《✔️Ambrosia (Edward Cullen) BOOK ONE》14 - "Terrible Truth"

It had been four days. Four days since Ambrosia Hatton had seen or heard from Edward Cullen. Four days since she had kissed him in the car in the rain, the day that had been going so perfectly well for her. The other Cullens had missed a day, as the sun beat down but it was unsurprising to her, everybody knew that when the sun shone, the Cullens didn't show up. But that didn't explain Edwards mysterious disappearance. All she had received was a brief text message that he was going out of town for a few days. She'd gotten lifts to school from others, sat alone in the library once more and repeated every day as though she had never met the gorgeous Edward Cullen.

And Ambrosia couldn't help the pain that drooped in her chest whenever she thought about it, about what she could possibly have done so horribly wrong to screw everything up, to warrant him leaving without a single explanation. Ambrosia had only let a few tears slip down her cheeks because the love had been short. She wanted to openly sob, to shout but how could she do that now? When she didn't even know for sure that it was over. Perhaps, she was naive to consider herself of having a chance with the most handsome boy in the school, naive to think that there was still hope. But it was preferable to breaking her own heart, she'd hold on for as long as possible.

The next day, Ambrosia walked to school, it was long, over an hour but she didn't feel like squishing illegally into the four-seater car that belonged to Pheobe, she would rather have to leave stupidly early and hike her way there, feel the early morning wind and rain bite her sweet cheeks. But still, she refused to cry. She was angry now, angry that he could leave without warning, without a single explanation after kissing her. Her very first kiss had ended in disaster. Or so she thought.

Rounding the corner into the carpark, two minutes to the bell, she was instantly aware that the parking lot was practically empty and she would be late to her very first lesson. Trig, but she didn't care because he wasn't there to sit beside her, even if he didn't speak as she absentmindedly completed questions in her notepad.

She was halfway across the parking lot when she noticed the silver Volvo parked in its usual spot. But she tried her hardest to slow the fast pumping of her heart, it wasn't a sign of anything in particular. Trying to contain her own overwhelming hope, she nearly slammed straight into him.

"Edward" her voice was breathless as his eyes scanned her face, she looked upset, you didn't need Jaspers gift to see that, her hair was drenched from walking in the rain, voice rough from lack of speech. He was the only one she spoke to. From the green gaze she lay upon him, he was absolutely terrified about what he knew he had to do. He had to tell her, it would be worse the longer he left it. But for now, here she was in front of him, in all her breathless windswept glory.

Without really thinking through what he was doing, he stepped toward her, hands taking her cheeks as he pressed a second kiss onto her soft padded lips, her hands grabbing the shirt that clung to his body, exposed beneath his slightly open coat.

"Edward" she repeated when it sadly stopped, placing her forehead against his where he was slumped over slightly, and she made a brave decision, looking up into his golden eyes, she decided to be open with her feelings for once in her life. "What are we doing? We kiss and you leave and now you're back to do it again? I don't understand" her eyes watered as she rejected her instinct to be near him to step back from his reach.

"Ambrosia" his eyes closed for a second, seeing her eyes begin to fill with tears. "I need to tell you something... Something I should've told you a long time ago. I'm not the man that you think I am" he sighed, pained that he should have to do this, ruin her fairytale romance in this way, after all, it was going so well. "I've been lying to you and if you have any feelings for me at all, I need you to please come with me so I can explain. So that we can start this off... Properly."

"Where?" she wondered, Ambrosia couldn't help herself, here was Edward Cullen, the boy who she had fallen in love with over the past two months and even if it had all been a lie, she needed to know the truth. Even if it broke her.

"The woods?" he wondered and she followed his gaze, she hated the woods. She hadn't entered them since she was a child and those days she didn't remember. Her parents had died in those woods, how could she willingly enter them again. "I will look after you Ambrosia, I promise" he informed and she nodded, slowly taking his hand. Afterall, even if she was incredibly anxious and angry right now, the feel of his hand in hers calmed her as they walked through the trees and branches that built Forks forest.

When a sensible distance into the forest, he stopped and a few paces behind him, she did so too. She was terrified, watching him. What could he possibly say that was so serious? And why did it have to be in the place she hated the most?

"Ambrosia" he sighed "I need to tell you something but... I need you to promise that you won't ever tell anybody. It could be dangerous for us both if you did. Okay? Please, promise me that. You can hate me, do anything but please don't tell anybody. This isn't just my secret." he turned around to look at her, the pair of them standing four feet apart in a forest clearing.

"I promise" the words left her mouth before she had time to process them but she didn't regret her answer, Ambrosia was the quietest person Edward Cullen had ever met. If she couldn't keep his secret, who could?

"Have you noticed anything odd about my family?"

"Odd?" she wondered with a frown, perhaps she hadn't been as observant as she had once claimed herself to be. Her observance had dropped as her confidence grew.

"Ambrosia" he just wanted to say it but he knew that when the words were in the air, he couldn't take them back. "My family and I... We're not normal. We're not... Human" he told her and she stepped back, more from shock.

"What do you mean Edward? How could you be anything but human?"

"We don't eat Ambrosia, we don't sleep, we don't go outside in the sunshine. Our skin is cold and hard to touch... our eyes are of unnatural colour... And right now I can hear your heart pumping in your chest... You're scared. But you don't have to be because I would never do anything to hurt you, Ambrosia. All I've ever wanted was to protect you. For my first year in this town... I kept my distance, Ambrosia Emerald Hatton, the quiet girl, the sweet girl. Everybody only had sweet things to say about you and I stayed away because I never wanted to hurt you." He looked like he wanted to cry and she was frozen, unsure how to react.

"But then you bumped into me in that lesson and everything I had composed fell down around me, just from the sight of those green eyes, I knew that I had to know you. Ambrosia. Please, I need you to believe me. You're a great literature lover, surely this isn't too hard to comprehend."

"Is this a joke Edward? Toy with the shy girl's emotions and then feed her some extravagant lie for a laugh?" she wondered, she wanted to believe that he was better than that... For once, she wanted to believe the impossible was true. That he could be something more than human.

"Ambrosia, nothing I have said is a joke. You must believe me. I need you to believe me because... I'm falling in love with you Rosia, and I can't go on, loving you, knowing that I am lying to you every day. You deserve better than that. And if after that, you never want to see me again... I'll leave because I love you enough to sacrifice that... I love you enough to make you happy no matter what it does to me."

"What are you, Edward?" Her voice was a ghost whisper but he heard and it confirmed what he told her.

"I died in 1918, in Chicago. I was in the hospital, on the brink of death... I had Spanish influenza and Carlisle... He... he saved me. But to do that. He had to kill me. My mother, she died from it, she died begging Carlisle to do whatever he must to save me... And he did. I haven't aged a day since"

"What are you?" her voice was hollow, tears spilling because she already had her suspicions.

"I'm a vampire Ambrosia"

"Prove it" in a second he was gone and then he was back, carrying a boulder which he threw with incredible speed at a tree. Her tears fell faster, like a waterfall. She was frozen, unsure of what to do. "What do you eat?" she asked the vital questioned and he replied.

"My family and I, we choose to live differently to how you perceive, we don't hurt people. We only drink from animals, I would hate to sustain myself from another persons suffering" he closed his eyes. "Ambrosia, I understand that you may hate me now, I wouldn't blame you becauIe i hate myself"

"It's too late" her voice shook and he opened his eyes, seeing her fear. "It's too late for me to hate you now. I already love you Edward Cullen" she informed, her voice cracking and even though she cried and shook in fear, the pair of them knew that it would be okay. The thought filled them with unmistakable amounts of joy beneath their composed masks, they loved one another... And they would be okay.
