《Stuck in Between (Reaper!Sans X Reader)》~Chapter 16~

You sat alone in the field of golden blooms, blinking in bewilderment as you looked down at your mental projection of yourself. "I'm here..." You said quietly, confused about what had just occurred.
"Hi Here, I'm Death." A lax tone lulled, a dark cloud of smoke appearing before you then vanishing. In its place stood Death, looking down at you with an easy smile resting on his face.
You pouted your lips and crossed your arms, eyeing the wisecrack as you stood. "Death? What happened out there? Why did I just collapse?" You asked.
His face fell slightly, but he shrugged before averting his gaze. "I guess seeing me while with Mettaton triggered his battle in your memory. Based on what I saw, he seemed to have squeezed you to death in the past..." He explained.
You tilted your head. "If I'm reliving his battle then why am I here rather than my nightmare? Shouldn't I have a front row seat to my torturous decay?"
In his gaze he seemed unamused as he continued to explain. "Well, since I was here this time, I was able to override the dream and bring you here instead, at least until your nightmare is over."
"What's that going to do?"
"You won't feel any pain until you wake up."
"Oh, I guess that would be useful huh?" You asked sarcastically, sitting back in the grass.
Your gaze felt dull as you wallowed in your numerous worries. You rolled on to your side and curled propped you head on your arm as you watched the grass.
"I was on live television. I can't make any more excuses now because Frisk saw me. He didn't want me to go." Your hand clutched tightly. "He's going to be scared..."
Your eyes squeezed shut as you tried to push away the thought. You couldn't feel the tears that slid over your face, over rather you had grown indifferent to your own suffering.
Cold swept over you and you shuddered as the soft grass gave way to hard, solid ground. Your eyes opened slowly and your breath stopped as your eyes set down on a demonic image.
The child smiled at you cryptically, their eyes the hue of obsidian. Their Auburn hair seemed unkempt and disheveled. Their flesh was like porcelain with fine scars littering their arms. A black dress covered their small frame just down to the knee. Their pale expression bore still delight as they laid facing you. Their mouth moved, but it was almost like a whisper.
The words she said reached you only after she slowly reached out towards you. You were paralyzed as her hand pressed over your soul and suddenly black shot across flesh, the outline of a shattering heart left on your chest. In your ear hissed the words, "Death lies. Death cheats."
Your eyes flew open again and you shot up from the grass around you. Your fingers knotted into the fabric of your white gown and you looked down at your chest. The outline wasn't there, but its image was still livid in your memory. The child was unnerving, almost unholy. Reflecting on it now they looked almost identical to Frisk, maybe a little older.

A shiver went down your spine and you looked around. Death sat next to you, his head on level with yours but his body flipped the opposite direction. His eyes remained clothes, so he didn't seem to notice your panic.
"Death?" You said quietly.
"(Y/N)!! Sans she's awake!" A small voice cried.
You blinked and the world was gone. The room around you was stark white except for the two figures hovering over you. Frisk was near tears and Sans just seemed conflicted.
"(Y/N)!" Frisk cried.
"H-Hey Frisk." You cooed gently. "What's wrong?"
He pouted aggressively as he gestured to you in your bed. "You just collapsed!" He yelled. "You were spitting up in front of everyone! What happened to you?!"
You couldn't help but feel guilty as you stroked Frisk's hair calmly. "I'm sorry Frisk. It was an accident. I didn't mean to give you a fright."
Your eyes locked with Sans a day you could see his concern. You shook your head solemnly as to say 'this won't stop me.' He sighed and rested a hand on Frisk's shoulder.
"Kid she's alright." He assured.
"Sans what is wrong with you?! She collapsed and you're acting like this is normal!" Frisk barked.
"Panicking isn't going to do her any good." Sans said bluntly.
"But aren't you even concerned?!"
"No I'm not. (Y/N) is a tough girl. I knew she'd be okay."
Frisk almost seemed more hurt than you did. "Sans you aren't acting like yourself. Usually you only act indifferent but right now you really seem like you don't care..."
You rested your hand on Frisk's head and shook your head. "Frisk trust me, Sans is a lot more concerned than he's letting us know. It's just he's trying to play it cool so I don't make fun of him."
"Kid you're the one in a hospital bed." Sans muttered lamely.
"But I'm not the one all worried." You faked, making a face.
Frisk seemed to soften lightly and he laughed quietly. "(Y/N) you're so lame."
"But I'm cool enough to be your sister right?"
He giggled and nodded, having seemingly relaxed. You held him on your lap and smiled. "We'll head out in the morning okay? I'll be fully recovered by then." You confirmed.
"But (Y/N) this keeps happening to you! Maybe it's because you're over extending yourself." Frisk suggested.
Believe me, that's far from what's really happening.
"Frisk we both know a night of rest and some food heals us humans right up. I've rested and now all I need is some food." You looked at Sans and tilted your head. "You got any food on ya Sans?"
"Just a hot cat." He joked.
"I'll go and get you some nice cream." Frisk said quickly. "You are not eating a hot dog right after you woke up. Besides! If he has any bicycles we can share!" He chirped.
You nodded with a happy grin. "That's sounds awesome."
Sans shrugged, tucking the hot cat in his coat. "You want me to come with you kid?" He asked.

"No! You stay here and watch (Y/N) just in case she gets worse." Frisk ordered.
"Aye Aye captain." Sans saluted.
With that Frisk darted from the room leaving you and Sans. Your grin fell and you sat up, yanking the tubes from your arm and covering the wounds.
Sans expression seemed to fall and he made sure the door was closed. "So, how is your soul holding up?" He asked.
"Not well. It's crumbling and fast. I need to get to Asgore before it shatters. We can't waste any more time." You informed. "Where's Hades?"
"He roosted outside the hospital. The attendants would allow him in."
You nodded and looked at the door. "Frisk is getting suspicious." You whispered quietly. "He's going to hate me after this..."
"No he won't. He just doesn't understand." Sans assured you.
You shook your head and rested your face in your palm. "I know I know it's just... I don't want him to suffer after I've died. Promise me you'll look after him until he's recovered."
"I already planned to." Sans smiled.
"I'm back guys!" A chipper voice boomed. Frisk swung into the room with arms full of nice cream.
"Um, Frisk isn't that a bit much?" You asked.
"Of course not! And we can save the extra for later. As long as it's in our inventory it won't melt." He said, dumping the treat on to the bed.
You snickered as you plucked a nice cream from the pile and unwrapped it carefully. On the wrapper, it read 'You are the most beautiful, caring and honest person there is!'
If only that were true.
But instead you smiled and ate with Frisk, savoring the sight of his smile as Sans cracked endless puns. You healed quickly, but even then you just sat and watched as Frisk was happy. It was impossible to tell if it'd be your last.
After an hour or so you stood and stretched. "Well guys, I'm not sure about you all but I'm pretty okay at the moment. I think it's about time we got going." You announced.
Frisk but nodded, collecting the nice cream into his inventory. "I actually had an idea about that." Sans chimed, looking at you and Frisk.
"What do you mean Sans?" Frisk asked.
"I was thinking, since (Y/N) and you need to save your strength, why don't I just glitch us to the judgement hall? We can camp there and confront Asgore in the morning." Sans suggested.
"You didn't think to suggest this a few days ago?" You snapped. "You could've saved us so much walking!"
Frisk giggled, punching you lightly. "You're so lazy (Y/N)."
"I'm not lazy! I'm energy conservative." I shot back, unable to hide my smile.
Sans laughed. "So what do ya say? Shall I teleport us then we wait?" He asked.
You looked to Frisk and he looked at you, shrugging. You returned to brief motion and looked at Sans. "Sure, why not?" You answered, trying not to sound anxious.
He nodded and began to walk towards you when you flinched away. "Hold it bone brain! I've gotta go get Hades first." You said.
"Heh, don't you mean bird brain?" He asked.
"No, that's too generous for you." You teased.
Sans faked a frown and you laughed as you stood from your bed. "You two make sure we have everything and I'll go find my bird."
"Okay boss. You coming kid?" Sans asked, looking at Frisk.
"Yep! See you in a bit (Y/N)." Frisk chirped.
You smiled and walked from the room, closing the door lightly. As you looked down the hall, the hospital seemed almost creepy. The long halls were empty except for a few carts holding supplies for rooms. No one stood in the halls except for you, making you shudder.
"I half expect to see the Shining twins pop up..." You muttered.
You jogged through the hall, keeping eye out for any monster. However you found yourself eerily alone.
"(Y/N)..." A faint voice hummed.
You froze in place, wanting to turning around. However, you weren't about to be the object of a horror movie so you instead kept your face forward and walked quickly.

Your eyes set on an elevator and you quickly boarded, pressing the button for the ground level. The doors closed promptly and you tapped your foot quickly as you waited for the elevator to move. However, after a minute it still stood still. Again, you pressed the button. Rather than the elevator shuddering into movement, you watched in horror as the door slowly opened.
Instinctively you closed your eyes and turned around. "I'm not doing this shit!" You snapped. "I'm not dealing with ghost shit today!"
"Turn around (Y/N)... I don't intend to harm you. I promise."
"That's exactly what a fucking ghost would say! I'm not a genius but I'm not that dumb!" You barked.
"(Y/N) I'm only here to warn you of Death..." They warned.
"Warn me of Death? Too late. He's a friend and we're chill. Now go away ghost."
The creature sighed before you felt a cold hand rest against your shoulder. "Death is lying to you. There is a way to salvage your soul, he's hiding it from you..."
You stiffened, turning slowly to face the creature. "What?"
But there was nothing behind you, only the long winding hall. The elevator door closed again and you were taken to the first floor. "What the hell..."
You stepped out of the elevator and the lobby was lively with activity. It was almost polar opposite to the floor you were on.
They were lying. Death has been sparing me for the past weeks just because I want to save the Underground. He has to be a good person.
However, it only took the smallest seed of deceit to create distrust.
