《The Whipping》Chapter 29

Two days.

Two days of sitting in the cell, longing the days away, and withstanding severe dehydration. I lifted my head up, rubbing my eyes, hoping for my fuzzy vision to clear somewhat.

"And she's awake," said Emily, chuckling to herself. "I told you, that wolfsbane really puts you out of it."

"I'm so thirsty," I mumbled, clutching at my dry scratchy throat.

Emily nodded. "Yeah, that happens. Joanna comes in with water every couple of days or so."

"How long have you been here?" I asked, scooting closer to the cell bars in order to see Emily a little clearer.

"Three years," she replied, huffing.

I furrowed my brows, shaking my head. I really didn't know how Emily was strong enough to withstand all of this, but she was supposed to be the Luna, and I could see why. Her mental strength was something I was envious of.

"What was Jordan like?" I asked, knowing that it may have been a touchy subject to ask about, but since both of our futures unforeseeable, I figured it couldn't hurt to find out a little more about Emily's mate, and Logan's brother.

Emily smiled, closing her eyes, resting the side of her head against the cold rusty bars. "He was that guy that everyone loved. Every kid looked up to him; they all couldn't wait for him to become Alpha. He was incredibly loving and caring, but he found it hard to let go, especially of Joanna. I didn't blame him, they had been together for years, but when he met me, it hurt him to see her so heartbroken. He just wanted what was best for her, but she vowed she would never give up on him."

I nodded my head, taking in everything Emily said, allowing her to vent. I had guessed she hadn't had someone to do that to in a very long time, and I was more than willing to listen. "But she never got what she wanted," I said, offering Emily a smile.

"No, she didn't, and neither did I," sighed Emily, sorrow plastered all over her face, masking her.

"I'm sorry," I whispered, a wave of guilt flowing through me.

"What's Logan like as a mate?" Emily asked, angling her body so she was properly facing me.

"We actually met at The Whipping," I said, unsure of how Emily was going to react.

Emily furrowed her brows, squinting her baby blue eyes. "What?"

I scratched my head awkwardly, tucking my now scraggly chestnut brown behind my ears. "It's a long story."

Emily shrugged. "We've got time."

I furrowed my dark brows, twiddling with my fingers nervously. "Do we? How do you know?"

"As long as Logan doesn't find out where you are, Joanna will keep you alive."

"Why?" I asked.

"She wants to wait until Logan discovers your location. That way, she can kill you right in front of him. She'll get more satisfaction out of it that way."

"Well, what's stopped him from finding us? We aren't exactly far away from my territory?" I said, feeling frustration course through my veins.

"Wolfsbane. It's Joanna's favourite thing to use. She scatters a little around the surrounding area, that way, it blocks the sense of smell, but there isn't enough of it to actually identify it as wolfsbane. So to anyone trying to track us, it would just appear as if there was no scent there to track. She uses it wherever we go."

"So, you haven't always been down here?" I asked, confused.

Emily shook her head. "No, we move every couple months or so. Joanna gets a lot of different people to help her."

"Why do they help her?"

"A lot of them owe her, so it's either do what she says or die," answered Emily, her expression blank as if what she was saying was an everyday occurrence, which to her, it was.

I sighed, shaking my head. My heart longed for Logan, but I was terrified of him finding me, because I knew I would be killed. I knew Logan would have to live with the pain of watching me die before his very eyes. I knew Joanna was ruthless, and I honestly didn't know how we were getting to get out of this one, but I held onto the last bit of remaining hope I had, knowing that it just may get me through this.

I closed my eyes, leaning my head against the bars. My body felt weak and heavy, and my muscles ached when I moved, meaning I was trying to stay as still as possible, but I just couldn't get comfortable on the cold stone floor.

"Okay, the time for socialising is over!"

I snapped my eyes open at the sound of Joanna's voice, my head thumping as the echo of her heeled boots hitting the tunnel floor as she walked rang through my ears. She appeared round the corner, dressed all in black, her dark hair pulled back into a tight sleek ponytail, and her eyes lined with smokey looking makeup.

"Since it's been two days and Logan still hasn't found you and I'm getting bored, I need you to tell me his weaknesses so when he does show up, I'll be more than ready," snapped Joanna, pulling up a metal chair, dragging it across the floor, and sitting down right in front of me, smiling.

"And why the hell would I do that?" I snarled, laughing in shock.

"I thought you might ask me that," said Joanna, smirking. "So, for every question you don't answer, she goes one more day without food."

I glared at Joanna's stretched out arm; her manicured finger pointing right at Emily's frail looking body.

I huffed, biting my lip, gazing into Emily's sunken in eyes.

Emily shook her head at me, urging me to keep my mouth shut, but I knew she wouldn't last much longer without food. Her body had been pushed to the edge, and it was just about ready to give up. If I was going to get out of here, I wanted Emily out too, and to do that, she needed to remain alive.

"Don't say anything," mumbled Emily, glaring at Joanna's back.

"It's not your decision, it's hers," said Joanna, her dark eyes focusing on my weak form, flashing a row of white teeth. "Now, Eliza, tell me; what is Logan's biggest weakness besides you?"

I remained silent, anger boiling up inside of me, getting ready to explode like a spewing volcano.

"That's one more day," announced Joanna, holding up one finger.

Just as I was about to release all of the built up rage inside of me out on Joanna, an awkward cough caused all three of us to turn our heads towards a man standing at the entrance of the tunnel, his eyes fixated on Joanna.

"Rosalina is here to see you," he said, causing Joanna to scoff.

"I thought I told that kid to never come back here," she said, shaking her head. "Kill her."

"Um, she says it's important. It's something about Alpha Logan."

At the mention of Logan, Joanna chews on her lip, taking a few seconds to think. "Okay, send her down, but search her beforehand, make sure she has no weapons or wires; nothing."

The man nodded, exiting the room, causing Joanna to smile down at me, clapping her hands together. "Well, this could be exciting."

I glared at her excited form, disgusted by how easily she it was for her to wish harm upon someone else who, in reality, did no wrong.

I was nervous to see Rosalina, I didn't know if she would speak to me. I didn't even know what to say to her, a part of me understood why she did what she did, but another part was furious at her for her part in this. However, I knew if someone was holding my mother captive, I would do anything to save her too, even if it meant hurting someone else.

I swallowed nervously at the sound of feet hitting the tunnel floor, and I felt sweat build up on my dirty forehead, slowly trickling down and dribbling onto my neck. My eyes widened as Rosalina's small frame appeared from out of the tunnel, her curly brown hair pulled back into a long braid. She walked straight up to Joanna, not even sparing a glance at me, even though I knew she knew I was looking right at her.

"What the hell are you doing back here Rosalina? Didn't I tell you to leave?" growled Joanna, rolling her eyes. "Kids never learn."

"Alpha Logan knows the whereabouts of Eliza," said Rosalina, her voice completely emotionless as she stared at Joanna, her eyebrows raised.

Joanna squinted, slowly standing up from the metal chair she was seated on. "And how do you know this information?"

"He told me himself. He trusts me. He's planning an attack."

Joanna laughed, folding her arms in front of her small chest. "Tell me Rosalina, why are you telling me this, huh? You got what you wanted, your mother is free. Why would you still be trying to help me?"

"Once I leave, Logan will eventually put the pieces together. He'll figure out I had a part to play in this, and he'll come after my mother and I. He won't stop until he finds us. I want to make sure Alpha Logan dies."

My eyes widened and I covered my mouth with my hand, holding back tears.

Joanna shook her head, glaring into Rosalina's bored looking orbs. "Now, why should I trust you?"

"I'm willing to report back to you on Logan's plan. That way, you'll have the upper hand. My mother means everything to me. I only just got her back, and I'm not losing her again, not for anyone," mumbled Rosalina as she glanced at me, quickly taking in my shaking form.

"Rosalina, I don't want Logan dead. I want him to watch me kill his mate right in front of him, and then have him suffer for the rest of his life, knowing there was nothing he could do to save her, and she's never coming back to him," spoke Joanna, staring off into the distance as anger pooled in her dark eyes.

Rosalina shook her head. "You're going to have to kill him, Joanna. He won't stop, once you kill Eliza, he will never stop hunting you."

"I can live with that," shrugged Joanna.

"No, if I'm going to continue to be a spy for you, I want Alpha Logan dead at the end of this. Without my inside information, you won't know what's coming, and trust me, he's got a lot of people, you're going to need me, or you will just end up dead," ordered Rosalina, puffing out her chest and raising her chin, glaring into Joanna's eyes.

Joanna chewed on her bottom lip before offering a simple nod. "Fine. As long as I get the satisfaction of watching Logan break down in front of me, I'll be happy."

Rosalina nodded, crossing her arms over her chest, her face still expressionless.

"Well, I'm going to get a drink. Do whatever you want, but I will be keeping my eye on you, just know that," said Joanna as she studied Rosalina before sauntering out of the room and down the tunnel, the tapping of her heels eventually dissipating.

I wiped my tears away and I grabbed the cell bars, lugging myself up off the floor, ignoring the dull ache in my quadriceps. "What the hell are you doing Rosalina?" I whispered, shaking my head, disappointed in the young girl standing in front of me.

"Getting you out of here."
