? Other than Y/N of course"

He didn't say anything for a while, basically giving her the answer, but he answered anyway.

"No…"

"Why not honey?"

"... Cause I'm still new"

"I don't want you sitting around here all summer, fiddling with this stuff like you did last summer and the one before. I know your smart and I'm proud of you, but I want you to get out into the fresh air and make some friends."

He looked down into his lap shortly and looked up again

"Run around, scrape your knees, get dirty! Climb trees, hop fences, get into trouble for crying out loud! Not too much, but some. You have my permission, now how many mothers do you know that would say something like that to their sons?"

He nervously smiled at her question

"None mothers, I guess"

"Honey, I want you to make some friends this summer, lots of them"

"Yeah, I know, but I'm not good at anything mom. Basically, I'm just an egghead"

"Oh Honey, you'll always be an egghead with an attitude like that"

She smiled at Scott and stood up while patting his leg. She said goodnight to me and him when she walked out.

He looked down again into his lap but smiling this time. I knew what his mother said made him confident but I just hope those guys weren't jerks to him again.
